Seeing Mark E Smith in that wheelchair, vocals barely dechipherable, in a withering state and against that juggernaut of sound is one of the most powerful live performance images I've seen. It's a bit hard to watch, but damn heroic at the same time.
You my friend are the type of person that would buy an abstract piece of art for a few million and make sure your friends seen the receipt. It’s nonsense, the man hasn’t ever had any type of class or genius - it’s people like you who seen art in a toilet smeared with shite & hails it as a Rembrandt.
I've been lost, no new fall record every year, no gigs no point, well at least we have an extensive back catalogue and the memories, thank you Mark, miss you every day
Mark E Smith: A Testament to the Power and Terrors of Alcohol. Even through so many years of hard drinking he kept it together, in his inimitable style. But Jesus he looks ready for the grave here. A true rock n roller, taken to the extreme. Most of them died while they were still handsome or pretty It was good for us he lived so long. I hope it was as good for him. RIP, Mark, legend forever.
I hadn't seen this. I heard them first in '89. I am now 48. My God, I knew he had it in him, but I didn't know he really did it THIS WAY. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
Moments like this, MES performing in a wheelchair, bloated and filled with cancer or seemingly odd moments like singing from backstage, carrying on the set after urinating himself (in hindsight, maybe meds and their side effects?) this is the epitome of hardcore. "Hey there fuckface, hey there fuck face...We are the Fall!" Indeed he was The Fall, even when your granny on bongos could not make it to the concert, MES did. Nothing ever stopped MES, except death. And even then, we are blessed with his legacy.
I was there - the 3rd to last gig I think. It was a very difficult gig, Mark only did about 20 minutes on stage and then sang the rest from backstage on the radio mike.
I will just chip in as a sh__Y ... soft-on fan, because my extent was Live At The Witch Trials for most of my life. But every time I get a snip of other things that you fans love, I love it. I saw this band the other day doing Wolf Kidult and just swooned about the tune - these guys were tight AF. They're tight again here - and I love the tunes, as new. Mark E is the last person whose physicals depress or sadden. He's always been a twisted wretch - and here, as ever - the wretch is a punctuator. I f-ing love it. Caterwauling punch-studs.
Tragic. This is what decades of alcohol abuse does to a body and mind. If you think Mark E. and Shane were/ are cool, then pay close attention. I can guarantee you from experience their loved ones suffered from their drinking.
On the other side, their creativity was influenced by so called abuse. I can only suppose their lives were much more amazing than most peoples. Let people do as they please. Tragic comment, Peter.
@@caramackid2363 I would only say as an unknown musician and poet who quit drinking three years ago, booze does not make you creative. All the greats--Faulkner, Hemingway, Lennon (before he got hooked on smack), etc.--did their best writing while sober, no matter how alcoholic they were otherwise. It's romantic to think otherwise, not in the good way but the naive way.
@@peterjonas4971 Not all people are the same as you. Folks operate to their pleasure or displeasure. I guess there's countless poems about your tragic lifestyle
@@caramackid2363 Do you not think that Mark E and Shane were alcoholics? Do you personally know any alcoholics? Both of them were full of genius, fire, anger, love all the way up to about 1990. Neither of them ever made better music after that. It's a progressive illness.
I was so disappointed when I learned that their residency at Brooklyn's venue Baby's All Right was canceled. I did hear Mark was not doing so well, but I did not know he was already in a wheelchair. He died a few months later.
Fuck I love Mark E Smith and all Fall group mixes so brilliant xxx bloody well done doing gigs when you were not well 🙏🙏🙏 miss you mate Xx RIP you were entitled sir xxx

Please give this man credit for NEVER giving up!
Rock n Rock under Capt Smith never repents, never lightens, never quits.
Some snowflake performers cancel gigs because of a mere cold. Mark E Smith is literally wheeled onto the stage and the show goes on.
What is life for but to be creative.
@@shack7631 to be fair I think a cold affects some types of vocal performance more than others lol
@@NickSBailey Captain Beefheart would purposely give himself a cold to get his blues voice apparently

You're so right - tough to see the Captain in that state but what a force of nature to carry on anyway.
Still a breathtaking performance in my opinion I’d definitely see this

The most incredible man right to the end ❤
Relentless til the end. We’ll never see his like again. Ultimate respect. The Commander-in-Chief, Mark E Smith.
This should have been the UK’s Eurovision Song Contest entry, not just in 2004 but in every year since then.
MES was booked to appear
So he appeared.
This is one of the many reasons why we love him
Found it heartbreaking to watch. But comforting to think he probably didn't give a fuck.
RIP to the legend
The most Fall thing of all time 'Here it is. Like it or fuck off'.
Mad respect for him still going strong despite his health trying to keep him down. TRUE INNER STRENGTH.
very sad to see Mark in this conditions, rest in peace legend...
Mark was a stubborn, wonderful maverick… right till has last few days.
He *is* appreciated 👊🏻💥
I was at his second last ever performance in Newcastle..ever so glad I went ..no more mark no more fall ..still can't get my head around the fact..

Don’t forget his love of speed and cigarettes. That contributed to his condition here as well.
The utmost respect to Mark . That's what you call a true fighter
Mark you are the best! The Fall! I've loved you since the 1979.❤
in many ways it’s hard to watch. in many ways it’s fucking magnificent. rest easy, MES.
Perfect, Thank you
'Always the same, always different '
❤
Sad to see him like this , but such a courageous man and as he said he don’t bothered ! RIP man ..
I hadn't seen this. I heard them first in '89. I am now 48. My God, I knew he had it in him, but I didn't know he really did it THIS WAY. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
He couldn't twiddle any knobs from that chair. I bet the band were over the fucking moon.
🤣🤣
ha ha i was thinking that too
That's a fucking warrior up there.
My goodnesss. As real as real ever was, this man. True to his principles to the bitter end. What a fighter too. Huge respect. Great band too.
Now that's what I call raging against the dying of the light.
He is ENDLESSLY appreciated. Thanks, soldier Mark, for the pretty good music, the clever lyrics and the helpfull wisdom you gave to us all...
thanks for the lifetime of great music. RIP.
Freaking unparalleled genius to the very end!
Stunning performance.
MES wanted to honour his commitments, he probably shouldnt have, I imagine he was in alot of pain. But he did it for us.
saw him once perform seated, around 2008, because he had a broken knee. should have made that prick live forever.
Today what would of been his 64th birthday today. Makes me sad to see him in a wheelchair and feeling unwell... rest in peace Mark. E Smith
Amazing, The Fall sound really magnificent on this clip. Even in his poor health, MES give it 100%
Absolutely, you just know that he get up out of that chair if he could
you are appreciated

It’s sad to see him in this state. He kept going until almost the very end. The band is great. RIP Mark.
Almost unrecognisable with the bloating . Some severe heart or respiratory failure must have got him in the end. RIP
But he was still good! Fucking hell, I love this man.
At the risk of sounding heretical here, but while Mark was a remarkable trooper, he would have been better off not performing at this point.
You would have fun telling him that.
written12 In your opinion. He might have felt it was the only thing he wanted to do in his final months.
Rocking and kicking ass till the very end...

I still feel
today for 'the fall' the same impact I felt in the 80's. Mark E Smith is
tireless and active ... only death will stop him!
Yup.
Indeed ( sadly )
May he rest in peace
With love from Canada, sorry for the lost.

Right, mate!
Totally agree..100%

Thank full to see Mark E Smith with The Fall in the year 99 in Gronningen in the great VERA CLUB.
