      smidget whittington It's way easier to 'guess' that stuff in the age of social media. Remember, DB already knows what he looks like and where he works; it wouldn't be too hard to find the guy online someplace. He's a security guard, he probably spends all day tweeting about how he hates his job and wishes he was off playing golf instead. Although, just why someone with one tedious job would spend his days dreaming of leaving it all behind to pursue another even more tedious profession is beyond even Derren's abilities.

    The reason Derren Brown is so amazing is because he makes you, as an audience, think that he's letting you in on big secrets as to how he does these things, he lets you know how he gets these gullible people in the streets. The greatest trick he's playing is that he's also tricking you.
    In tricks of the mind, he says that NLP, hypnosis, all that stuff is bunk. He has no high regard for it at all. He's an illusionist, through and through.

    I find the denim salesgirl one particularly interesting, for the way in which Derren starts by talking in the present term with "It's fashion. It's an assistant in a shop." then subtly changes it to "You selling denim? You selling jeans?" with a seemingly deliberate ambiguity in the way in which it can also be heard as "You were..." or "You are..." Maybe he isn't using these vocal and language techniques at all, maybe I'm entirely barking up the wrong tree. But it's interesting to study and pay close attention to, because it seems to me like he may be using an element of cold reading, subtly getting feedback from his words and adapting them on-the-fly to turn wrongs into rights.

      +maximthefox Lots of people can get these skills. He is profiling people the same way border security blokes do then cold reading (guessing). Cold reading is only useful as a party trick.
      "Surely catching rapists and murderers is a much better use of these skills that he claims to have, than making entertaining TV shows?"
      Just because you have one skill doesn't mean you are obligated to take a profession that uses it. Why don't all chef's work in soup kitchens? Why do some doctors become plastic surgeons instead of working with the red cross or doctors without borders?.
      Even then cold reading is useless in any real application. It realies on the participant to ignore a billion wrong gueses only to be impresed by correct ones.

I don’t personally have a clue if Derren Brown has any real psychological training or how much of these shows might be rigged or bullshit, but if he has any kind of clue I’m sure he’d be able to spot psychopathic traits, whether or not that means that somebodies killed someone is different and would probably require a detective.

      @SpikeWolfwood Před 10 lety +15

      It is certainly is impressive, but I wouldn't put him at Sherlock level. Brown is great at what he does but he's a mentalist and if a magician is telling how he's doing something then he's probably either telling half truths or flat out lying. I'd be willing to bet that his talks with these people were quite a bit longer than what's being shown and in that time he was able to pick up clues and pull information through cold reading. Also notice that he never actually interviews the people he's talking about (like the "journalist") as he's explaining his his method. The viewer simply takes his word for it because he started off with a couple of successful reads and that's gotten us thinking in a pattern of him being right. Another way to increase his odds of success (though I'm not saying that he did this) would be to hang out in a business district and pay attention to what buildings people come out of as they go to lunch. If you know the kind of bushiness occupy the building they just came out of then you've got a head start. Clothing would help narrow it down a bit more based on if a more or professional or casual look and whether or not it looks expensive. Demeanor could help narrow it down further between a position of more or less power in their work role. Pretty soon you've narrowed it down to a hand full of things it could possibly be based on the location and you can take an educated guess from there. It helps if you're vague enough and just name the field and let them fill in the title. Most of the time they'll actually incorrectly remember it anyway when they tell their friends later and give you credit for being way more accurate than you were. The mind loves to embellish on what we remember. Don't get me wrong, cold reading is something that takes skill and a lot of time to get good at. I greatly admire this kind of mentalism (as long as it's not being passed off as supernatural) but I don't think that Scotland Yard will be requesting his services any time soon.

    • @JaconSamsta
      @JaconSamsta Před 10 lety +4

      SpikeWolfwood It's fiction vs reality, you can always put fiction to a super high standard unobtainable by real people.
      What he is doing is very impressive (the things he does besides cold reading are as well) and I wouldn't be surprised if secret services used people of his skill level, as this, combined with the skills of a true detective, is exactly what they are looking for.
      He's a showman, a very good one (maybe the best cold reader out there) and you should always take showpeoples skill with not a grain, but a bag of salt.
      As for the last guy, derren has already shown us how easy it is to make people want something that they didn't ever consider (that bmx video).

      SpikeWolfwood I agree with everything you said; I think the great thing about this guy is his communication and influence. To some portion of the population, he is a wizard by chance. It is exercised very well; I would like to see how often it works as intended, and how progressive right answers enhance the agreeability of participants.

    • @SpikeWolfwood
      @SpikeWolfwood Před 10 lety +3

      I also think his influence is a positive thing. As impressive as anything he dose can be I appreciate that he reminds people that it's all accomplished through tricks, observations and misdirection. There have been a lot of unscrupulous people who have used the same techniques to pose as "genuine" psychics in order to take advantage of the grieving, vulnerable and unaware. Not only is he a good showman with ample charisma, but the fact that he admits that nothing he does is achieved through supernatural powers is great for educating people against being fooled by those who may want to take advantage of them. Not just good entrainment, but a good introduction into concepts like cold reading, cons, scams and psychological phenomena such as the the Forer effect. That last one may be of particular interest to anyone who is partial to things like astrological horoscopes. I believe Derren Brown even did a bit about it a while back.

    The truth is far simpler than what they make you believe. Take this on board for a second and try it out yourself for the same effect. It's 5.30pm, Derren's been walking the streets since 4pm, observing these people inside their place of work, he waits until 5.30 - 6.00pm until they leave their job on foot and gets into position, he then boldly strolls up to them and 'pretends' to mind read them telling them where they work...BOOM! And as for the other revelations that come out , try getting one of the production team inside the place of work over hearing their everyday chatter who then can simply cherry pick an event and report it back to Derren. At the time I watched this I was dumbfounded on how it was done, 10 years later and a wiser brain you start to unlock things. The real magic of all Derren Brown's work is making us believe he has a super mind, NLP psychological wizard, who practiced locked away in a room for years - no, just effective thinking is what it comes down to.

      What he does is real, it doesn't mean to say there is no simple method to it. I have also been to every stage show he has done to date, I know that this is they way THIS is done. He doesn't have magical powers you know, he is human and will find any way to fool the likes of you an me. There are some people out there who think he is on another realm, and thats exactly what he wants you to think. Trust me, the truth is far simpler.

Do you really believe that your posture depends on your job and every single job in the world has a certain posture to it and all other factors influencing you and your posture do not matter?
      Really, people that want to believe dont question things, its the same for religion. Just believing it doesnt make it any true.

    • @NetAndyCz
      @NetAndyCz Před 6 lety

      Of course you can read a people a lot by their posture and clothing, but mentalism usually is not "psychology on steroids" it is tricking people in one way or another and keeping them just on thee edge of believing it might be true (unlike normal magic where people these days tend to know that it is all about sleight of hands and gimmicks and it is always an illusion and not real power of magician). Mentalists usually get information about their subjects well in advance or use stooges for some tricks, or use normal magic but pretend that it is all psychology but it is same smoke and mirrors and other branches of magic.

As a random person from the audience was volunteering for something he said "Are you a therapist or a counsellor of some sort?" and she said "No, I'm a teacher", so he was fairly close (a lot of teachers and therapists have a similar "look" about them), but he quickly changed the subject. Obviously the "misses" were edited out of this clip, but it's pretty amazing how most people reveal a lot about themselves by the way they dress or carry themselves. Everyone's trying to send out a message.
