  • Sophia Malthus was 19 years old when she fell off a racehorse, breaking her neck and becoming paralysed from the collarbones down. Now at 27, Sophia has experienced a spectrum of physical challenges and emotional responses from life with a spinal cord injury. Rachel Smalley talks to Sophia for WOMAN about studying law, incentivising young people to maximise opportunities, and deconstructing the stigma around disability.

Some of the things Sophia said really made me think of things differently. Smart, beautiful and insightful - quite a person.

Such a great insight, and love her gentle, self-deprecating sense of humour.

Soph, you inspire me with your mental strength. I've followed you and Indi for a while. I'm 40 and I've got schizophrenia. I make good healthy choices. Geez I'm just watching the part of the interview where you talk about the compliment "you're inspring" translating to "your life isn't worth living" oh dear. I hope you understand my real gratitude- you've inspired me to do my makeup and hair so I can be my prettiest!! So there.

I just found this interview Sophia. As usual, you did a terrific job. I have been a quad for a long time, worked full time, own my own house, and travelled widely, yet still occasional find myself the object of “inspiration porn.” I always try to tell people those os us in chairs are no different, that we simply live our lives on wheels, but with the same interests, dreams, and aspirations. You and I have communicated a bit on social media sites, and it is always good to see you. Hi to Indie too! 💕

What a legend ! I admired Sophie for choosing the career she had initially, ie apprentice jockey, it is a dangerous thing to do and many jockeys do suffer serious injury or death. It is plain to see the crushing effect it has had on her. I have always been aware of the bravery she shows in everyday life and, like everyone I suppose, would help in any way she asked. I'm a retired lawyer and think her intelligence and determination will be welcome in the professional ranks if she decides to join them.

Rachel Smalley couldn't have asked more liberal commy questions. Able bodied people inspire us, all the time, by overcoming obstacles in their lives. Disabled who overcome their seemingly impossible obstacles definitely inspire us as well, which is why I was watching her videos in the first place. Sophia you are a huge inspiration to many. Most outstanding people don't think that they are, but you are. P.S. many of the following comments prove this point.

Sophia, today I got a catheter. I need it for 2 weeks. It was scary. I'd seen it before because you and Indy "normalised" your catheter. It was less scary because of you.

I don’t really remember, I think “I thought it should be more” at the time. -It’s a tragedy what happened and worsted is the low view that’s all.
