  • A spinal injury at 17 didn't stop Claire Freeman achieving her dreams of completing a design degree, Masters and now PhD in the powerchair. Despite ticking things off her bucket-list, she was severely depressed. In a bizarre twist of fate, it was a mishap in a routine operation, which forced her to pause and address her issues… nearly two-decades after her car accident.

I am 16 , 6 months back I had a paralysis attack ( quadriplegia) both hands and legs. Later doctors came to know by MRI that I was having incomplete spinal cord injury because infection in my spine. I was not able to move at all. I thought everything is finished but with the help of physiotherapy and having a supportive physiotherapist for 6 months now I can walk with the help of stick and I am trying to walk without any support and indepently.

I feel I may be uniquely qualified to relate heavily to the mother. There is absolutely no way to predict the future and crazy things happen. She can't blame herself. Easier said than done. 33 years ago my father owned his own auto shop and salvage yard. He used a trojan loader's bucket to lift the back of a car off the ground so he could cut the rear axle out in preparation to be put in a crusher and crushed. One morning he had me with him like normal and I was riding along with him and he had me stay up in the seat because he didnt want me running around with the car not being safe for a toddler to run around and I remember some things but I guess I started to play like I was impersonating my father as a heavy equipment operator and the hydraulic lever could only be operated one way while the engines are off and as you could guess I played with the wrong lever and dropped the bucket as my father was under the car. My father says he remembers the bucket coming down and jumped under it to try and protect himself and 2000 plus pounds of solid steel layed on him and he heard a loud pop and was instantly paralyzed. I for some reason remember getting out and running to the house yelling my daddy is dead over and over and my mother running down and called emergency services. Although I was far too young to be left in such a dangerous piece of equipment alone Ive always had moments of feeling responsible. Cant help but think my childhood was different from other kids watching kids running around with their father and not doing some things because of a stupid pull of a lever I did as a 2 yr old. I hope she doesnt beat herself up just because something can be prevented doesnt mean we as humans always notice and things happen. We are human after all.

Hi, I'm 74 years old and have been a para for 48 years. You "youngsters" I see on the Net are still inspirational as I think some of the reasons life is different for wheelchair users now is because myself and many others paved the way...In the US anyway. Raised two daughters from infancy as a single parent which gave me the early drive to keep going. I think the hardest part was learning how to live with myself because unless I could do that I couldn't live with others. It certainly wasn't easy and even after 48 years I still have to bite my tongue sometimes and say to myself it just isn't worth it..."Move on". So it's been a series of "moving ons" but with aging it's a very slow move now. Still independent and my daughters grew up to be caring successful people with their own families, and life goes on, albeit slowly now. The world is all yours now, make it even better.

It was really hard for me to listen to Claire's story of thinking of assisted suicide, because my brother, an alcoholic, died by his own hand. Then I fell and herniated a disc in my lower back a few years ago and with it came incredible pain, but I think it is harder for my birth family to accept the hardware I now live with as I see a "tool," not the stigma, so I'm beginning to think that's the difference between my brother and I. We were both disabled in our own way, but I think he had lost hope that things could ever change for the better. I'm grateful that Claire didn't end her life and that she's now feeling confident enough to share her story. And I'm also glad to hear that she is thinking of designing better tools for us to use! I am a Mother of a young girl who was in a ski accident, a year ago March 11 2017 and she is a now T11 para. Your stories almost match, she was 18 and starting to receive all of her college acceptance letters when the accident happened. Our family has been struggling to gain footing and search for knowledge to help her as best as we can. She did end up going to University and loves to prove naysayers wrong, just like you. I am so happy you are trying to change how people see the rolling world. Thank you, from Seattle wa.

Hello Claire, I am watching your "story" and am just absolutely in love with you and your attitude. I needed to watch this story
because number 1 it's a wonderful story and 2 I had back surgery 4 years ago that went wrong, I am able to walk a bit but when I do the pain is excruciating and I try to manage pain with turmeric and advil because I became so dependent on Opioids that I couldn't think anymore. I have become so depressed that I seem to sit and watch movies and CZcams. After watching your story I joined a gym close to my apartment and am working out with a goal of walking without a cane or crutches. I want to "Thank You" for the inspiration and the realization that I have a chance to walk and I know you wouldn't just sit around if you had a chance to walk! THANK YOU so much for the inspiration. I'm also a designer, landscape architect.

I suffered a T9 SCI 25 years ago. Your story is so very similar to mine especially when you talk about the mental aspect of the injury. I had such a hard time explaining my feelings because people do not understand your state of mind with an SCI injury. You perfectly described it and it mirrors exactly my own feelings. I went through a really hard divorce because of it. People just want you to move on and forge ahead but if you do not deal with what happened to you it all comes crashing down at some point. For me it was 18 years post injury.

I had a fracture of my sacrum and many other bones in a skydiving accident. I have learned that humans are incredibly tough and resilient, not physically but mostly mentally. We adapt our expectations and learn to adopt new goals md cherish our progress towards those goals. At the beginning it seems impossibly depressing but the mind is wonderfully da-table. Your story Claire is so particularly inspiring. You are a brilliant example of this resilience.

I busted C5-6 about 5-6 years before you. Seeing your hands was like looking in a mirror at myself. I have the same videos that you do only with myself in the chair. I ignored the injury and pressed on. I was able to walk again and have never used a wheelchair. I saw all the faces of my friends in rehab as they watched 3 P.T.'s stand me up behind a walker with platforms for my arms because I couldn't grab the walker. I can still remember it today like it was all in slow motion. I could see on all their faces how they wished they were the ones that had that tiny chance to be where I was at that time. I remember thinking how I wanted to be any place other than behind that walker. I was about find out how much my world was going to come crashing in and I wasn't even 21 years old yet. After a half hour I moved about 3 meters. But in that time nothing in that gym moved. Everybody was fixated on me. After therapy that night when all the patients and families gathered on the porch, the mood was very somber. It was like we all knew that there was going to be 1 lucky winner of the "Walk Again Lotto" and everybody found out that they were not the winners. There was no joy for me because all my friends for the past 6 months just found out that they weren't going to walk again.
I fall constantly. Broken a few bones over the years. Today I'm starting to see the abuse my body has taken over the years. I look at you and wish I could pass this winning lotto card to you. If only I could.

I had just turned 24 when I was paralyzed and am now 61. I was November 1980. My son grew up only knowing me in a chair as is his son is now learning about his 2nd Granma. His other is a walker, so he knows both worlds and doesn't carre.
