I do find it stupid from Vince’s perspective that he feels he got a bad deal with the contract he gave Bret, yet this is the period Bret did his best business, he made Steve Austin a star and was a great heel. He also inadvertently made Vince the greatest heel of all time. So Bret pretty much made both the top babyface and heel of the attitude era.

@@Zack_410 Some facts of the Montreal Screwjob for the braindead morons who still side with Vince McMahon..
      1. The Survivor Series wasn’t the last day on Bret Hart’s WWF contract. His contract expired on November 30, 1997, 3 weeks after the Survivor Series.
      2. Bret Hart’s creative control clause clearly and unequivocally stated “all match finishes in the last 30 days of Bret Hart’s WWF contract must be agreed upon by both Bret Hart and Vince McMahon. One side cannot force a finish on the other.”
      3. Bret Hart already had worked his contractually obligated 270 days in the calendar year of 1997 BEFORE the Survivor Series. That means Bret did not even have to legally appear at the Survivor Series in Montreal. He could’ve handed Vince the belt the morning of the PPV in Montreal and said “F-ck you. I’m not wrestling tonight.” and there would be absolutely NOTHING Vince McMahon could do about it. Bret Hart worked for free that night in Montreal and that is how Vince treated him.
      4. In October of 1997 (a month before Montreal) Bret went up to Shawn to try to bury the hatchet. Bret said “I just want you to know that despite our differences you are safe with me in the ring. I’m willing to put you over in Montreal if that’s what Vince wants.” Shawn Micheals replied by saying “I appreciate that but I just want you to know that I wouldn’t do the same thing for you.” Would any self-respecting man lose to a guy who disrespected you to your face like that?

Some blame also goes to Eric Bischoff, albeit unintentionally. In the last couple days leading up to the event, everyone had seemed to agree on an interference finish to the match, and Bret could either drop the belt at the December PPV or simply vacate it the next night on RAW (I've never heard which was agreed on there). The biggest problem is Vince feared WCW announcing they had signed Bret immediately after the PPV, and that their rival company boasting they had signed the WWF champion could cause pretty heavy damage to him (a valid concern IMO). Bret tried to contact Bischoff to get him to swear not to announce anything until after Bret had dropped the title, but Eric was apparently out hunting or something and couldn't be reached (this was before everyone had a cell phone, remember). If Bischoff could have been contacted, I wonder if things would have played out differently.

@@Krendall2 Bret signed with WCW right before midnight on 10/31/1997. Bret had Bichoff legally agree not reveal that Bret had signed with WCW until after Survivor Series (on 11/9/1997) to protect the PPV. That is why Bichoff did not reveal that Bret had signed with WCW on the 11/3/1997 episode of Nitro. He wasn’t legally allowed to. Unfortunately Bret should’ve have made Bichoff legally agree not to reveal that Bret had signed with WCW until Bret’s WWF contract expired on 11/30/1997. This mistake is why Bichoff announced that Bret was coming to the WCW on the 11/10/1997 episode of Nitro.

I agree with some of your points…frankly, Bret should have went into Mania 14 the Champ and should have dropped the title to Stone Cold. That would have been far hotter than the HBK vs Stone Cold feud, which didn’t have teeth. And frankly, HBK and Stone Cold didn’t really mesh well, to me. I don’t think Shawn Michaels was a believable adversary to Stone Cold. He most certainly didn’t look like the mean heel next to Austin.
With that being said (and I’m a massive Hitman fan), Vince didn’t screw Bret. When the boss tells you to do your job, you do it. Bret already took a multi-million dollar deal with WCW. It didn’t matter if he didn’t like Shawn Michaels….he was leaving and was told to drop the belt and refused to do so on the LAST day of his contract. Vince, who’d had already been screwed by talent showing up to the competition many times over, did what he needed to do to protect his brand. Had Bret took a pay cut and stayed in WWE, he’d have had a dog in the fight….but he didn’t. At that point, his argument was a moot point.

I've heard the story from the perspective of everyone who knew and some who didn’t. I'm convinced it was real. The main reason i don't think it could have been a work is that vince wasn't out at the time about being the owner. It was a huge stab to kayfabe and i don't think he would have done it. Also eric bischoff was told by bret after he left that it was real. Eric wasn't even in the company and had nothing to gain by keeping vinces secrets.

  • @reyjusuf

Lack of communication. Bret thought he had more time to drop the belt because his contract still went for a few weeks after survivor series. Vince needed Bret to drop the belt at survivor series because he didnt want Bischoff to announce that he signed the reigning wwf champion. I felt that Vince did not communicate this properly to Bret. Bret is a stand up guy. He never wanted to leave wwf as champions. He was willing to drop the belt after survivor series to anyone.

It’s not like today where homosexuality is more understood by society and isn’t something perceived as bad like in the 60’s and 70’s, even when I was at school in the 80’s & 90’s it was an insult to call someone gay or queer etc. Though in 97 in my last year at school a girl joined our school who was a lesbian and was open about it and she was excepted though I feel if it was a boy he still would’ve been teased, I just think the boys were interested in this attractive girl who was gay and the boys thought it was cool. She might of been teased if she looked butch and wasn’t attractive with a good boy and big breasts.

17:04 There's no "seemingly" about it. They've flat-out said that the reason Davey got the belt was because the show was in England. If the show was in Washington DC, as originally planned, then Bret would have dropped the title directly to Shawn. Also, the match at the following Survivor Series was NOT title-for-title. Only Bret's title was on the line.

Bret played the part of wwf champion well....he was a favorite of mine as a child... unfortunately I think he played that part so well because he believed he won that belt. He believed he was a competitor, when in reality he was an entertainer, and was given that belt, he didn't win it. He worked hard for sure, to get where he got, but he might have forgot, it's just a show, it's just a work. I'll always be a Bret Hart fan. There are too many people that would have had to keep it secret to this day that it's just not possible. If it were a work, Bret wouldn't still have genuine hurt and anger in his eyes to this very day every time it's mentioned and Shawn wouldn't have true guilt in his. Seriously just watch any interview where one or the other is asked about the Screwjob and just look at their eyes. That tells you how real it was and still is to both of them.

The idea of the double cross at Survivor Series 1997 came from Jim Cornette. But Corny didn't suggest it because he hated Bret. If any thing, he hated Shawn and respected Bret. Jim Cornette suggested the idea because he's fed up with everyone in Connecticut, he's gaining weight, he's depressed, he's lost his patience with the WWF Creative, and no one can figure out "what are we going to do" because Bret doesn't want to do business with Shawn because Shawn's a prick. Cornette basically, because no one can think of anything else, throws his hands up in the air tells Vince to just double cross Bret. No matter what Russo or HHH or anyone else says, the idea of the double cross of Bret Hart at Survivor Series in 1997 came from James E Cornette.

It made Vince A heel and helped Bret by setting him up as the biggest baby-face going into WCW..........but if you think about it for just a second, in what world would any wrestler expect to leave one company, with their belt, to go to the competition? You can't do that.
It was Vince's belt and Vince's show.
    It's a work.

    • @ryane5483
      @ryane5483 Před rokem

Yeah, if that were the case, I can see how it can be seen as a work. But it was nowhere near the case. First of all, and the most obvious reason, Survivor Series WASN'T Bret Harts last night in WWF. He was still under contract with WWF for another month. His WCW contract had his start date at December 10th. Bret was tentatively scheduled to be on the WWF December PPV in some capacity. Which was the day before his WCW start date. Even if that wasn't the case, there was ZERO chance of Bret showing up on Nitro with the belt. That theory has been debunked multiple times since 1997. In 1995 Alundra Blayze showed up in WCW with the WWF women's title and threw it in the trash on live TV. WWF sued. In late 1995, WWF started airing spoof skits with the " Huckster", "Nacho Man" etc... They were even going to do a Huckster vs Nacho Man at Wrestlemania. But WCW sued WWF for theft of intellectual property so Vince killed the angle before it went to court. When Scott Hall and Kevin Nash went to WCW, they never said who they were, but Scott Hall was very clearly doing the Razor Ramon character with the tropical shirts, slicked back hair, toothpick and Cuban accent. Vince sued WCW for theft of intellectual property. They quickly settled and like 2 weeks later, Scott Hall was just Scott Hall and he had lost the accent etc. Long story short, things went down the way they did for a number of reasons and neither Bret or Vince's hands were clean. But showing up on Nitro as WWF champion wasn't one of them. That's probably the only thing in the entire situation that Vince, Bret and Bischoff all told the same story on. Not to mention the fact that the court documents confirming the intellectual property suits and settlements along with Brets WWF and WCW contracts have been out there for years. If Bret Hart had shown up on Nitro with the WWF title, it would have been his last day as a professional wrestler and WCW would have died 3 years before they did. There would been massive lawsuits for theft of intellectual property and breach of contract against WCW, Eric Bischoff, Ted Turner and Bret Hart. And they wouldn't have had a prayer of winning any of them.
