An old Corelle dinner plate works to lay hot tools on if you don't have a silicone mat. Suitable for hot glue guns too and the excess glue peels right off. It's so rewarding to create your own craft supplies! Just discovered your channel today while hunting down gesso recipes. Great technique and so meditative!
Just a tip...the plastic and metal rest for the tool IS very useful, IF you tape it to your work surface. Taping it, prevents it from shifting.
+HKreations oooohhh yes that is a very good idea!! Thank you 😀
great idea, some people are poor problem solvers.
Thanks for the tip about the plastic dividers Janelle!! I've used mylar with my wood burning tool before and I can relate to the frustration with that material. I'm going ot try the file folder dividers like you use!!
Thanks for the helpful tips and info. Very helpful. I own a couple of these wood burning tools & the WRMK FUSE Tool, which will all work great for this. My only hold up in making my own stencils has been the difficulty of finding a stencil material that i like, that's not too thick to cut details out of and is affordable. The file folders will work great, so thats very helpful!! My only advice to you as far as the video tutorial goes would be to try and sum it up a little and not talk about unrelated things so much because i honestly found myself getting impatient and almost closed the video because it was taking so long to start the actual tutorial. I hope you don't take my comment negatively, because i don't mean it that way at all. Just hoping to give you my opinion as a viewer. Thanks again for all the info & tips! Im definitely doing this asap.
I am a self-proclaimed “stencil ho” … and have invested so much money already. Doing art journaling, there’s so many ideas I have on stencils that I’ve rudely sketched … I’m def going to start making my own
Thank you for sharing your collection, they’re beautiful
Wow, thank you so much for this video. A friend of mine posed a challenge to me and I said I could do it...didn't have a clue as to how I'd get it done and, I've been looking at many DIY video on stenciling. Thanks to you, I believe I can do it! Yours is the most explanatory that I've seen... you're easy to listen to and that helps me stay focused. Thank you and please do more videos.
Never would have realized this. Thank you so much!
I use the glass plate out of my old non-working microwave for setting my glue gun on. Works great, don't have to worry about drips cause when they have cooled, they pop right off.

thank you for sharing loved your stencils
Thank you! This helped me so much. I'm a writer and working on self-publishing one of my books and as an artist, I'm designing the cover for it but found it would be easier to create a stencil for one key element to help design but custom stencils like I need don't really exist. Much appreciated with this!
I’m so happy that I found you ! I’ve been trying to find someone or something on here that could help me out with this ! Finally I found you thank goodness you’re absolutely amazing ! Thank you so very much for sharing this video with us ! ❤️
Thank you for taking the time to show this. Very helpful🤗
Awesome video, great technique, gonna try this tomorrow, since I already have these supplies... I would never have thought of this! 😆
Awesome thanks for sharing your tips & techniques x
This was perfect!!!..thank you for sharing. I want stencils in abundance and YOU have given me the perfect path.
I’ve been trying to think of an easy way to make stencils. Brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you for sharing, this is a great tutorial!
Super helpful! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent!
Thank you so very much for sharing this technique. Having a blast with it creating my own stencil designs.
What a great idea! Definitely going to give this a try! Thanks for sharing!
THANK YOU!!! Now I can use all my die cuts to make stencils!!! And I have 526 stamps that I can use (for personal crafting only) for my cards...thank you again!!
This is great! I had no clue before.
Janelle.. use the little plastic tabs that are used to close bread bags, for taping to the sticky side of your tape. this helps in having the end of tape THERE and ready to use..
What a great idea … I know it sounds ridiculously simple, but love it
I agree. I use them. TY.
I just found your channel and I am so Grateful for your knowledge!
What a gear idea. Thanks for sharing
Wow...This must be a bonus and I love it. I just ordered one of the Plaid stencil cutters. Thank you!
Wow, that was amazing. I’ve been wanting to try stencil but I thought it was going to be too expensive.
Thanks for sharing this way to make your own. That makes it affordable. Janice
I've seen people store their stencils made from the plastic notebook dividers in 3 ring binder notebooks and then punch holes in the printed paper to keep the stencils from tangling with each other or cutting off the side tabs and storing the masks and stencils in transparent document sleeves with the paper behind it showing the design. You have some beautiful designs there. I have a wood burning tool which looks very similar. I've been wondering if I could use it to make my own stencils if I got a fine tip for it. Sod-dur-ring is the pronunciation for "soldering" (silent L). My son used to solder parts together at work.
Great stencil how to.cant’t wait to get started.I have a lot of die kits I can use. Thanks for sharing.
WOW !!!! LOVE THIS !!!
+Karen Mckenzie thanks for watching & I’m glad you liked it!
Super Video, THANK YOU for all the tips.
Thank you for a great video. I’ve never seen a tool like the one you used and now I can’t wait to get one!
Very helpful thankyou! I'm a man that uses stencils alot for my airbrush to get a nice foundation for my freehand and I wanted to make my own stencils so this helped alot compared to other video's!!!
What an amazing idea.
These are so awesome...thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I really enjoyed it!
TY so much for this very informative video. I am glad that it doesn't smoke while you are cutting the plastic. I've experienced making holes on milk jugs for my winter seed sowing with one of those cheap ones and it's smokey and dangerous to inhale.
New to you from following collaboration. Love all the tips and tricks to creating your own stencils. They can be really pricy. So I'll be trying this for sure. Anywhere I can save some money I do for sure. TFS. Have a great week! Take care. Blessings
Fantastic video. You just solved my problem!!
Thank you. Very helpful with lots of great tips. The tip about FB groups vs. business page was a win!!
Thank you so much for sharing how to make stencils. The tip on using plastic dividers was great. I have used stencil material, but it is costly. Thank you for sharing. I will be getting a Plaid stencil cutter.
Wow, those are all so beautiful
Great job, thank you for your video, I'll have to try this
the flowers look like lily's of the valley
Thank you so much Janelle for another great video!! Very informative!! :D
+Laurie Bouck 💗💗💗

Found ur channel on the collab! New Subscriber! Thanks for this, I love this! So creative and ingenious!
I LOVE stencils! This is great! I get lightweight plastic folders at DAISO for 10 for $1.50. Can't beat that price.
Thank you for teaching this technique. I really ❤️ . I really appreciate 🙏
You are amazing, Janelle. 😳
Mind blown! 😻. Annie
+blonde lebanese well thank you!!!
Harbor freight has a solder tool with a bunch of tips for $10-$15. First video of yours I have watched and it was great. Thank you so so much for sharing this with us. You have a new subscriber and can't wait to see what other videos you have
Great lesson.....thank you
Finally watched this video. My computer died on me and finnaly after months got one. I hope you do more videos.
Wow, this tutorial for stenciling is awesome , I have bought a few Stencils and yes they were pretty pricey however I started to think and the hamster in the wheel like the cartoons started to run very fast and I started to search for a tutorial just like this one like so many other people I already have most of the tools that you mentioned but I will be making a run to my local dollar store and purchase a picture frame with a glass and I'm going to try your technic I really learned a lot about stenciling in your video, I too have spent way too much on Stencils and not to mention the Snail Mail, UPS ,Fed ex,, DHL Etc...Etc...Etc...
They take forever and they always blame it on we're short staffed or Covid like I said it takes way too long and some time I want it ASAP because I am working on a groovy thing...
Again I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your help...I am a very satisfied subscriber to your channel.
Keep up the great work and I will continue to tune in to see your other works of art.
Sincerely,
Michael
you are perfect perfect artist:)) thank you for this video:)
Can’t wait to get my stencil cutter
You should use those hot knives in a well ventilated space, you are melting plastic after all. I use a hot knife aka soldering pencil 25W for cutting nylon and hot tacking it for making kites.
hi great video. I use overhead sheets and my wood burning tool. i even used old xrays but they are really thick
Hi, just read your comment and I would caution against using old x-rays as some types contain nasty chemicals that could cause harm if heated up.
I’m so glad I came across your video. I’ve been buying so many stencils and it’s become very costly. I just found your FB group. I am wondering if Mylar sheets can be used too? Thanks
Very helpful video
Nice work mam
It would have helped a lot if you had given us the link to buy the cutting tools from in the description box.
Thank you, I have never seen this done.
Thank you so much for sharing about ‘stencil cutting’ and yess I use to have a expensive machine and sold it again. Anyhow without machine but this is more effectief. There is only one thing I want to know, how do I get a print from negatief to the positief, like you showed here with these beautiful flowers. Is there an app? can I chance it in procreate? is there another tutorial just about this from you? Well I really would like to know, cause I really want to work with a stencil cutter, thank you so much already for your time, Laura
Just a thought, what do you do about the degassing of the burnt plastic? Some of these plastics burned are carcinogenic. My hubby makes me wear a gas mask and have good ventilation.
Thank you for commenting about this! 🙏 It’s scary when people are inspired and excited to go off and do a new thing they have learned… but with no idea how deadly the fumes can be 😨.
(From a former theatrical props maker.)
Yes ..so much of art is plastic - that's why I avoid acrylics
so cool thank you
thank u so much for this video 💖💖
Brilliant
Thanks so much for this video! The only thing that would make it expensive is buying Photoshop, but I think I can just draw my images, instead. Thanks, again.
Could you post the link to the soldering iron you're using? I've never seen one with a tip like that! I have been wanting some custom rat stencils, so I'd love to try it on some of my own photos!
Very very beautiful
Do you change all your photos from color to black and white to create stencils with them? thanks for the informative video
Thank you! I dont have a printer but can draw what I want. Im going to try it for an eagle I want to turn into an Early American style plaque. Ive already got the clear plastic paper organizers like the ones you use. Perfect. I will stencil the eagle onto a board then go back and paint some details. Thank you so much! The "soddering" iron is one of those words spelled nothing like it gets pronounced. Weird huh? The L makes no sound. A lot like the word sword... the w is silent. But we totally got this. Lets make something!
Janelle great information and very helpful. However you might like to consider editing out all those ummms.
Every time I have gone on Facebook they have locked me out for some unknown reason, therefore I only go on CZcams and Pinterest. Now I have found CZcams is blocking some of the images from being seen. What that means to me is that CZcams is just like the rest of the media outlets. But I do like what you do and hope I can follow you.
Thank YOU!!!

Thanks for this video, but isn't there a way to be able to save & reuse the stencil that you took the green flowers from? Is there a way for the loose pieces to be put back together for that outer stencil to be usable?
Yes, because i use only teh negative part of the stencils, i wouldn't need the flower form itself ...
This might be a stupid question but I just came across your video and what I'm seeing a lot of is the plastic that the instances are made from our very flimsy, people say use my alarm for like how do I know what weight I want it not as thin as what you have I want it to be a little thicker so can you guide me that way help please. And yes I love your Channel
Wow this is amazing! I have so many of those colored dividers lying around, thank so much for this!
+Mighty Corgi thanks for watching!!
OMG I HAD TO COME BACK TO THIS VIDEO JUST TO SAY THANK YOU WITH MY PLASTIC DIVIDERS AND SOLDERING GUN THE STENCIL I MADE WERE SUPER EASTY
I want to make a wall Moroccan pattern. They are around $45.
This is great.
How did your wall turn out?
yes how did it work out. I saw that on pinterest..and it was awesome
What so you call the soldering iron use for stencils? What is the temperature range? Is it the same as the wood burning tool?
+Wilma Taranda I’m not sure of the temperature range, it usually says in the description online or in the package for both a soldering tool & a wood burning tool. You can search for “soldering tool” or “plaid stencil cutter” on amazon & either should work. “Plaid” is the brand name of the ones I like to use.
So, actual Mylar or blank stencil sheets won’t work with the iron?❓❓❓ Thanks again for sharing 😊
Thank you.
I think lily of the valley flowers!
I noticed that you lost the inner sections, the way you cut your stencil...there is a way to save by not cutting exactly and leaving area inside by leaving part of the " vine lines "out" so you can use the background stencil as well. You might even do a second stencil with the areas lost saved in it, this stencil you picked was a very difficult type to do. (They were Lily of the Valley?).I loved your ideas and suggestions . I would have liked to see a demo of the stencil you made. Thanks. :) :) :)
Orla Klassen thanks for watching! I do have some videos where I have used my DIY stencils but the video is titled & focuses on a different technique or subject matter so it wouldn’t be easy to find it....I think I should definitely do a video that focuses on using my DIY stencils & title it accordingly. So I will put that on my list of videos to film!
This is exactly what I needed! Thanks!
Hi Janelle, thank you for this! Isn't this also the same as a "word-burning tool"?? You mention soldering, but just wondering if the wood-burning tool is similar? I have one, but haven't used it yet.
+Vonalda Utterback yes it’s the same thing. Definitely try your tool!
and I'm here 2 years later at 1:55am lol. I call it wind down therapy.
Hi sorry can you put a link for Amazon please as I want to buy it here I Ireland. Thank you so much for tutorial. God bless
diana jane i have Amazon Canada so you will need to search for it in your amazon. Just look for “wood burning tool” or “craft burning/cutting tool”
THANK YOU
Also, burning plastic with a hot tool and inhaling the fumes is a major carcinogenic hobby !
