Our latest song isn’t about what you think it’s about. Yes, we love Lewis Capaldi. We love his unassuming, atypical nature, his gravelly vocals, and his heart that lends personal power to his music. We just loved this melody and everything about the emotionality of this tune. It wasn’t until later in our arranging process that we discovered the true meaning behind Lewis’ lyrics. At first listen we thought, perhaps like many of you, the words were pleadings after a bad breakup wondering whether there was something that could have been said that might have saved the relationship. But that’s not it at all. Lewis wrote it to emotionally process the death of his aunt, who ended her own life. If you are struggling and considering suicide as an option to ease your pain or dispel your darkness, know that your presence is priceless -- worth infinitely more than your absence. Watch the sunrise every day you can and consider it a symbol of your total reset, a “do-over,” a second chance to start again. See it as light that breaks through the night. Yes, night will come again. And again. But so does the sunrise. It always will. And which one is more beautiful? More powerful? More present? More like who you really are inside?

    About The Piano Guys:
Billions of views. Millions of followers. Wonders of the World. Concerts in every corner of the globe. Who knew all this could have started in a little Yamaha Piano Store in a tiny town of Southern Utah? But that’s what happened. Paul, a Yamaha dealer who dabbled in videography, Jon, a professional pianist, Al, a music producer and studio engineer, and Steve, a cellist with a creative superpower called ADHD, all serendipitously joined forces to create the most successful CZcams instrumental music group in history. The Piano Guys are watched and streamed over 3 million times EVERY DAY.
They’ve made their mark by taking the piano and cello out of their concert hall context and putting them in places you’d never expect to see them: On a speeding train, a cliff’s edge, a beach, or in front of the Seven Wonders. The Piano Guys’ mission is to inspire and spread hope through incomparably imaginative music videos filmed all over the world.

Steve here - this video was very tender for me because of the meaning behind it. Lewis Capaldi wrote it in order to emotionally process the death of his aunt who ended her own life. I have a family member who died the same way. He was suffering from such debilitating mental illness that I know he wasn’t in his right mind when he took his life, but like Lewis’ words say, I played the blame game. I blamed myself for not doing more, saying more, not being more aware. I blamed the darkness that is pervasive in some aspects of this world right now. I even blamed him. I felt like his poor choices had led to his challenges. But then one day as I was praying, my heart changed. I realized that maybe it was the other way around -- that his challenges had led to his poor choices instead. The blame, the anger, and even the pain started to melt into compassion. For those of you, like me, that have felt devastated by this loss and this confusion, there is still hope. Hope that one day all things will be made right. Hope that, as mental illness inhibitions somehow are stripped away in the next life, challenging barriers can crumble away too and allow for light to enter where darkness was before. There is hope for reconciliation, healing, and for love to completely smother self-loathing. I believe in second chances. And third and fourth and fifth. For everyone. That’s what I hope this instrumental version of this tune feels like to you. If you are hurting, wondering, blaming, searching, praying, hoping against hope, this song is for you.

As a suicide survivor, the demons of depression and anxiety can be overwhelming. But if you stay, even for a moment longer, you will find your "semicolon" that connects you to the next part of living.
Don't be afraid to be vulnerable and talk to those you love about what is going on inside. Get professional help. If you don't jive with one therapist, find another. The trial and error sucks, not going to lie, but when you find the right combination of support, you will find hope. And that is what keeps us all going...

I'd like to address the often-overlooked adult male depression issue. As someone who has struggled with depression and some thoughts of suicide in the past it's really important that you realize as a dad, husband, father figure, etc., that you are every bit as susceptible to depression and mental health issues as anyone else.
There is no shame in reaching out to someone you trust for help, in getting counseling, or being on medication - none of these things make you weak or "less of man" so to speak.
For me my depression often comes out in frustration and anger and just wanting to shut down and avoid dealing with things.
Often times we fall into the same traps our fathers might have - or maybe you come from a broken home without one at all - but we owe it to the people we love to get the help we need.

My husband also deals with depression... there is so much pressure on him, all his young children look to him with such trust and love... not realizing the stress that is on the back that they like to ride as a horsey when he gets home.
We have also noticed triggers for his depression aswell. SOY, ARTIFICIAL FOOD COLORING, and LACK OF SUNLIGHT... getting him out in nature helps too.
if we watch those, and of course I'm there for him, he does a lot better.

So I've taken it to heart and any time that I feel a little down, I encourage the closest person to me. Encouragement is a gift that gives both ways and just keeps on giving. I put off listening to this song, but decided to finally give in and listen to it today. My 18-year-old daughter, Britnee, loved this song. I would turn the station when it came on the radio because it is so sad. I remember a little while before Britnee unexpectedly passed away last year after a surgery in SLC, that this song came on and Britnee was in the car with me. I said I didn't want to listen to it because it's sad and she looked sad at my comment. I didn't know then that she only had a few months left to live, but she knew. She knew for most of her life that she wasn't meant for this earth, but she couldn't tell me that. She is a pure soul and is busy working on the other side with her Savior and family members who have gone before. This song always makes me think of her. She could play anything on the piano and often played Piano Guys music. I miss hearing her play, but she left us many videos of her playing, and for that I'm grateful.

For many years now I have not listened to the radio in my car, only music on a USB flash drive. I update many things from time to time. And only on the fingers of one hand can one count the performers whom I do not erase. Among them are you guys. You are a miracle of nature! Listening to you, in addition to pleasure, you often think: Is this how I live? What can be done to improve this world? I'm 61, I know what I'm talking about .... I have two family members who took their own lives as well as friends and family friends. I also have a friend who attempted it, but the gun broke, making him rethink his choice. Depression is nothing new for me. Lots of people I care about have suffered from it...as have I. This last year especially I've experienced it unlike ever before. The gospel is the only light I see when I'm in a deep, dark place, and your music helps that light shine brighter and give if more warmth! Thank you for your music and thank you for playing this song! I believe strongly that one of the best ways to touch lives is through music.

I may not understand why I’m going through the challenges that face me, but I do know that God put me here for a reason and that is to help others that are hurting too. You are a blessing for others even if you don’t realize it. No matter how dark it gets, hang in there and know God will get you through! 💐

I am a believer in Christ and found a new book a few months ago that has also been a comfort...it's soo hard as a parent to see your child suffer and often don't know how to help. The book is titled..Praying the scriptures over your adult children. It is truly a wonderful book. And to those who are experiencing this in your own lives...I lift you in prayer right now....God knows exactly what you need...He has not forgotten you. And I'm trusting him to meet your needs....both great and small.🙏🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕💕

I fell by the wayside, like everyone else
I hate you, I hate you, I hate you
But I was just kidding myself
Our every moment, I start to replace
    'Cause now that they're gone
All I hear are the words that I needed to say
When you hurt under the surface
    Like troubled water running cold
Well, time can heal, but this won't
    So, before you go
Was there something I could've said
To make your heart beat better?
If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather
    So, before you go
Was there something I could've said
To make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
    So, before you go
Was never the right time, whenever you called
Went little, by little, by little until there was nothing at all
Our every moment, I start to replay
But all I can think about is seeing that look on your face
When you hurt under the surface
    Like troubled water running cold
Well, time can heal, but this won't
    So, before you go
Was there something I could've said
To make your heart beat better?
If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather
    So, before you go
Was there something I could've said
To make it all stop hurting?
It kills me how your mind can make you feel so worthless
    So, before you go
Would we be better off by now
If I'd let my walls come down?
Maybe, I guess we'll never know
    You know, you know
    Before you go
Was there something I could've said
To make your heart beat better?
If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather
    So, before you go

Now, I am in a much better mental state, I am a manager for a great company, and I'm making my own way and doing things on my own, through my own strength. Reach out when you need to,, and when you don't. Hold on to quality friends, you know who they are. They will be there when you need them and when youI don't. Breathe, meditate. Depression can be a very harsh mistress. I know as I have battled it for the last 13 months since the death of my wife of 40 years to a terminal disease. It took me 6 months before I realized how far I had sunk and where I was heading. I was just here and no longer living. I was just wanting to be with her. If not for a friend who reminded me of how my daughters & granddaughter would feel if I were to die was the little bit of push I needed to go and get help. I am much better today. I still have my days where the darkness strikes me out of nowhere, but each day that goes by it gets a bit better. I can see the light now and I am working towards keeping the darkness away as much as possible. It will take work, but life does improve and you will find enjoyment in your life again. Trust me when I say life is worth living. Even with the pain that we carry, life still is worth living. And the more you live life the less that pain will sting.

Sometimes I use this as a reality check, when I feel self conscious or down: Remember most people aren’t thinking about how you look or how you dress, most people are thinking about what other people think of them, especially in high school, where I’m at in life right now, most people are self conscious, some just hide it better than others. When I realize that I’m not alone in my struggles, and that some of them are even common for people my age it helps relieve me of the guilt that can sometimes creep in. Next time you feel like your engulfed in the darkness, reach out and grasp the light, even just thinking of the people that love you, and the people who do care, can be a flame in the darkness.

Oh, Piano Guys. I've been here from the beginning and your music always fills me up. Thank you for sharing so much light! And to anyone who's battling anything hard: loss of a loved one, mental illness, a difficult breakup - so many hard things! It can get better! Just don't quit. Life cannot get better if you take an early exit. Sure things can get worse as well, but extinguishing your life is not the answer. We all have personal growth to do and light to share. Stay. Look outward. There are people who need the unique gifts you have to offer.

I love the look of joy that they both have on their faces as they play. It makes me happy that they are able to do something they love and are also able to bring joy to others. ❤️

Music is a way of expression and I can feel every note has more power than a freight train. Thank you guys so much. You may not know this but you've been there through my exams, my stress, and have been my inspiration. This song means a lot to me as well... Thank you guys for everything.

I hope your beautiful music and words help that person that needs to hear it. I lost my grandmother, who I never met to suicide in a very tragic way. This destroyed my mother’s peace of mind to the end of her life.

Whoever you are, I want you to know you’ve got this. You’re not alone in whatever you’re feeling, be it depression or anxiety or anything else, there’s someone out there who knows just what you’re going through. And before you go-think to yourself: those other people struggling like I am, I don’t want to leave them alone to fight their battles by themselves. We may not know each other, but we are in this together!

I think that this music really has a purpose and that it is not built with only two instruments but with a life, with experiences that build character, and share more than a good moment because what God does in each one really transcends. Now where many people with different lives come together in a single language, which is music, to listen and dream, to say what perhaps with words we cannot, to be part of this purpose, because each note heard is life because God manifests Himself . Thanks to The Piano Guys for their music.
