"Born on the 4th of July" is Tom Cruise best work.
    its his best acting.
    its his best movie.
because of the heavy subject matter it doesnt get any where near enough attention and credit.
but if your a big Tom fan then you will love it.
like i say its by far the best acting of his career. the role demands so much.
"Rain Man" is another Tom classic that he doesnt get enough credit for.
Since becoming such an action hero super star its easy for folk to forget just how good a natural actor he used to be.

Good one again, Gents. And yes, you have to, have to, HAVE TO watch Almost Famous.

Cruise is a hell of an actor. He just doesn't do the roles that gets critical attention for his acting skills anymore. He's basically resigned himself to being cinema's savior by keeping big budget action movies viable for theatergoers. But if you watch movies like Magnolia, Rain Man or Born on the Fourth of July (which he should've gotten an Oscar for) you'll see the man has serious acting ability when he wants to use it. Even here in Jerry Maguire, you can see it. The man's a star for a reason.

Shine is a really great movie and Geoffrey Rush is incredible in it. I think he deserved the award (in as much as anyone "deserves" things like that). '96 was a big year for independent movies (Jerry Maguire was the only nominee for Best Picture that was released by a major studio -- all the others were indies). I do miss 90s Tom Cruise, though. He used to be so willing to try different things and challenge how audiences saw him. Nowadays he's Franchise Guy.
Just watched The Last Boy Scout for the first time last week, and my goodness that opening is INSANE.

The stats that they describe Rod having would’ve made him one of the top receivers in the NFL that season.
There is a deleted scene of Rod in a Reebok commercial.
As of 2024, three out of the four main cast members have one an Oscar. Cuba, Ragina King and Renee Zellweger with two Oscars.
The hockey player’s son at the beginning of the movie is Drake Bell from the Nickelodeon series Drake and Josh.

One of my fav movies of all time. Tom Cruise is obvi an amazing talent who completely immerses himself in a character. Which is why we buy it/fall for him. (Even though I’m horrified by everything Scientology and it does make me cringe) anywho, Agree with Joe, this is a film that reminds us why we love movies.
Never considered it as part of the rom com genre, not sure why you thought that going in, not sure how to categorize it. Secondary characters absolutely crush for me. Bonnie Hunt and Regina King are perfection. Nice watch along!

Emily Procter (Ainsley from The West Wing) appears briefly as one of Jerry's exes on the engagement party video.

The relationship dynamic is also a bit unique in this one, because she's a young widow, not divorced/unmarried, etc. I've always wondered if there were some deleted scenes that delved more into that. They never really explained her ex-husband's death.

This was the perfect "date movie" when it came out. Half chick-flick, half sports movie, so everyone was happy. Also, I remember thinking how brilliant it was for a college athlete to major in marketing, plenty of career opportunities in the sports world if they don't make it as a player.

BTW, if you like science fiction Cruise does some AMAZING scifi movies.
