I hate it when you need a replacement part for anything and it's obsolete and can't find anything else to fix it. Such a simple and cheap fix that most lamp stores wouldn't want us to know. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for these hacks!! I've been racking my brain and looking around the house for something that might work! Fantastic! I'm so thankful for your post on CZcams! 😀
Thanks for the useful information . My wife brought a lamp shade home from IKEA we could not figure out how to get it on the lamp until I seen your video showing the Ikea lampshade has adapters. Saved us a trip back to Ikea .
Thank you for time & energy you expended to do this vid. Grand Brass Lamp company wasn’t in my radar but now it is. Cool they’ve been around for ages too.
Ikea really needs to include this size adapter with all their shades for USA!! It's been a problem for years! How hard can it be to provide a small plastic adapter this size?? They sell millions in the US... Get it out there Ikea!
Glad someone else is as bothered as I am by Made in China all over Ikea. In fact they’ve absolutely swamped the entire market. It’s abysmal how this has been allowed. Yes it is tragic 😢
Wow, we recently got some European lamps with shades that hang crooked, and my idea was a giant washer which would provide a flat surface for a shim, and here you are with the exact same idea! Funny how minds come to the same solution.
I just found this video seven years later. I found a lamp in a thrift store without a shade. An European style shade fits the lamp. I could not find a shade of the right size or color. I had the idea of buying a shade at Ikea...a basic white shade of the right size. I will cover it in fabric. However, as everyone knows it doesn't fit the lamp. I was looking for a solution when I found this video. You can cut a wider circle in the flat Ikea adapter and use it instead of using cardboard or trying to find a washer. It fits perfectly.
OMG im so glad i saw this!! i was browsing the ikea website and didnt realise their "system" doesnt match my old lamp either!!! Thanks! (in the ikea site, they dont show pictures of the inside of it. Sneaky sneaky)
LOL I was about to say that a washer would be great to hold it from falling through...smart! Not what I was looking for but a great lamp hack for sure!
Thank you so much. I have been trying to figure out how to use my lamp shade after the little adapter that came with it broke during installation. Praises! I can now install the lamp shade and it stays on with no wobble to it.
Thank you so much for share this information. We moved and lose these small pieces and we don't have any idea how to fix this and use my beautiful lamps again.
Three years later I am here with the same issue as you! Bought a lamp shade at world market and realized i need to find a solution to get it to fit my non world market base!
I think the true lesson here is to resist the urge to buy IKEA lamps. They're just too weird! Unless you want to consider them completely disposable, you'll probably have problems trying to fix them. Also, pay attention to the bulb size! So many cute lamps take weird bulbs that you'll have to keep in stock. My policy is, if it doesn't take a regular medium base bulb, I'm not buying it, as I only want to stock one type of light bulb. This comes in handy when you can find lightbulbs on sale, as you can buy a lot of just one kind.
U do know u can get the ring adapter off Amazon for a uk fitting, or a European fitting most lamp shades come with them u can take it of or leave it on but yah Amazon sells the ring adapters
I think I got them at Home Depot. I bought a bunch because I was concerned they would be heard to find. You could certainly get them from Grainger's: www.grainger.com/search/fasteners/washers/flat-washers?tv_optin=true&searchQuery=washers&searchBar=true
Hi Henry. Thank you for the video (almost half a millions views, congratulations!). Maybe you can save me. I think you have the exact same table lamp as me. Mine some some kind of nut right at the bottom of the base; it doesn't stand up straight. The problem is that I don't know how it looks when it is whole; I wonder if there's any way you could send me a picture of the bottom of that base?
Hmmmm..... Thank you. I don't have IKEA lamps/lampshades. I actually got my two small lamps from a dollar store for 8 bucks each, but have the same problem.
I have 2 beautiful hobnail milkglass lamps that were my mothers. She purchased them from the Jewel Tea Company if memory serves years ago. Unfortunately while the milkglass bodies of the lamps are intact the globes are long gone as well as the hardware they nested in if you know what I'm talking about as I'm at a loss as to what the technical name for the hardware might be. I lucked upon two beautiful milkglass globes at a garage sale that I am hoping will fit with the right hardware. Any clue where I might find such hardware? I'm really excited about repurposing these lamps from the late 1950's.
I put a dubble piece of zip ties on the side where the lamp was too low to make it even. Where he is putting the washer. Works perfectly, although it would be better if wasn't crooked in the first place
I thought I had solved the problem when I realized I needed to purchase lampshades with the “uno” hardware for my IKEA floor lamp! Little did I know the challenge had just begun. Unfortunately the hardware in the lampshade that I bought was too small to fit over the IKEA lamp’s socket 😂 So, the stem of the bulb won’t connect. 🤷🏼♀️
at 1:17 you show the lamp shade and threadded base... and then at 1:28 you show all of the adapters - That round one, at the bottom is supposed to fit in the lamp shade? I'm in the UK and the lamp shades are all like that - in fact that American lamp frame that you show at 1:11 is something I've never seen over here - but well done for hacking it :)
I bought a Nymo 17 inch gorgeous Black Gold lampshade and it didn’t fit my floor lamp . Do you think if I buy an Ikea floor lamp it will work ? I’m looking at their Arstid Brass Floor lamp , but I haven’t found any videos to see if there is compatibility . I contacted ikea and they did not give me a straight answer . Please help me . Im traveling to my closest ikea 180 miles away this week and want to find a lamp base so I can use my beautiful lampshade . Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
I assume so. Best bet is to make sure you ring the shade with you and find an appropriate Should be fine. Just bring the shade and make sure you get a floor lamp that works
In your opinion, would it work if I just glued the washer to the lamp and then glue the shade base to the washer?? ..or would that be too wobbly? I realize I wouldn't be able to remove the shade, but I would use a glue that would hold but isn't 100% permanent.. (ordering the screw on thingy + a little rewiring = I'd rather throw this lamp out the window and buy a new one lol)
@@silsurf1 no, it’s just mine was the other way round… the lampshade was too small for the lamp so I stuck a large plastic washer below to how it in place and now the bulb doesn’t fully screw in so the metal hoop in the centre of the lampshade is touching the metal screw threads on the bulb 😬
We get this problem in the Uk all the time even with our ceiling lights. The good old EU have poked their nose in yet again with their stupid ideas and we now have stupid fitting shades with stupid adapters. If you lose the adapter your knackered and can't use the shade. It's not just IKEA shades either.

I wanna know why lamp shades cost $90?! They should be about $15.
They cost £15 on Temu

Finally! A well explained and totally informative solution to this conundrum!! Thank you..

Ikea is up to their eyeballs with Made in China. They were not originally that way. Tragic.
Glad someone else is as bothered as I am by Made in China all over Ikea. In fact they’ve absolutely swamped the entire market. It’s abysmal how this has been allowed.

Thank you for sharing your research. You just saved me a bunch of time and money today and in the future!
Thank you for this tip! And you are correct, Grand Brass Lamp Parts has everything!! 👍🏻👍🏻
@jokabomo This video worth its weight in gold as had not heard of this Grand Brass Lamp. Now I know where to get lamp supplies
Thank you for this info. I've got a couple of cool shades that don't seem to work with any base I've seen.

Excellent advise. Have not been able to find a replacement lamp shade for my Pottery Barn swing arm desk lamp. You are a life saver.

Thank you. I have an Italian suspension floor lamp, and have not been able to find a reasonably priced shade. I will check out IKEA.
Thank you so much for share this information. We moved and lose these small pieces and we don't have any idea how to fix this and use my beautiful lamps again.
👏👏👏thank you sir very helpful your the only one that has helped with this issue w Ikea lamps. Love this 👍❤🙋♀️
Thank you thank you. This washer worked for me.
You are a lifesaver! Thank you!
Yeah!! awesomeness, just what I'm looking for. Thank you
Great, I bought World Market shades that have the connection style your shade has. I’ll start with the washer solution 🙂
Three years later I am here with the same issue as you! Bought a lamp shade at world market and realized i need to find a solution to get it to fit my non world market base!
Thanks for the 'washer idea'..i'll try it.
Well done, finally a smart solution

This is why I always hesitate to buy things at Ikea. They are always sizes that are problematic.

Your awesome! Just what I needed!!!
I love Grand Brass, I've ordered from them several times.

On what does the washer rest? Is it that little bit of tape?
Thank you soooo much !
Your sharing solved my problem .
Awesome !!!

I bought the lamp shade JAKA 25 cm and 33 cm, I fabricate base, the hub and wiring. Metal washer is not safe enough.
thank u!!!
How do you use your finial?? This is ridiculous! I just received a shade with a giant hole in it- ZERO idea what to do!
My hanging IKEA lampshade is wobbly/ crooked how would I remedy that? Do you think I can use the washer idea for a hanging lampshade?
I put a dubble piece of zip ties on the side where the lamp was too low to make it even. Where he is putting the washer. Works perfectly, although it would be better if wasn't crooked in the first place
Wow! Thanks!
Had trouble finding basic small fabric shades for my fan. Decided go to Walmart get fabric and just recover them myself.
What if the i want bigger ring for my lamp ?😢

yes the round one at the bottom is the threaded top to that fixture base. The one that is t 2:15
Where can I purchase two of these washers? I can't find anyone around me that has this size?
I had a hard time initially, just found them at a well stocked hardware store. But you can also find them at places like graingers.com.
is there a hack for lamp shade hole that is too small for my lamp base?
Where do you fine this size washer?! My local hardware stores have no idea where to get this size.
I got them at OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) But someone also mentioned just cutting out a thick cardboard one as an alternative.
@@silsurf1 I just made one with thick cardboard and it works!! Thanks!! 😄
hey Henry! thank you for posting this!!!
I want to put a non-IKEA (style) shade on my IKEA lamp base. Cannot figure out out to get a harp and finial to work on this stupid lamp.
I have the same problem.
There has to be another/better solution. A "little" rewiring is too much for me.
I have looked and prayed and looked again and spoken to the pros, Nope
fantastic!
I love uuu

You cannot add a harp to this style lamp?
At 1:10 you are showing a bracket (for paper lamp shades), where can I buy that one from?
it is called a detachable harp and is available most any big box like Home Depot or Lowes or a lamp store
Do you have the web address for the store in New York?
grandbrass.com/
smart
Make it even cheaper n easier just cut a cardboard washer.
Can anyone tell me where to find this size washer? I haven't found it online yet.
Someone else asked this. I found mine at a good, large hardware store, but I am sure Grainger has them, because they have it all!
In your opinion, would it work if I just glued the washer to the lamp and then glue the shade base to the washer?? ..or would that be too wobbly? I guess if the shade was small enough, but you might be better off getting a new lamp
Alrighty. Thanks for your quick reply :)
Asom thankyou
Sir, I can’t find the correct size washer at Lowe’s or Amazon. Do you have a source?
Grainier.com has them, but you have to buy a five pack. If there is a good hardware store near you they should have something that works.
I tried this and now the bulb won’t screw in properly so the light flickers if you touch it 🤣
adding the washer should in anyway effect the eletrical connection. Perhaps in diassembly something go lose or re-wiring the socket if you did that?
@@silsurf1 no, it’s just mine was the other way round… the lampshade was too small for the lamp so I stuck a large plastic washer below to how it in place and now the bulb doesn’t fully screw in so the metal hoop in the centre of the lampshade is touching the metal screw threads on the bulb 😬
Don't buy weird Ikea lamp until they sale normal products.

Lamp stores, want you to buy a new lamp, and they will lie through their teeth , to sell you one.
