    About Know the Creeds and Councils Video Study:
    In every generation, the Christian church must interpret and restate its bedrock beliefs, answering the challenges and concerns of the day. In Know the Creeds and Councils Video Study, priest and author Justin Holcomb explores centuries of creeds, councils, catechisms, and confessions - not with a dry focus on dates and places, but with an emphasis on the living tradition of Christian belief and why it matters for our lives today.
    Each lecture explains a key statement of faith and its historical context, provides a simple overview of the statement's content and key points, and reflects on its contemporary relevance. As a part of the KNOW series, Know the Creeds and Councils Video Study is designed for personal study or classroom use, but also for small groups and Sunday schools wanting to more deeply understand the foundations of faith.

    Thank you for your work. I've been struggling at my church with the feeling of a shallow education in the Church and Gospel. This conversation is exactly what I've been looking for and conversations like it.
    I appreciate the extended history of the Church you have included. My church loves to preach the Gospel and seems to forget all detail that has happened after 40 AD. And yet, we will say the apostles creed occasionally to start worship (without ever having any context). Since the church expands across all time as well as all countries, the added history is really important! I think this is proven in Jesus' own words that those after him will do much greater works.

    Thanks for this, but I am surprised that at the 6 minute point, this gentleman said Jesus' descent into Hades ...he said... is not based on scripture!! To that I say "Huh???!!!"
    Psalm 16 in Hebrew Masoretic text or Psalm 15 in LXX, it prophesies this would happen and MOREOVER we see here in Acts 2, Peter QUOTING and EXPLAINING that Christ descended in Hades, which as he said, is Sheol in Hebrew as we see in Psalm 16.
    Acts 2
    22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know- 23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him:
    ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
    For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
    26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
    Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.
    ➡27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
    Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.⬅
    28 You have made known to me the ways of life;
    You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’
    29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
    30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,
    ➡ 31 he (David), foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.⬅
    32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. 33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.
    34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
    ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at My right hand,
    35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
    36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
    37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
    38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
    40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

    Once again. The Apostle's Creed is not to spread "new" or "extra-biblical" information.
    You could look up the text about Jesus addressing the angels imprisoned in Tartarus...
    but THAT is not named in the creed. Jesus died and he did go to hell, and there is NO RECORD
    about what Jesus did there, and it's not meant for us to know.

      Hades not Hell... not Gehenna which the early church understood Jesus' use of the term to point to the post-Judgment day eternal 🔥

    I believe with the early Christians that Jesus literally descended to the dead and that the Bible teaches this.

      @@HearGodsWord that is an incorrect understanding of the verse. Jesus told Mary Magdalene “do not touch me for I have not yet ascended to my Father in Heaven.” Jesus did not got to Heaven on Good Friday. The message to the good thief is: “I say to you today, you will be with me in paradise.” The promise is that the good thief would be in paradise eventually, but not in that specific day. Pay attention to the comma, which is an invention of men and not found in the original Greek.

    Just thought it would be a good idea for you to know that you can say it's the beginning of the Trinity this that and the other but the Trinity is nowhere in there that's why the Apostles Creed is Kingdom. Trinity is Ally and again the reason it's not in the Apostles Creed is because the Apostles Creed has truth Trinity has no truth even the demons knew who Jesus was
