Grounding, Acne, and My Falling Foot Arches

  • Proper "grounding" relies on proper sensory perception of the ground. You can't ground unless your brain can sense the ground.
    Two reasons we can't sense the ground is vision and feet. Sometimes a visual system can be "off" and thus our brain can't perceive our surroundings correctly and can't "posture" us correctly in relation to our environment.
    My experience here:
    pritrainer.com/postural-resto...
    Another reason can be because of poor foot mechanics during gait. The lack of appropriate pronation, or "sense" of pronation, can result in abnormal gait mechanics.
    Visually, you'll often see this presented as a "supinated" right foot and a "pronated" left foot.
    pritrainer.com/pronated-left-...
    Lack of grounding can lead to heighten sympathetic nervous system activity. I have a hunch that my food sensitivities, that I self diagnosed as histamine intolerance, was really driven by a lack of grounding that had it's origins in a dysfunctional visual system.

    Neal, after doing PRI exercises for 8 months I have noticed that my right arch has fallen and I can now sense the floor far more easily and often. I have also been able to start running again (after not being able to for a year) since starting PRI and I ran my first ultramarathon this August. It is so great to be able to run without pain again and it is because of your videos that I went to see a PRI practitioner in the first place. Since then your videos have helped me learn seemingly endless amounts about PRI and I am forever grateful for all of the information that you have made available to the public.
    This is not entirely related, but I have been trying to explain the efficacy of PRI to other runners and have found it difficult. The common injury prevention methods in most running circles are strengthen, stretch, and foam roll. I hope you will consider making a video about the shortcomings of foam rolling and stretching, and possibly explain why PRI exercises and the ability to move in and out of neutrality should precede any strengthening efforts. I get a lot of recommended videos on youtube about these methods as ways of solving running injuries and while I don't want to denounce them as useless I personally have found them to be underwhelming methods of mitigating pain and injuries, while postural restoration techniques have made me stronger, faster, more biomechanically efficient, less prone to injury and pain, and improved my aerobic capacity.

    I just cant believe this info(PRI) is not more available to help ppl. I already knew I was rotated, I could see it but all the specialists wont acknowledge it and say there is no such thing. its almost like voodoo what pri can do to the body. I think too many ppl get surgeries and other treatments that are a waste. I know my arch needs to drop, for some reason when I seen you the first time I could feel my right arch relaxing the rest of the day. It was amazing to witness it. You really have no idea how things affect your body. I always wondered why as a teenager my right foot looked so funny. I guess that is from supinating

    Neal,
    You know I am a HUGE fann of yours and watch your videos religously. Due to my right ankle injury I put a paper towel (as you suggest in one of the videos) under the right insole to pronate more (funny as I always thought my right pronation was fine as the arch was low- but you said in one of the vids it was a fake pronation). The other foot- left one, I noticed the arch was very high. How stupid of me not to think that you actually might need different 'stimulation from the ground' in each foot. So I connected my left foot with the ground and of I went for a 10 mile walk. I must say I had the best walk ever as I could feel the ground so well and my walking was like completely different. Also, which I noticed later, my right calf stopped being tight and I could feel the left calf in a long, long time. The next day I woke up with the tight neck on the left hand side and my scoliosis pain has moved up from T7-T8. I have to say my pain is less when I wear 'orthotics' that way. As soon as I put 'normal' shoes back on, with no support, My right calf got tight back again. Crazy. Thank you Neal. Your vids are treasure.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  Před 4 lety

      I'd assume that you are a complicated case, Thomas. Lots of times people need "above the neck" orthotics (splints/glasses) to get the neck to relax, as well as some sort of shoe orthotic, all in order to ground properly. Sometimes when you do things more piece-meal, you end up playing "whack-a-mole". One thing feels better then the next day something else pops up.

    very interesting! My physio always asks me 'if I can feel my arches' but I always tell him I do not really understand what he means by this. I noticed you said the same thing in your video, so I was wondering if you could explain this a bit. Do you 'feel' the arches just in the sense of being aware of them, or does it mean feel them pressing against something such as the arch insole ( I also have the same insoles as you and wear them in Asics foundation). This could come across as a stupid question but hopefully it makes sense. Thanks for making these videos.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  Před 4 lety +4

      It's a great question, but it's hard to explain.
      I would say it's more of an awareness thing.
      However, you don't know that you aren't feeling something until you finally feel it. And then you think "I wasn't feeling that before". Now you know you weren't feeling it.
      You can't "know something" unless you have something to compare it to. You have to feel something different, particularly between the left side and the right side.
      In PRI, you simply must make people feel differences between the left and right side of the body.
      For instance, most people will feel their weight differently in standing between the left and right foot. So I start with that "exercise" for every single person.
      They have to realize differences exist. Their left and right are NOT operating the same and thus they don't feel their weight in the same spot on both feet (and if they do, I know something is majorly wrong).
      People need to sense left heels, right arches, and right big toes. If they don't they are "lost" (well their brain is, at least). It can make all the difference in the world.

      @@NealHallinan Thanks for taking the time to write a detailed reply. I do think I notice my right big toe a little less, so I might have to try padding that part of the shoe out or something. I always struggle with these things when they ask 'where do you feel it' I find it hard to not over think it, and then I find myself saying, do I actually feel it there.. or not...As you mentioned though, I think it's possible that I have never found that feeling yet so that might be why I struggle to know.

    Is this what I could be looking at? Is this why I pulled to the right with my left eye closed? my scripts are the same since 2016 except this year they changed the contact axis. I havent actually used any contacts this summer because I was working over 80hrs a week and didnt want to stress my eyes so i still have some left over from last year. Last years contacts definitely wont work because thats what i have been wearing for the past month but ill try the newest script with the updated axis this week. TBH these glasses could be 6 years old and I actually see better with them then the contacts. With my contacts if someone calls me at work from far I just see a blur but if I wear glasses Im able to actually see who it is.

    • @NealHallinan

    Question, why is it that most often the right tricep is not that much developed and in some cases lack their full work capability in comparison to the left? I know from experience my ribcage is looking to the left and my left tricep is a lot more developed than my right. Left side is also more retracted than my right due to the ribcage looking to the left. Are you familiar with this right tricep issue? Any thoughts about it?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  Před 4 lety +3

      Yes, because of our difficulty in rotating our torso to the right and bringing our right arm backwards as we walk. In the right BC pattern, our torso "likes" to rotate to the left and we lose the ability to rotate our torso to the right. This has the effect of "disconnecting" the right scapula from the ribcage underneath. A mispositioned right scapula disengages the right tricep and right lower trap. Both are necessary for proper position and function of the scapula. So if you are in the right BC pattern long enough, and are challenged in right torso rotation (which you will be), the right scapula loses its proper position and thus the right tricep and lower trap weaken.
