I saw Hot Tuna at The Academy of Music in NYC in 1973. Both the early and late shows, sun was rising as I left. Great memories, unforgettable experience! Still a huge fan now in 2021! Who else played Woodstock and still tours, nobody else I believe.

I grew up in Passaic, NJ, my home town and I was at this show when I was 15. I saw some amazing shows at the Capitol in Passaic. Hot Tuna was one hell of a band!! I feel sad for the future generations of youngsters and young musicians who will never see bands like this and I'm grateful to have seen this band and the Dead many times at the Capitol Theater in Passaic.
That theater was a classic art deco building, they had xxx porn 4-5 days a week, then big name shows on weekends. I saw the Tuna a few times, Nugent and Skynyrd to name a few.
I wasn't at this particular show but did see Tuna at the Capital along with many other legendary shows in the 70s. I remember seeing the original Mountain there a couple times, those were also some great shows.
I got hooked on Hot Tuna during this period. simply the most impressive, creative, spontaneous, bombastic, unstoppable band ever. Casady, Kaukonen, & Steeler were the best of all the Tuna incarnations.
@Timothy Lee saw Casady and Papa John and Pete Sears and Prarie Prince and more with Kanters Starship in 92 and that was really good but not Hot Tuna. I've seen solo Jorma, Jorma and Jack, Jorma and Michael Falzarano, and list goes on and drummers that I don't recall but in 76 I was still a kid and my music was at the mercy of what adults or older kids played. Some good music from my folks like Cash, old country, Beatles, Motown, Philly, other R&B, Soul and music from other influences. This Hot Tuna could've filled the space that stuff like Judas Priest and other metal filled as this is like Hot and Heavy Tuna and very good too. I wonder if they were still getting/had stashes of the eye droppers at this point? Wish there was a huge discovery of crystal L from the "Bear Research Group " or we discover what the authorities seized was still in evidence but kept properly and however it could slip out of those seizures. Light of this World sounds good too but it is just as amazing on later acoustic in small clubs or cafes.
Nobody jammed better louder or longer than this lineup ofTuna! This will never be done again duplicated or even tried! No one knows how the hell they did this! Frickin incredible!

Im 67 and have recently rediscovered Hot Tuna. Always loved The Water Song, but that was about it. Now I cant get enough of them in 2024. Jorma, Jack and Steeler are am incredible trio. Love Jorma's acoustic guitsr work too. Thank God for CZcams.
Yeah. There are plenty of CZcams issues but they have opened up some fabulous music that most would have never heard. These guys were really good. Like finding a gem just hanging around.

Jorma Kaukonen always had the flair for the traditional blues . Yet when Musician Magazine did their 100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century they included Jorma because of his innovative “acid drenched “ blues he did with Jefferson Airplane . The magazine got it right . Jorma was a major Player in forming that San Francisco sound .
I saw Hot Tuna once in 2006 in France where I live. This was an "acoustic" show of course, but I was so happy to see one of my favorites bands I listened to when I was teen !!! Since I've got an Epiphone "Jack Casady" Bass. Thanks for the share :)

@@brianht1434 The Epiphone Jack Casady is not an acoustic bass, althougt it has a hollow body it's an electric one (you can't uses it unplugged). And he plays it both on electric and acoustic shows.
Jack is the bass master.... I've seen all the best live including Entwistle, Jack Bruce and too many to mention but I Hot Tuna live last night and Jack blows them all away. His tone, melodic style and musical dexterity is second to none
Wow that's really something. I always put Entwistle, Casady, Bruce, Lesh and yes Berry Oakley in the top 5 rock bassists. Have only seen Casady, Lesh, and Bruce live though. Each one is so meritorious and has such outstanding strengths, Lesh's melodiousness, Casady's rhythmic pulse and overtones, Oakley who sadly died so young but who had the chops and was enough of an instrumentalist to play equally with Duane and Dickie without needing to take center stage, Jack Bruce for his utter musicality, force, and raw simplicity, but in the end I come back to Entwistle, I think he was an unhappy man, but in his hands the bass kinda just melted, he exercised absolutely contol of it, he definitely heard a different drummer, and he was able to isolate his line in perfect complement to his bandmates. It appeared so effortless with him it's like he didn't need to think about it. I think in the end he was frustrated and felt locked into the Who's whole stage ritual. I always come back to Lesh as well as a dyed in wool Deadhead what's not to like, plus he held the band together in its most dissolute days, his sense of experimentation, restraint, a certain magic kindled when he performed, plus the exquisite taste and sense of counterpoint. Probably it comes down to what music you really like. It's interesting to hear the Hartbeats recordings from the Matrix in 68 as Jack is performing with Garcia and Hart on some of the Dead current repertoire including Dark Star. Interesting to heat the divergence from how Phil plays those shows. The differences are subtle but discernible and IMO reflect a different approach to "openness", say.

@@jackcrane7853 For sure there are so many great bass players and I have many favorites- Jack Bruce, Alfonzo Johnson, Peter Hook who played much differently than the traditional role and JJ Burnel of the Stranglers has such a cool and particular style. Chris Squire was creative and original. The list could go on and on. I have a wide spectrum of musical tastes and I think it's a cool instrument. I had recently seen Hot Tuna and have always thought that Jack and Jorma have had something very special and Jack doesn't try to play overcomplicated or even overplay but it comes off very good and just cool. While I did like a few things by the Who namely Who's Next and a few bits and pieces Entwistle isn't one of my favorites but he certainly could play. He was a very flamboyant 'rock star' and died the flamboyant rock star death.
Best show I saw was earlier this year in May of 76 at the Beacon. Late show. It was long and so loud the statues on the sides of the stage were shaking. You could feel Jacks bass going right through your body. Before Half Time Saturation Jorma described it as pure noise. Epic Funky #7 and Invitation. Great!

The year was 1987 and me in 11th grade, Most of my contemporaries were listening to Bon Jovi, Poison, Def Leppard and such pop/crap rock, I was digging Jorma and Jack in the Airplane and right here in Hot Tuna, 35 years on it's unwavering.
I've been a Hot Tuna fan since the beginning. I've always liked the sound of Jack's modified Guild Starfire over his Alembic and Flying V. That said, this video still rocks!
I believe the Guild Starfire was the guitar that Jack used for the Crown of Creation session's. It has a nice balanced sound to it. Powerful, but not lacking in overall dynamics.
Love Jack's Flying V Bass. The only band I ever saw that was louder than Motorhead. Then again I had 5th row seats in front of Jorma at the Capitol Theatre in Novenber 1977. He did a pick slide with the flanger on and it sounded like the Concord taking off. Also loved that they played two shows and really played from midnight to 5AM for the late show. Also the only band I ever saw do it. Too young to have seen the Allmans or Dead at the Fillmore.
Oh man, I'd pay big money to see a band like this kicking out this kind of rock. I'm only in the first tune and I'm in Heaven. I'm 66 (2021) and my soul STILL craves this type of rock. Earliest I saw Jorma was ' 82 in Berkley. Never got to see Hot Tuna in the day. What a force! I still love "Easy Now" as one of the best songs Hot Tuna ever did (while living inside Jefferson Airplane). One of my go to tracks for a feel good. Go see them today if you can. Still worth every minute!
Hot Tuna has a great catalogue of acoustic and electric songs. Love Jorma's bluesy voice. It's amazing to see how he uses Steeler's drums, Jacks Bass with his electric guitar compared to what he does on acoustic. Surprisingly tight band considering all the improv.

I saw Jorma solo at the Capital a bunch in the early 80s. He was rocking the post-punk haircut and playing that round body Ovation with the heavy phaser sound. The only solo act to this day that kept me completely engrossed. Wonderful memories.
I saw a performance from "America's choice" at Roundhouse-London in september 1976 during my honeymoon: simply fantastic, at the end we were all mad and deaf. La last song was an electric wonderful version of "Death have no mercy". Thank you Hot Tuna...

I saw a band called Revival, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, and Hot Tuna with John Creech at the Capital Theater in 1971 or maybe 1972, my senior year in college. What a f!##ing concert !!!! I never forgot it and won't as long as my ticker holds out!! Commander Cody took about two or maybe three encores and yet Hot Tuna was better anyway. That must have been one of Jorma and Jacks favorite venues. They appeared there repeatedly and there are 3 at least live recordings on here from that theater.
Saw Hot Tuna few times in upstate NY mid and late 70’s. They were a band for my generation never see another like Tuna. The were loud and played long time. Great memories!!!!!!

How many musicians are there that have done this for 60+ years. I only regret being introduced to them in 1976 what a night, but then again I was in 10th grade. Never a week goes by that I don’t play some Tuna ; just killing time in a crystal city
Awesome but two to three hours shy of a FULL hot tuna concert from this era. Fantastic video . I was at this show, and the one in the Long Island Arena on this tour. Six months after HS graduation.
Just saw them last night at the Paramount Theater. They were a little older and slower and not doing nearly as much "jam band" stuff as Jorma said but it was a great show and the Denver crowd was way into the show with lots of applause and hooting and hollering. All ages in the audience. One guy I talked to said the last time he saw them was 1970.
Bob Steeler was a good enough drummer for Jack n Jorma Christopher Shelly. Sorry to disagree. I went to many of these shows at The Capitol and Beacon 75-77 and my recollection was that this was the shite!!! I miss these days immensely as well as the 125 Grateful Dead shows I saw from 1976-1987…. Christ, where did the time go??? I was 15 at this show, now I'm an old bastard of 54 with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Watching this brings a smile to my face and I am grateful fro the fact that it was posted on CZcams

The real acid rock from frisco...!!! Jorma and Jack the real couple psychedelic blues....They are incredibles....a real concert with improvisations...we don't hear that today.....!!!!
I can confirm that these guys played the loudest, longest, most intense concerts I have ever seen, with the slight exception of Led Zeppelin at MSG (1973). Hot Tuna played at my college, SUNY - Binghamton, May 1975, and the show was legit 4 hours long. I sat (or stood) in 5th row, and my ears rang for days!
I saw them in the summer of 1975 on Long Island. They were at their peak then.....playing a three and a half hour show. My ears rang for a day and a half!! I wonder what ever happened to Jack's Flying V bass???!!!!
Funny story about seeing them for the first time around this time. They were playing at the Tower in Philly and I was a little late getting tix. But I was able to get 2nd row seats. I was surprised. At the show I realized why the seats were available. They played sooooooo loud it was overwhelming.

I've heard all the "jam bands", Cream, the Dead, Skynyrd, the Allman's. All were great but this period of Tuna was supreme. The best of them all!

I saw Hot Tuna once in 2006 in France where I live. This was an "acoustic" show of course, but I was so happy to see one of my favorites bands I listened to when I was teen !!! Since I've got an Epiphone "Jack Casady" Bass. Thanks for the share :)

The Band has Done some electric trio sets in the past year. The Saturday night show at the Beacon in NYC was astounding. For the second set they brought out some guests and did a Jefferson Airplane set.

Jack can't play his thunder on an acoustic bass. Much prefer when he plays an electric instrument, his talent is much more obvious!
@@brianht1434 The Epiphone Jack Casady is not an acoustic bass, althougt it has a hollow body it's an electric one (you can't uses it unplugged). And he plays it both on electric and acoustic shows.
Jack is the bass master.... I've seen all the best live including Entwistle, Jack Bruce and too many to mention but I Hot Tuna live last night and Jack blows them all away. His tone, melodic style and musical dexterity is second to none
Wow that's really something. I always put Entwistle, Casady, Bruce, Lesh and yes Berry Oakley in the top 5 rock bassists. Have only seen Casady, Lesh, and Bruce live though. Each one is so meritorious and has such outstanding strengths, Lesh's melodiousness, Casady's rhythmic pulse and overtones, Oakley who sadly died so young but who had the chops and was enough of an instrumentalist to play equally with Duane and Dickie without needing to take center stage, Jack Bruce for his utter musicality, force, and raw simplicity, but in the end I come back to Entwistle, I think he was an unhappy man, but in his hands the bass kinda just melted, he exercised absolutely contol of it, he definitely heard a different drummer, and he was able to isolate his line in perfect complement to his bandmates. It appeared so effortless with him it's like he didn't need to think about it. I think in the end he was frustrated and felt locked into the Who's whole stage ritual.
I always come back to Lesh as well as a dyed in wool Deadhead what's not to like, plus he held the band together in its most dissolute days, his sense of experimentation, restraint, a certain magic kindled when he performed, plus the exquisite taste and sense of counterpoint.
Probably it comes down to what music you really like. It's interesting to hear the Hartbeats recordings from the Matrix in 68 as Jack is performing with Garcia and Hart on some of the Dead current repertoire including Dark Star. Interesting to heat the divergence from how Phil plays those shows. The differences are subtle but discernible and IMO reflect a different approach to "openness", say.

@@jackcrane7853 For sure there are so many great bass players and I have many favorites- Jack Bruce, Alfonzo Johnson, Peter Hook who played much differently than the traditional role and JJ Burnel of the Stranglers has such a cool and particular style. Chris Squire was creative and original. The list could go on and on. I have a wide spectrum of musical tastes and I think it's a cool instrument. I had recently seen Hot Tuna and have always thought that Jack and Jorma have had something very special and Jack doesn't try to play overcomplicated or even overplay but it comes off very good and just cool. While I did like a few things by the Who namely Who's Next and a few bits and pieces Entwistle isn't one of my favorites but he certainly could play. He was a very flamboyant 'rock star' and died the flamboyant rock star death.
Perhaps the most unconventional band ever. Hot Tuna is pure brilliance

Best show I saw was earlier this year in May of 76 at the Beacon. Late show. It was long and so loud the statues on the sides of the stage were shaking. You could feel Jacks bass going right through your body. Before Half Time Saturation Jorma described it as pure noise. Epic Funky #7 and Invitation. Great!
IMAGINE ,,WHAT a great drummer BOB STEELER WAS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,being able to play continuously for almost 8 hrs,,per show,,,,,(EARLY AND LATE),,,,,,,,and to be able to keep up with the fast playing of JACK and JORMA
The year was 1987 and me in 11th grade, Most of my contemporaries were listening to Bon Jovi, Poison, Def Leppard and such pop/crap rock, I was digging Jorma and Jack in the Airplane and right here in Hot Tuna, 35 years on it's unwavering.
i saw a few of these shows "back in the day" Man i left the shows exhausted always admired the fact they could rock that hard for hours....
I was there for that show, and many others at the great Capitol Theater. What a place it was to see a concert! Those were great times!

I've been a Hot Tuna fan since the beginning. I've always liked the sound of Jack's modified Guild Starfire over his Alembic and Flying V. That said, this video still rocks!
I believe the Guild Starfire was the guitar that Jack used for the Crown of Creation session's. It has a nice balanced sound to it. Powerful, but not lacking in overall dynamics.

Love Jack's Flying V Bass. The only band I ever saw that was louder than Motorhead. Then again I had 5th row seats in front of Jorma at the Capitol Theatre in Novenber 1977. He did a pick slide with the flanger on and it sounded like the Concord taking off. Also loved that they played two shows and really played from midnight to 5AM for the late show. Also the only band I ever saw do it. Too young to have seen the Allmans or Dead at the Fillmore.
Fantastic! Bob Steeler was perfect, just funky enough to be great to play behind that kit for 2 shows a night with about 8 hours of non stop drumming.
Oh man, I'd pay big money to see a band like this kicking out this kind of rock. I'm only in the first tune and I'm in Heaven. I'm 66 (2021) and my soul STILL craves this type of rock. Earliest I saw Jorma was ' 82 in Berkley. Never got to see Hot Tuna in the day. What a force! I still love "Easy Now" as one of the best songs Hot Tuna ever did (while living inside Jefferson Airplane). One of my go to tracks for a feel good. Go see them today if you can. Still worth every minute!

Hot Tuna has a great catalogue of acoustic and electric songs. Love Jorma's bluesy voice. It's amazing to see how he uses Steeler's drums, Jacks Bass with his electric guitar compared to what he does on acoustic. Surprisingly tight band considering all the improv.

I saw Jorma solo at the Capital a bunch in the early 80s. He was rocking the post-punk haircut and playing that round body Ovation with the heavy phaser sound. The only solo act to this day that kept me completely engrossed. Wonderful memories.
I saw a performance from "America's choice" at Roundhouse-London in september 1976 during my honeymoon: simply fantastic, at the end we were all mad and deaf. La last song was an electric wonderful version of "Death have no mercy". Thank you Hot Tuna...

I saw a band called Revival, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, and Hot Tuna with John Creech at the Capital Theater in 1971 or maybe 1972, my senior year in college. What a f!##ing concert !!!! I never forgot it and won't as long as my ticker holds out!! Commander Cody took about two or maybe three encores and yet Hot Tuna was better anyway. That must have been one of Jorma and Jacks favorite venues. They appeared there repeatedly and there are 3 at least live recordings on here from that theater.

Electric band is playing my festival tomorrow night in the Tetons!
Just saw them last night at the Paramount Theater. They were a little older and slower and not doing nearly as much "jam band" stuff as Jorma said but it was a great show and the Denver crowd was way into the show with lots of applause and hooting and hollering. All ages in the audience. One guy I talked to said the last time he saw them was 1970.
Bob Steeler was a good enough drummer for Jack n Jorma Christopher Shelly. Sorry to disagree. I went to many of these shows at The Capitol and Beacon 75-77 and my recollection was that this was the shite!!! I miss these days immensely as well as the 125 Grateful Dead shows I saw from 1976-1987…. Christ, where did the time go???

I can confirm that these guys played the loudest, longest, most intense concerts I have ever seen, with the slight exception of Led Zeppelin at MSG (1973). Hot Tuna played at my college, SUNY - Binghamton, May 1975, and the show was legit 4 hours long. I sat (or stood) in 5th row, and my ears rang for days!

Funny story about seeing them for the first time around this time. They were playing at the Tower in Philly and I was a little late getting tix. But I was able to get 2nd row seats. I was surprised. At the show I realized why the seats were available. They played sooooooo loud it was overwhelming.
This is so electric and tripped out. Saw them once at the old Palladium in NY, must have been 1980 or '81. I was a city kid but all the suburban heads were there.
This show was very much like the Warner Theater, DC 1977 I went to. I miss that time period.
I've seen them at the Konserthuset, Stockholm that same year, I think… I remember my friend Andrés saying - while Jorma was fingerpicking with one of his Stratocasters -, "it seems that he's milkcowin' his guitar",...
