Was Roger's girlfriend to dress up...John the bassist wrote the song about women's rights...The visual is a parady of a British soap opera called Coronation street...Freddie was a rock god who loved opera and ballet,,,he was once asked to join the National British in a fundraiser...he asked them to join Queen in this video to do a real ballet number
This was basically a parody of a long running soap opera based in the north of England called 'Coronation Street' - Freddie was going to shave off his moustache but he director told him to keep it as it would be funnier
And he shaved it for the ballet part...lol
It's actually written by John Deacon about oppression, many think it's about Freddie, but they forget all four of the group wrote the songs, and dressing up in drag was Roger Taylor then girlfriend's idea, again nothing too do with Freddie

I've always loved the part when a piece of the wig gets stuck on Freddie's lipstick. The costumes in the fantasy dance troupe sequence look as though they were inspired by the famous ballet, "L'Après-midi d'un Faune" ("Afternoon of a Faun) from the 1910s. A fun and visually interesting video.

The "underground fantasy" part of the video was based on a famous ballet (that I can never remember the name of, but somebody else will know). The people with Freddie were ballet dancers from the London Royal Ballet... Back in 1979, Fred had done a charity performance with their ballet company, and had been friends with them since then. Freddie adored ballet and opera.

Queen released this single in 1984 from 'The Works' album... Coming off the poorly-received pop album 'Hot space' in 1981, Queen took a break... Freddie worked on a solo album (which would be released in 1985). When Queen got back together, they delivered a more focused album, and 'The Works' became a hit worldwide... but in the USA, where Queen's popularity was already in decline in '81, the album failed to go gold (half million copies) after the music video for "I want to break free" was banned by MTV America.
There were rumors that Freddie Mercury was gay, and this was Pres. Reagan's era just before the AIDS crisis when people thought it was a gay disease (or refused to believe it was real)... So, Queen dressed in drag was not acceptable in '84 and as a result, Queen was ignored in N. America and did not tour there... The hypocrisy was that in 1984, Ratt scored a huge MTV single 'Round & round' w/ actor Milton Berle appearing in drag on the music video.

Can you believe American television banned this video when it was released just because the guys were dressed in drag? British humor has pretty much always took men dressing as women tongue and cheek. Great comic troupes did this all the time to the delight of audiences. Examples: Monty Python Flying Circus guys, Benny Hill, The Goodies, etc…

It wasn't banned on American television. MTV received complaints and stopped playing it. Men dressing as women has a long history on US TV. Just look up Flip Wilson, Milton Berle, and of course RuPaul.

little factoid for you. this video was band in America when it came out, also the "rocks" were the Royal Ballet Company.
If you haven't already, you really should check out their performance of "I'm In Love With My Car". It was written by Queen's drummer, Roger Taylor, and he takes the lead on the vocals on this one. He's got just as amazing of a voice as Mercury. The version in particular that you should check out though is from their Montreal concert in 1981 --> "Killer Queen/I'm In Love With My Car".

The reason why the vid is so "artsy" is that Freddie was a huge fan of the opera, that is where that comes from. There are quite a number of vids you still need to do, Killer Queen, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Fat Bottom Girls, Bicycle Race, Stone Cold Crazy, These Are The Days Of Our Lives, and their final music video The Show Must Go On.

There was such homophobic backlash to this video in the US that Queen never toured here again after the Hot Space tour. The video is a spoof of a popular British sitcom, not a statement about sexuality. The concept for the video wasn't even Freddies'. One of the other band members suggested it.
Soap opera (or serial drama as they want us to call it now), not sitcom. Although, compared to EastEnders, it's as funny as Naked Gun.
