I hope Holly's first owner is watching your channel so she can see how gloriously happy she is now!!!
When watching the video that’s exactly what I was thinking🙂. I’m most sure she’s watching, I would be😌. If she’s reading this I’d like her to know how respected she is for doing the best for Holly and she can rest knowing Holly’s right where she was intended to be☺️. She will be a part of Holly forever. God bless you ma’am🙏🏻❤️.
Love and prayers from Alaska🐻
Maybe in future, leave the hay on til early spring?
I'm so sorry for the loss of so many of your vegetables, but thank God it wasn't the animals! 💕
Perfectly said.
Holly is such a happy girl! She looks like she was always meant to be there.. and knows she found home! 💗💕🥰
I have so much respect for you Jason. The way you handle such loss and destruction of your crops is to be admired. You have such emotional maturity I admire your positive attitude. You look on the bright side of life rather than letting it ruin your life and others around you. Thank you for showing us how to behave. ♥️
I so agree with you.
I totally agree with what you said too. I need to take lessons from Jason on how to be such a positive, calm personality. I wanna be like that LOL
Imagine Holly in an apartment all day or even a traditional, fenced backyard. Yes, she is "an active dog breed" but in your farm space with plenty of room to run, she does; and does it without having to be worked/ trained. I'm going to guess Holly sleeps pretty darned well.
I love watching Holly!
And I hope her previous owner takes comfort from her decision. And hope she can heal.
I like to think she enjoys Holly just like we do, every day!
Same. I think about her every time I see Holly. She did the right thing, even though I'm sure it was/is hard.
Plus she can keep up with her through Jason’s videos
On Your garden you might give them a couple days to see if they will send up new leaves.
But next time, put the hay or blankets down then plastic over. The plastic will hold the frost off of the hay and plants and the hay will keep them warm. I live in Colorado and this is what I do to save plants.
Holly is like your shadow. A place like yours is exactly what she needs. She's a good dog.
Your resilient laughter is what makes going through such a disheartening event seem less devastating, at least for those watching. God bless the Cog Squad. Holly loves her slip and slide!
Leave the frostbit greens for a while because they protect the new groth.
Yes, I read that you shouldn't trim the bad leaves off yet because they may start to come back and they provide cover for the undergrowth.
In this area, we will sometimes get some pretty cold snaps and if the Swiss chard is mature, thier root system will go pretty deep if there is room. From those roots, they will send up new shoots around the crown or Central core. The first time the entire row was a mess of slimey leaves post cold snap which we walked away from for a couple of weeks until the weather became more human hospitable; low and behold new leaves were coming up out of the darkness. Once the new leaves actually start to look viable, we are quick to remove any decaying matter. That experience taught us to wait and see what, if anything, comes up. More often than not, things come back to life.
Remember, most of our greens began as weeds some place or another abiut the world. Weeds often have mechanisms to bounce back from what nature throws them.
I think they may come back from root
That's what my Pop Pop always said. Maybe..
I knew people would be helpful. That's great! A lot of things here in Florida look doomed, like my lemon tree, but so many things do come back when the frost takes the leaves. 🤞
Sorry the crops weren't able to withstand the awful weather. It's amazing to watch Holly, and know she's such a new addition. Acts like she was born on the farm. Happy New Year to all. 🌞
God bless you big. So sorry for your loss
Jason, 2 things: over here in the Netherlands we us a combination of lots off mulch preferably from woodchips and leaf litter. Over this you can spread open woven frost cloth, because this can loose moisture (as plastics can’t do)
And the other with your new chickens: put a old experienced hen or two in this floc to show them the way to the field below.
Yes I totally agree. I'm thinking it might have been a shock to the plants to remove the mulch and expose them to the full sun. I've had that happen when I took off the plastic low tunnels in the spring.
Holly is so adorable, beautiful and smart😅
I love hearing you laugh, and Holly sure makes you laugh. She is so happy.
I am soooo glad you guys weren’t in the camper this winter…🥶
It is heartbreaking to see the damage to your garden. I am surprised the broccoli didn't survive. That is one of the last things that gets frosted here. Holly is such a happy girl. I am glad you made her part of your family.
Watching Holly romp and frolic brings me such joy!!
I love Holly!😊❤ She is definitely your loyal companion, Jason.
Next time it gets really cold maybe the hay and greenhouse plastic on the ground would help the plants. It may be harder to maintain the long rows in the winter compared to the summer, I see more ppl use raised beds and more quadrants/ rectangle shaped beds in the winter so they can use frost cloth. Most will grow back from the root even stronger !! Probably going to be a yo-yo winter with some more severe cold fronts.
I am so sorry about your garden but watching Holly running on the plastic is a joy, what a happy dog!
Holly is a playful and very affectionate puppy just spreading the love all over Cog Hill Farm. I am glad you guys had the freeze-dried greens to add to the corn bread and black-eyed peas! My Mom used to always serve black-eyed peas on New Years. Enjoyed watching Holly run around with such playful energy!!
Same here. We HAVE to have black-eyed peas on New Years Day. We have to eat at least one pea, for Good Luck.
I've not eaten black eyed peas in years. Can't stand them!
Little Holly is just the best! A very happy young dog!❤ I’m hoping your garden makes at least a partial comeback. That cold hit us in Texas too.
SE Oklahoma got it bad as well.
All of your leafy plants should bounce back as long as the root was not affected. I live in NY so I am familiar with very cold temps. I have had onions make it thru the winter and flourish the following season. The temps you had are the same as most of our winter season. If you haven’t pulled the veggies yet I would leave them for a while to see if they bounce back. Don’t rush it. I have had grape vines I thought where dead and there was growth under the ground. So don’t rush it. Let Mother Nature work her wonders.
I don’t know Alabama, but Ohio weather gets extremely cold. I’m looking at those greens thinking that most will come back, given a little time. Of course, the yellow leaves are gone, but the ground didn’t completely freeze, so the roots will put out new leaves, given time.

I agree 100%.
Thank you for sharing, Jason. And thank you all commenters, you help us all learn about what to do and try to salvage a harvest.
Sorry about the loss of your beloved garden. All the animals look great! Holly is beautiful, she's sure a lucky girl. ❤ Thanks for sharing. Take care and have a great day folks! 🐈⬛
I took a huge loss but grateful that some stuff survived 🙏 😎🌿
Amen
@@CogHillFarm just till it under for organic matter for fertilizer then put down your cover crop
I’m hoping that the severe cold weather has killed off some of the insects we’ve been experiencing!♥️🙏🏻
Amen
Holly spreads JOY all over the farm, and its so plentiful it just pours out on us.....Thanks Holly, you make me SMILE
Jason my grandparents were farmers so I am in touch with loss through them. I do keep you and your family in my prayers. Thank goodness for Holly doing Zoomies in the background. She loves you so. And she makes us smile.
Jason, I feel for you in your garden loss. My dad was a farmer and dealt with hail storms on the wheat fields. Holly loves you.
Silly energetic Holly.... Lovin that FLUFFY PUP❤️
So glad you have the sweet Holly to help you through this disappointment. She is a love!
Good morning Cog Hill and all of the Cog Squad. Jason leave the garden for a couple of days and see if anything comes back from the roots. Nature has a way of surprising us. So glad that all of the animals are safe and happy. Happy New Year to y’all. Brooke the greens look so good. Glad that you were able to freeze dry the ones you harvested. Y’all be good.
I agree with you. I think once that beautiful sunshine hits those plants again, good things will happen
I gave my niece a green stalk for her birthday that is today. Can’t wait to see what all she plants in it.
I am sorry about your garden. I am very glad Holly brings such joy to you. She certainly is living her best life. Blessings from Proctor Minnesota!
Hey Cog squad so sorry that your crop was ruined by the bad weather you had recently. Now you know you can freeze dry or dehydrate forget which you did and have them all year. Such a must for the homestead to be self sufficient. Holly is such a fun loyal dog and great company when you do your chores so much energy and just wants to help. Like she has always been at cog hill. Take care God Bless 💕🙏
You guys are a blessing, Thank you for your videos they are so enjoyable.
So much to be grateful for! Moving forward with your beautiful, healthy, happy family and pets! You're an awesome person Jason with the best attitude! Another planting season ahead.
So sad. Your garden was absolutely beautiful before the cold whether. Hopefully some of the plants will come back. If not, with your positive attitude and personality you’ll replant and have another beautiful garden!
Holly was meant to be on Cog Hill Farm. She certainly adjusted to her new home like she has been there right along!
I can't believe they still don't have your stair rail up. Your house looks so nice inside.
Yes, it’s absolutely gorgeous!!!! I’m beyond impressed with how elegantly rustic it is🌻. All of y’all’s hard work and loving effort can be seen in every inch your home.
You deserve it. I’m excited to see you begin your barn😁soon. God. Bless all y’all 🙏🏻. Your in my prayers, I will pray God willing you can salvage some if not all of your garden🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻.
Love and laughter always from Alaska ❄️❤️❄️❤️❄️❤️❄️
I live in Plant City, FL, winter strawberry capital, when it turns 32, the fields turn on the sprinklers to put a coat of ice. This works for the new spring crops also. Very little loss because they froze things at 32. Might research and it may help for future. Love your channel btw
Same for cranberries here in Massachusetts .
I think the cold makes the berries sweeter. I went to Keel and Curley a couple of weeks ago and some of the strawberry fields were open for picking.
It works!
So sorry for the crop loss, thank goodness you have Holly to keep you smiling. I like the idea of a cover crop until spring 🙏🙏😊
Maybe some of the roots can be salvaged if you could cut them all the way back, and save which leaves you can(?) Holly was such a blessing today!
I lost about everything in the garden but after a week of leaving them alone, the onions, garlic and carrots are coming back. The broccoli is sending up new leaves, so maybe? I didn't even cover the garden. You might want to start some bigger pots in the greenhouse and you can get more food before spring. ❤️ Texas Deb 😁
Holly is just having such a good time! She makes my heart sing.
I can tell Holly adores you!❤
So very sorry for your loss Jason. I know how very hard you’ve worked!! You did have so much enjoyment laying it all out!. Keep smiling always!! This will pass and one day you and Brooke will be able to remember it as a past peril but by then you’ll have so many successes under your belt you’ll smile as you reminisce!❤
So I tried a few different ways to save my garden from the freeze. I covered some with hay, I covered some with pots I covered some with bed sheets (moms way) and I watered while the temps dropped and they only things that made it where the things I covered with water and the water froze about 1/2 inch. My friends grandpa told me to do the ice way I was very worried but it worked great. I cut all the bad leaves away and now things are recovering great.
I know nothing about creating a garden...but I watched with admiration as you worked so hard on yours! I'm so sorry for your loss, but now watch with admiration as you look around to appreciate the blessings left...like your beautiful new BFF, Holly!! Prayers to you Jason, we all know you'll "pick yourself up by your bootstraps" and plant anew! Love you, your beautiful fam, and all your happy animals!! 💖💖💖🙏🙏🙏
….being a farmer. You hope, you pray, and you deal with the results. Then you start over again! Sure sorry things went downhill, but still lots to be grateful for!!
My garden here in NC, zone 7b, was demolished. Looking forward to the spring plantings.
I love Holly so much! She is the perfect Cog Hill farm dog/Jason’s shadow!
Living in the desert, I've gotten pretty used to plants looking like they're gone then reviving so agree with others to wait and see. Give it a chance as a learning experience if nothing else, and very helpful in selecting plants to grow in a time when it IS critical to have all survive-might be helpful to know that certain plants will come back after deep distress given longer- than- you- expect time.
I really do feel for you after all your hard work, seeing things ruined. However Holly running round with all the joys of young life is wonderful. Onward and upward you will grow an even better crop this year.
So sorry about the garden. Holly is having a BIG time, and fitting right in to you and your family. That's awesome! Love y'all! Happy New Year!
You're not alone in the garden area. So many list a lot all over. May we appreciate what we do harvest and count our blessings. Your attitude is awesome!
❤ Holly is living her best life. ❤
Looking forward to seeing y’all at Petals From the Past in April!
Good Morning Cog Hill and Cog Squad!!! I hope everything is ok today!!!
So sorry guys all you can do is be thankful for what you saved, and replant, hopefully this crazy weather won’t happen again, it’s a huge disappointment but your amazing and you will be ok don’t be sad it could always be worse love your family
That garden provided a lot of joy not to mention good eating. But alas, the greater the joy the tougher the loss! 😢But you still have onions, garlic and Holly. Not to mention all the loving people and good things in your life! And you have the Cog Squad waiting with bated breath for the next episode of Cog Hill Farm! LOL 🇨🇦⛄️⛄️
Sorry for the loss of your crops Jason, but like you said no water frozen, no animal loss, and the greens you have are awesome. and Holly just loves you and her new family. God Bless and stay safe, and have a Blessed New Year.
Holly on that tarp is everything! She’s a joy.
Holly is adorable she’s so happy and funny.
Jason, so sorry about the garden. Holly is just what the Dr ordered, there is nothing like a a good dog to put a smile on your face. It's hard for me to believe how much love there is in my heart for my fur baby. God bless y'all. Love and prayers.
I’m so sorry about your garden. I agree that the most important things are that all the babies are ok and no damage was done to the pipes. I’m so glad you had your beautiful home to stay cozy and warm in because I’d imagine the camper would have been quite chilly, even with your little heaters. Oh, and I’m so enjoying Holly. She is beautiful and I love the way she follows you around. I do miss Arlo out running around too, but Holly is a perfect addition to the family. Happy New Year to you all!
I personally wouldn’t trim the dead off it will work as insulation for the next cold snap. I put all my potted plants in my Greenhouse they all pulled through with the lights and heater running. Everything I had planted I covered but lost them all. I’ll trim back about mid March fertilize and regrow. Using plastic or tarps is a bad thing both hold moisture which when it’s cold means ice and death. Use blankets sheets cloth of some kind. Holly is loving Cog Hill life!!!😂❤
It was rotting and that’s why I cut it off👍❤️
Sorry about the garden! So glad Holly is there to brightened your day! 🌻🌸🦆🦚🐓🦢🐖🦮🐐🐈⬛🦃🐄🤗💕
Holly is so happy! I love watching her run around. Lol! So sorry your garden didn't survive the cold.
Yup,I would definitely say that Holly is Loving her new life on Cog Hill Farm. Happy New Year to you and the Fur Babies of Cog Hill Farm. I hope you have an amazing and prosperous 2023.
I can feel that disappointment and frustration from losing a full batch of vegetables that you worked so hard for. I'm just glad everyone is safe from this storm. This will help you better prepare for the next winter... I'm sure you got this! Have a wonderful and healthy New Year to you and your whole family 💕
Holly couldn’t be more darling if she tried. She fits right in w all the other darlings on the farm. ❤
Holly is having the best time. ❤️
Jason ,so sorry for the winter garden ,I don't think that I have ever seen you so sad .....But then that smile came back !!!! You never give up !!!!!Always upbeat and good attitude!!!!! Holly is wonderful and gives you much happiness!!!!Happy New Year ,Cog Hill Farm !!!!!
It will get better, before you know it !!!🙂
I so love watching Holly, she eases the pain in my heart after losing my old Aussie girl this past summer. She will be a great farm dog and companion. Don't feel to bad Jason I lost all my greens too in Ga down to 9 degrees, even the carrots and collards.
Oh Jason, SO sorry about your garden. 😔 You worked SO hard. But that Holly girl of yours sure loves life!! 🤩 ❤️
Holly is definitely living her best life..! ❤
I’m so sorry about your garden loss but love your attitude going forward.
Also I LOVE seeing Holly running around in the background of your videos. ❤️
Don’t look at what you lost. Look at what you still have after all that freeze. Being thankful for such good weather reports to be able to prepare for what we had.
In the thumbnail, Holly’s expression. She is precious
Oh, Jason I’m so sorry, I know how hard you worked on the garden, lots of back breaking work. Praying for a better year.🙏❤️
We used leftover plastic from our growers solution for our tillage radish rows (one area with rutabaga, red beets, and kohlrabi also) and I think they grew faster! It got down to 9F here. We were happily surprised it worked so well!
I love watching Holly run and play. She was such a great addition to Cog Hill Farm.
I'm so sorry Jason that all your hard work has been lost. You certainly have a good attitude about it. I love watching Holly run around. She's adorable❤❤
If your garden made it, we want a dance!!!
I’m sorry about your garden Jason. You worked so hard to put it In and then tried to save it. 😢 It was a terrible cold front. Let’s count our blessings and recover. Holly loves being on your farm. She’s fun to watch. Happy New Year. She makes you smile🥰
Holly has added a lot to your videos, they are always good but, she is a joy to see, I think she is the perfect dog for you. Brooke has the perfect instinct for choosing the right animals.
Just love watching Holly play and said to myself I wish I had 1/4 of her energy!! She is a beautiful dog!! I know you all are proud to have her!! So sorry about your crops! At least you did save quiet a bit before the freeze hit. Much love to you all.
Jason, keep in mind that if you use plant pots turned upside down over plants as insulation, warm air rises. The warm air escapes out the holes that are (when upside down) at the top of the pots. You'll need to wrap those pots with plastic or tape over the holes to have any real hope of making them effective.
Sorry about the frost damage. Pretty much the same here in north Texas. I feel your pain. Good news is we have ample time to replant for a decent harvest. Hang in there!
You just can't help but laugh at Holly running in sheer joy across those tarps! She's a true blessing isn't she?
This is a very different year so can’t gage from this one but sure can learn a lot! Give them some time. The thing is you tried!❤
Holly is living her best life. I watched y’all when you planted your garden and feel so sorry for all the hard work that y’all put into it. Sending hugs from China Spring Texas
Watching Holly run around as you were going through the garden losses was absolutely heartwarming. She was loving every second running around and she sure is living her best life!
Good morning CogHill and CogSquad 😊
Morning!
Holly adjusted to her new home great!
I hate putting a like on videos that are such bad news. I am so sorry about your garden. Such a horrible loss. Best of luck for what ever you decide to do next! God Bless ya all!
Good morning Cog Hill Smith Family. The good Lord moves in mysterious ways. He brought you Holly to Brighten your spirits while walking through your frost bit garden.❤❤❤❤
You should plant some dandelions. There is a lot you can do with them. Eat the greens. Make jelly with the blossoms. Tea with the roots.
Storms like this one help make sure we understand that life is good no matter what happens.
I am so glad you and Holly have found each other. She appears to be thriving and you've got a running buddy. That's a real good thing. I love seeing her enjoy her new life.
Yes, I hope Holly's previous owner watches and is comforted knowing she's well cared for and happy.
