    I say the best Harleys are the older ones. Late 1980's evos up to the last Twin Cam 103. Just tastefully customize, and you will have to do some mods to the motor if you want some good power. The look is classic, more timeless. Harley I think their hey day is over, their glory days. When the Evo came out those were some of the best years because the motor company was trying to build a good reputation after the dark days of the shovelhead. I know the newer M8 motors have the potential for alot more power. But the bikes don't look or sound as good IMO. You can only go so fast anyway so. I mean I believe if you realy want to go fast have two different bikes, one for like the dragstrip, and another alot more mild for cruising, going on trips.

      I could not have said this any better. The older Harleys are going to become more prized possessions as the years roll by not only for their looks and performance but for the way they sound.
      Off the charts HP ratings are great for bragging rights and maybe brief euphoric spurts of speed but in the end impractical and overrated. I've been there done that with other bikes in my past that I've owned.
      I am now more than content with holding onto my 2003 Road King Classic for the way it handles and performs after the Screaming Eagle upgrade and the sublime engine sound is pure nostalgia.

      @@El_Peto The Factory's response at the time was shameful, they shoulda done a recall on those TC88 tensioners. Now though, the issues are well understood. Recently I was able to get a pristine and relatively low miles (30,000) 2001 Road King for USD 9000. After having a HD dealer's Service Dept fit the SE hydraulic tensioner kit with oil pump upgrade included, and changing the "prematurely worn" cams for an as-new stock cams set that a mate had immediately changed out from his Dyna way back in 2003 and still had tucked away in a drawer at home, I've now got a total of USD 12,000 in it. Only 0.001 of crank runout, coz it has the Timken bottom end. This bike will now well outlast me, as a durable and reliable tourer and fun weekend bike. Why buy a new Harley?

    • @25chief39
      @25chief39 Před 6 měsíci

      @@GixxerFoo At 30,000 miles both tensioners were just starting to have chunks of yellow tensioner material coming out of the chain rubbing faces. About a dozen chunks, each about half the size of a match head. The rear tensioner was worse affected than the front one. Total breakup was beginning. I headed off this problem just in the nick of time. My HD dealer Service Dept did a total timing chest rebuild with Screamin Eagle hydraulic kit (includes new oil pump), new cams, new lifters, and changed all bearings, for USD 3,000 including new rear tire. Purchase price of bike 2nd hand in 2017 was USD 8,400. So I now have USD 11,400 in it (this is in New Zealand - was I ripped off, compared to USA?), and can expect it to last until 60,000 miles or more with no further issues now that I've fixed the Factory's main f%@&-up with the TC88s that they should have done a recall on.

    The pricing is still too high, but it is a step in the right direction. The 2023 SGS/RGS started at $31,000 because it's MSRP + RDRS + Surcharge + Freight. When you add tax, title, reg, and dealer fees, that's easily $34,000+. Now it's closer to $29k if you want the same blacked out bike, so maybe around $31,500 for the newer ones. While you get far more bang for your buck, that's still a huge chunk of change. It's a pity that they don't have a touring model like the EGS, without all the fancy electronics. The old school crowd has misgivings about the new bikes, especially in the engine department. Many like the simplicity of a Shovelhead or Evo, but the new bikes combine a modernized classic look with the latest engineering; I personally like VVT and the twin cooled heads -heat is always the enemy of HD engines. Some will like and some will dislike, but the world marches onward. Personally, my M8 has plenty of life and will probably outlive me, but if the chance came to get a new one, a new Ultra Limited would find a place in my garage!

    Please explain, the relationship of torque, horse power and miles per hour , when putting a kit in a bike

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 6 měsíci

      The short answer is horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how hard you hit the wall. In MPH terms torque is what pulls you up the dyno chart and when torque falls off the horsepower takes over and keeps your speed climbing.

      Thx much Sir , hopefully you can do a program on this topic
      Sorry but, if your bike stops pulling at 100 mph ( track speed) what kit increase " top end "mph . Note I can wait until you can do a show about this.
      Thx again TEX ( ATL)

    Not so crazy about the new Street Glide faring but the Road Glide looks AWESOME I want one soooo bad! But at the same time this should drop the price of used 114 models. 🤞

      I am Road Glide fan so I can't say too much, but you caught my thought on that 114. I might just be able to swing one if it drops that price enough.

    What's the point of more power if computer is regulated to 100 mph?

    • @davidwall6455

      Right ! the the 114 will cruise right by the 117 at 100mph . I’ll stick with the 114

    They do have variable valve timing on 117

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 6 měsíci +1

      The new bikes with the 117 have the same cam cover but they don't have the VVT system, that's only on the 121 engine right now. I am predicting it will come in the next few years cause it does increase the horsepower and torque, not to mention economy so expect a price increase on the RG and SG going forward soon in the return of the Special.

    I’d for sure get one of the new baggers. But my local dealership has like 40 of the 2023s in stock, so I’m going to see what those prices are when they can’t give them away in 6 months. I don’t mind the 114 or standard 107. Both are faster than my 80evo in my FXRS. Plus, I kind of prefer the analog gauges of the current glides.

    Call me old....cuz I am!! But how much is enough? The lower price doesn't lure me. I'm not a fan of all the electronic stuff, the screen, ride modes, and such. A cheap Garmin, a phone mount, a Sena w/ quality helmet speakers,....and I'm good. I ride a '21 RK Standard. Black and chrome!.. Glad I bought one that still looks traditional. The twin cooled might be something necessary for the bigger displacement, but I found investing in the fan that fits behind the oil cooler keeps my 107" well below worrisome temps, even on hot days in traffic. I was stoked about the new ones for years, always exciting. Not so much anymore. But having said that, I hope they sell a gob of 'em!!

      I feel the same too, we just get to point where it's how much power are we really gonna use. Instead of an insane motor you can spend just as much on suspension and honestly you'll get more enjoyment out of that. Suspension is so overlooked and under appreciated.

  • @ncf11

    You can only go so fast and be practical on the road and twisties. Chasing torque and HP is fine if that’s what one chooses. HD should concentrate on details and improving the product. ie Newer Heritage bags are too small and leak. And what focus group said buyers today want those silly stud type markings on the seat and bags. Most don’t. And the brakes aren’t Brembo or that good to stop 728 lbs.

    The dumb thing is the twin cooled bikes ran hotter. (At least the old models) and now the oil cooler is gone on the way of a radiator.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  Před 6 měsíci

      The original twin cooled twin cam did run hot, it wasn't much difference other than what you felt as the rider heat wise. They are slowly easing the buyers into full water cooling in the coming years.

    I traded my high mileage 2005 Twin Cam in for a first year M8 in late 2016. I usually don't buy a first year anything but I took a chance and have been very lucky. They haven't worked all the bugs out of that Skyline OS yet and I snuck by paying for the dealer mark-up nonsense last time, so I'm good for a few more years. Maybe this body style will grow on me by then.
