Titan Generator - Will Not Start

- Got a good deal on this Titan Industries Generator. The person selling is disclosed that it will only run on starting fluid. Noticed that the oil sensor is unplugged. Not sure if this is an issue with the carburetor or the low oil system. Lets find out.

After watching about 8 of your videos I had the confidence and ambition to tackle our broken generator. When I opened it up I was surprised to find it was brushless, got the multimeter out done some tests, I think the capacitors are dead, if I’m right it’s a £6 fix!

@@Kroooza in the end it turned out that internally the stator was all heated warped and bent. I struggled to find the parts if I remember rightly because of its age. So I bought a 16KVA diesel stephill silent generator. More manly to do the job. And sold the old one (25 years old) on eBay for parts.
Not the fairytale ending but I do now own a very nice generator 🤩
If I had kids, they would be required to watch these kinds of fix it videos everyday before bed...

I had no idea it was that easy to take out the main jet. I've always stopped at spraying carb cleaner up that tube, now I've learned more about digging deeper!
The import thing with the main jet is using a screwdriver that fits properly. Most standard screwdrivers are too wide. You can grind one narrow, or get a screwdriver meant for small engine carburetor jets.

Nice find and fix. I use a tea ball in my ultra sonic cleaner for the jets and small parts, helps me not to loose them. Another great video. Thanks

@28:04 I spotted the piece I had left over when I had to take my generator apart to fix the stuck intake valve. I took off that metal shield located under the valve cover but when it came time to reassemble the next day I could not recall from where it came. THANKS!!!! This video is a big help! Now I can reattach the "leftover" part.

Great video, Had a similar problem with the same machine that hadn't run in several years, disconnected the oil sensor wires and it started after a few pulls

Wow! Killer find for $75. Likely frustrating for you in terms of content, but an easy one makes up for the extra cost that goes into others. Great camera work and detail as always. I didn't notice an audio issue early on and loved the school bus comparison!
There were some really bad audio issues that I had to cut all together. Had do do lots of audio splicing, voice overs etc... but the good thing is that issue is fixed with the video recording app. Also finally bought a better microphone, so the quality will be better.
@@jcondon1 Yikes! Well the good news is that it was a short video if it required extra time in the editing room. Kudos to you, and others, for spending the time to do all of that. I have the interest, but not the time so the time that I DO have I spend on equipment and AWAY from IT! 😉

I’ve got the same generator I bought 15 years ago and still runs great. Paid $1,500 for it new. Yes that was a steal !

That's a nice find! - The kind of thing we never seem to see around here. I'm a bit mystified as to why anyone would cut off the tip of that shut of valve. It's known as an "anti-diesel valve" or "anti run-on valve" to bring the engine to a decisive stop when switched off - some lean burning engines tend to run on, firing without a spark, hence the reference to diesel, for a second or two after shut-down. My John Deere lawn tractor has the same sort of valve, but working the other way round.
I thought maybe at first someone had installed a non-resistive sparkplug which caused a problem with your phone, but seemed fine later on. Thanks James, great find and video.
It was an Apple bug with there camera app. Ended up installing a non Apple recording app. It actually records audio properly and has a lot of other nice features.

What a deal good quick fix
Your mentioning the choke seeming to be stuck on reminded me of when I was asked to look at a generator which had been loaned to the local scouts (a more undisciplined bunch of louts could never be found) and had been returned not working properly. It would start but ran slowly and wouldn't regulate. After a lot of fiddling around, I realised that one of the louts had managed to push the throttle control so far around to the "fast" setting that the control arm had become stuck behind a limiting arm and the throttle was so far on, that it was actually almost "off" again. After a lot of trouble, I finally managed to free the control arm and get it onto the correct side of the limiting arm, which solved the problem and got the generator working correctly again.
(This was a pretty large generator, of around 12k watts or more at our country's standard 240V)
That's a pretty unusual looking carb/choke setup. I know when the "Shanghai Special" motors started appearing, parts were a tough find... hopefully that situation has improved. Many of those motors run OK.

yeah, I'd like to hear your comments on the quality of those red fuel filters. Others are claiming they are absolute junk compared to a paper gravity filter in regards to filtering quality!

Very educational videos. My generators are sometimes hard to start but it’s usually a fuel issue. New fuel and a little squirt of fuel into the cylinder is all I need to do.
If you could dig up a Honda EM with auto throttle and explain how they work (or fail) I’d love to see that... mine is screwy...

At 27:15, I'd get a filter that you can see through, and it will most likely have an arrow for direction of flow.

That is one beast of a Generator! Too bad I can't buy it...shipping to Canada would just a SURREAL in price!
Also I find 3/8 fuel line works well as a breather hose. More durable and seals better, much less cost.
The deals you get are just out of this world. There was a generator on Marketplace for a while for $150, the ad read "99% of a generator" The generator was in a pile all stripped down as a basket case. I think the person saw one of your videos and said - I can do that! Nope, I was wrong. No idea what it sold for but it's not up anymore.

James I do a lot of small engine repairs as well. I have the same ultrasonic cleaner but started using “Gunk Parts Cleaner Complete Kit with Dip Basket” a few years ago (Advance Auto Parts sells it). It is really stinky but works much better at cleaning the pilot jet passages.
James, first I love all of your videos. Second, I've watched other channels with tons of dead air, air tool, and hammers used on delicate parts. You need to wear a lab coat because you are like a surgeon. Serious skills and excellent editing too.

There's allot of people that don't want to mess with machinery, no matter how easy it is and then there's the not mechanically inclined, they just prefer to go buy a new one, great video and find.

A lot of people don't have the time, inclination or the tools. What I find really strange are engineering students who have never swung a spanner. I find most good engineers seem to have hobbys like diy, off roaders, moto x bikes, classic cars or similar.

Similar to the Generac 5500W gen I found on Craig's List some years ago. Seller was asking something over $100 but when he tried to start it, it wouldn't stay running. I offered $80 and he took the cash. Problem was a slightly bent linkage - just enough to make it bind. Still have that as my gen to run power tools when needed - it can start and run the 10" table saw.
We've learned to manage most power outages on much less power. Less than 12 hours will be on the solar-charged backup system I built - nice to have silent backup ;-) More than 12 hours, we'd be on the 1600 watt inverter gen for not-silent backup but long backup per gallon.

I loved going to yard and house sales. I worked small engines before I retired. Might look for a bigger generator that is broke. The key was it started with starter fluid. The biggest problem is when wanna be mechanics tear into them and put them together. Don't assume the way it is, is the correct way.
I'd love to work on and sell some old power equipment, more for something to do, and not necessarily as income. I saw you spent $70 for that generator and I've never seen anything priced like that locally. I went onto my local craigslist and chuckled when I found that most sellers were asking full new retail for their used generators. Even generators that had fuel leaks and carb problems were listed at what I could order them for from home depot or amazon brand new. I guess I'll have to stick with side-of-the-road discards for the time being. Great video though, thanks for the content!

You should probably check the valves as well, it was blowing back through the carb when you were running it

A simple fix is a nice thing, though rare in my experience.
It’s nice to get one that work once in a while.
It is crazy what they make with a single cylinder engine. Noisy while running at ~3600 RPM. My diesel is 3 cylinder, water cooled, electric start, and is more likely to last under load. Seeing a unit that can be loaded into a pickup, vs a trailer mount unit rated lower, makes me wonder about the full load and surge capacity of both. My diesel is rated to run continuous at 6KW with 8KW surge for 30 minutes. It would be interesting to see them both load tested side by side. Nice video showing the troubleshooting.

I'm interested in the vacuum assisted choke setup, can you explain what that does, and it's advantages, and does it need a manual choke, just do a video on how that setup works please. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
I have had to use two of these generators in the past. The problem with them is the honda motor they have.
I know that the choke was not the issue . But I sure am not a fan of the Vac control chokes as I have had issues with them many times ! Great score , Nice generator ..ENJOYED
The vac choke system is an intake leak waiting to happen. Also not a fan.
Standard automotive 1/4" fuel line that you buy at an auto parts store or hardware has a slightly larger OD than what is typically used on small engines. This makes it difficult to fee through tight passages (like some Tecumseh engines).
Yes, for those I use the stuff with a reduced OD. Makes it a lot easier fishing the line through.
I find that some of these generators hunt when air cleaner assembly is not installed and /or foam filter not properly treated with oil. Without air cleaner assembly installed, improper vacuum causes surging or hunting. Same thing happens if air cleaner cover not sealed properly or loose fitting.
Looks like you need to put a Super Beta tablet in that carb😎
I bought a Titan 9000ES brand new about ten years ago during a bad ice storm. Anything you can tell me about the quality of the machine and type of motor. It has given me good service the few times I have needed it. Last time was three days last week. Thanks for the very informative video.

my old one has an electric "idle control", a big solenoid pulling on the throttle arm.

I picked up a non-running Titan generator similar to that last year for 125$. This model had the Briggs and Stratton engine, but the carb is very similar. An hour cleaning the carb and it was good to go. Unfortunately after a power outage due to an ice storm the generator ran for 48 or 50 hours straight and now the rear shaft seal on the engine is leaking oil. I have never pulled the powerhead or whatever the proper term is off a generator before, looking forward to it.
It is a bit of work the first time you do it, but think that one will have threads to help push it off.
Was this your easiest fix. Show suggestion, storing and care for small gas engines. You've almost got me thinking I can fix a generator. The things that can be done with electricity

sometimes it is the simple things that are overlooked and the problem seems unsolvable; always check the basics, spark, fuel, sparkplug etc..!
James where did you get your ultrasonic cleaner ? What solution do you use for cleaning carburetors ? I’m looking to buy one in the near future. Yours seems work well.
Is it possible that side screw is an air bleed so turning in reduces air to make a richer mixture?
I personally wasn't expecting a fuel control solenoid. Even our EU6500iS doesn't have one. A fuel solenoid from a GX340 would probably work.

Then I found your videos and found them extremely good and helpful . Stater burnt .melt down
I found another video that you should definitely watch please you have not shown a hidden screen filter on most carburetors
The filter is on the fuel inlet pipe on the carburettor it causes surges hunting all the symptoms that you have on most of your generators. The video is called. Hidden carburettor fuel filter screen on all small engines. By donyboy73
A lot of your spare carburettors which are hunting most probably have that issue being blocked. On the fuel inlet pipe you can pull the pipe gently out the filter is right behind the piece of pipe sticking out of the carburetor.
