In this video, Sam takes a look at the DS-1X Distortion, part of Boss's X range of digital DSP stomp boxes, and compares it to the standard analog DS-1...
The classic Boss DS-1 was originally released back in 1978 and is probably one of the most popular distortion pedals of all time, we’ve all had one on our pedal board at some point, right? Whilst it may share a similar name, the DS-1X is definitely not a reissue though, as Boss say, it’s more of a rebirth.
Cosmetically, the new X range of pedals are very similar to every other Boss pedal. They’ve got the same bomb proof housing and are supplied with a 5 year warranty, run off a 9v battery or optional power supply, but one thing that gives it away that there’s something a bit different about them is this nice shiny control plate and chrome knobs. The big difference is under the hood…where as the DS-1 is a classic analog distortion, the DS-1X is powered by Boss’s state-of-the-art multi-dimension processing, or MDP, digital processor. This powerful, real time processor adapts to the way you play, providing the ideal distortion tones depending on dynamics and register.Very easy to use, there’s controls for volume, distortion gain and low and high EQ controls. Because it’s digital, the DS-1X has a very low noise floor, even at high gain levels and the volume and EQ controls have a wider tone shaping range than most conventional analog pedals. Tonally, it offers a high clarity distortion, that doesn’t suffer from muddiness or boominess when you’re playing chords, and it’s super responsive to volume changes and picking dynamics.

DS-1 still rocks. Just gotta love that classic sound.
Exactly! I play it with JB & Pearly Gates neck.Just love it.I have the black 40th version which is beautiful.
The DS-1 X wins for me. The note articulation is awesome. Couldn’t care less that it’s digital. Sounds great into a clean Fender amp.
my impression but the ds1x seems to have more distortion than the DS1, anyone else with this impression?
It’s crazy how well the ds-1 still holds up even today and the amount of saturation and gain is actually pretty crazy as well
What about hum, noise or buzz? Some of these earlier designed pedals can be very noisy. For 40 years I have loved my 1977 MXR Dist. Plus but it's too damn noisy for this era. Is the DS-1X considerably quieter in this regard that the original DS-1? I would think that this would be one of the advantages of digital over analog. Still can't figure out which one of these I like more but the noise-hum factor is definitely a real consideration for me.
The DS-1X has a lot more articulation and a clearer, more transparent sound, while the DS-1 is a lot grittier with more sludge to it. I definitely prefer the DS-1 if only for the kinda music I enjoy making, but having the tone stack separated into separate controls for bass and treble is definitely nice. Ive always felt the DS-1 loses more bass than I'd like, even when dialed in well
Can anybody tell me the lick he plays around 2 mins into video or is he just improvising
Can't believe how much better the new ds1x sounds
Because it's a synth now, not an analog pedal anymore ))
howie walker Agree!
@@GuitarAge who cares if its sounds better thats all that matters..just proves that analog tevhnology sometimes sucks balls
@Mike Graham In a live situation nobody will be able to tell analog from digital
Mike Graham kemper tones are getting closer and closer to the real thing, you can’t just say they all always sound choppy, that’s just bias because you prefer analog because it’s ‘real’ and atm it has the better image
Is this the same as the Boss Adaptive Distortion pedal?
I'm going to wait for the DS1xyz Waza v2. However, this DS-1x is pretty good. Thanks for bringing this to us!
This is the best comparison .. thanks
What is he playing at 3:42? ... it's on the tip of my my mind but can't think of it.
Great sounds and playing...
1:28 is this a digital pedal??
The DS1X sounds a lot clearer than the DS1 which sounds a bit muddy
0:23 spoonman?
for sure
Feal the rhythm with your hands
I love my DS-1, my only problem is it's boost is sadly low and I'm not sure how to help that. I pair it with a TS9, and compared individually the DS-1 is way quieter turned to max level.(Regardless of chain placement)
@Matthew James Scott, try a GE-7 with it. Shape your tone more and boost the volume.
The Boss DS1 are made in TAIWAN and have low output compared to the Japanese made black label DS1. Same goes for the Boss DS-2. 🤨🎸
Ds1x sounds huge almost like it has slight chorus on it.. Sounds great for rhythm because it makes your riffs sound kinda like double tracked... But for leads, it sounds weird and Ds1 sounds better for lead for me
maybe your leads are weird..lol
@@MrOzgooner why so triggered by differences of opinion? Why make such snarky and condescending comments on every comment that prefers the DS-1?...I mean, I think the DS-1X sounds better...but people have different opinions man.... You must be into politics...
@@Jficklen sounds like your the one who has got the problem ...i made a comment in which you got really snarky and attacked me.....???? get over it and move on..people are so petty and worry about such irrelevant things
@@Jficklen dude, he made a joke. He wasn't attacking you. Yet you immediately got triggered and you just _HAD_ to be a victim didn't you. Jesus, you can't even make innocent jokes anymore cos we can't risk offending you
@@duffman18 and a year later it’s even worse smh can’t say anything anymore without 30 egos getting hurt
DS1X sounds fantastic. I'll be saving up for that one.
If I was playing a genre like classic rock then I would be all over that DS-1X. But I do more hardcore so that DS-1 does all I need
Perfectly said!
Dude, the DS1 can’t do hardcore unless your pairing it with an overdrive or something
The DS-1X is nice and it looks great but you cannot ignore that warmer classic rock sound the DS-1 gives
Ds1 is my fave distortion pedal EVER! Used if for decades to turn my Plexi into a 2 channel beast. I like the X version too, but it is different, tho it can be similar. nothing more to say.
The new one sounds much much better. Clearer sounding and not so fuzzy.
Both are great
I just thought, sometimes the old DS 1 sounds better. But this new sounds great too. I think it's an application decision.
please do ds1x vs ds2
Dirty Window by Metallica at 4:43?
Ds 1x for both solos and riffs i play rock fusion stuff so its very versatile
I think i'll go ahead a get both these AND a RedOrange "Mega Distortion Pedals for my effects platform and get rid of my Metal Pedals as they're a bit too much over the Top and i'd already be pushing it with the Mega Distortion as it is!!
What is that first riff he plays love it
spoonman by soundgarden
Evan A thanks mate
A little bit late, but I hope you get to read it. It's a medley: the very first part is from "Let me drown" and the second part is from "spoonman", both by soundgarden, by far the rockiest and best songs from superunknown. Cheers mate!
Both are great.good .nice .sweet.
Thansk
Love the nasal unadjusted sound of the DS-1. I see people criticize that sometimes, but we can get another pedal if we don't like that.
Not in love with the wave of digital processing pedals - went that route years ago with digitech pedals and ended up dumping them all.
these are much better than those digitech digital crap..for eg these pedals work awesome with your volume knob..something a lot of digital distortions cant do well normally
Thanks sam 😀 I think I prefer the DS-1
Depending on the settings that you use, the Ds-1x sounds a lot cleaner.
It's got more gain range to it. I think a lot of people getting "bad" sounds out of it haven't taken the time to actually dial it in (like it sounds completely different with highs all the way down)
Both are excellent, but the DS-IX nearly jumps off the screen, I like it.
Is it weird that I still prefer the sound of the ds-1? Either way these are two entirely different sounding distortions.
DS1 anyday buddy
Normally i would say to always go analog for warm distortion/overdrive but this video has forced me to rethink that.
definitely ds1x because i like distortion pedal which have EQ to set
The new one is super punchy i love it!
But can you use the DS-1x like you can with the DS-1 as a boost on the Lead channel on your amp to get Modern Metal tone (Djent)? Tried it with a Metal Zone........total failure. I use either the DS-1 or Tube-Screamer
Wow..you just sold me on getting a DS-1 over a DS-1X for sure, thanks 🤘
for sure that riff was spoon man
I can tell you for sure that it was
Compare by setting all parameters to noon
Ds1. Very nice
Best selling pedals ever, the DS, year after year and yet people supposedly keep incessantly ragging on them as if they don't want you to have one? Conspiracy theory or jealous love?
DS-1 Blows it out the water, the X sounds nasty on the top end
2:34 PINCH HARMONIC
The x is more versatile, and some tones are better than the classic but the classic has better tone in other areas they both have their own specialties
I only use boss pedals. I got 5, Metal Core, Metal Zone, Distortion ds1, Auto Wah, and the Power Driver pedal
Why?
DS-1 sounds ‘Hairier’. DS-1 for me.
yeah hairier crap sound..lol
DS1 is original dist. DS1x like metal efek in my ear.
For me for some reason DS-1 somehow seems to separate the tones better when using riff chords and some other chords and solos. In terms of tone DS-1X sounds more mushy and muddy, in a worse way, in an attempt to sound more full-bodied. But at the same time i know that this things is a matter of taste and preferences. My feelings about this two pedals is just my own opinion, and not all will feel the same way i do between them.
Unexpecyed spoonman 😂
DS-1 is warmer
Hoi goin!
DS 1X
I hearing Slipknot notes in those riffs
Ds1 is more fuzz like, I much much prefer the 1X
DS-1 all the way ! The X lacks fangs & claws and adds something i dislike : not an upgrade.
gay you noob
;-)
gay you noob
Offers a high clarity distortion..... welcome to the Post-Modern world.
DS-1X better for me
Original ds-1 is still the godfather of pedals, screw the ds-1x, just boost your ds-1 with a boss sd-1, all you need, save your $$$
The ds1x is like 200
Yes! That too also what you said.
3:12 Geez, that sounds terrible. As does 5:12
Beautifully flawed
DS-1X has better note articulation . . . but the whole point is DISTORTION. Not articulation. So DS-1 wins. Classic!
DS-1X by a country mile.
Ds-1 wins!
I’ll take the DS-1. Sounds better and is like $100 cheaper. So um yeah.
DS-1X wins.
DS-1 sounds better to my ears
thought the DS-1x sounded great until 4:25 then it kind of fell off a cliff
There is no comparison here at all. DS 1 X is clearly better and all weather pedal.
Pedals are the same in name only. DS-1 has always sounded like a cheap marshall to me
The DS1X is a buzz machine , the analog pedal is much better .
seriously???? That analog ds1 is a the buzz fizz box from hell..abs shite..
MrOzgooner I played a ds1x live, it sounded brilliant, no buzz, just some fat distortion with some really nice articulation and this was just with all the settings at 12
ds1 sounds like a kids toy
For the price the DS-1 is way better. I also don't like the look of the silver. I can't believe how much they are charging for the DS-1X. All I really want out of my DS-1 is a better passthrough buffer.
They don't even sound similar.
DS1 actually sounds grittier and more authentic. The DS1X sounds like an iRig digital plugin. FAIL !
You damn right ! 👍
They both sound like shit. Get an MXR Fullbore metal. Has the best eq shaping I’ve ever used in a distortion pedal. Have t used a pedal for distortion in years those as my amps distortion is more than adequate
Louis Zava br00tal
Both of these pedals should be thrown far away into the bottom of the ocean somewhere. They both have ear piercing harsh high end fizz that honestly sounds like crap and is very irritating. It is too harsh and not musical sounding at all.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Be nice to have used the bridge pickup to get a better sense of the tone
