- There's a ton of options out there so it's tough when you're building your first guitar rig to know what the essentials are. In this video I break down the gear I find is important for a well rounded guitar rig. Whether you're just starting out or you are trying to simplify your crazy pedal board, this video will help you narrow down those options and get to playing guitar.

I'm so confused, first prostate exam in 7 years? So is it your first prostate exam ever and you're 7 years old or did you have an exam 7 years ago.
Ahahahahauauuahahahahahhahahahahha i am dead
Josh mentions 26 pedals in this video, and only two of them were JHS products. This is one of the many reasons that people love you, Josh.
So funny what you said about the DS1 distortion, I was an apprentice at the time and my journeyman told me to go and get some tools from the van, on the way to get the tools the owner of the fish factory i was doing the job at shouted over to me. He asked if I could take a few boxes of fish out to the loading bay for him and he said I can have anything I wanted from the old store room...various cardboard boxes full of old crap pretty much....so I sift through some old Christmas decorations and some old newspapers and plates ect and I come across a guitar pedal and it was the DS1 in pristine condition. I pull it out and go to ask the owner if could have it...he tells me it was his sons' who passed away recently and he said to me, you remind me alot of my son and I think it was meant for you. It was my first guitar pedal and I'll never get rid of it....
"alot". Idiot.
Very, very cool. Not only did you get a great pedal, but an awesome memory to go along with it!
Sorry my post wasn't up to your standards Simon. Must be a pretty sad life to go through CZcams comment sections and pick out grammatically incorrect sentences.

A Miku into an Erathquaker Afterneath is amazing
Right? Once you use a Miku you're never going to want another pedal.
I love this guy he has no problem promoting other pedals besides his own great job.
Was just about to say this. Guy clearly loves pedals and is confident that his pedals are good enough not to need the hard sell
he is modest enough to promote a RAT and not mention that he actually sells a RAT mod (which i want really bad).
But he's not stupid,; these are usually those clearly inferior to his own product.
Although I'm pretty sure he's a secret Boss sales rep

"The most important aspect of picking out an electric guitar is that you're having fun playing it and it makes you want to play more" - everyone liked that.
what i love about josh is that he doesn’t only push his line but promotes other companies gear too. just goes to show he actually cares about the player, not the just the business.
I wish they promoted more!!! Hard to know this lineup sometimes
Because Josh is so generous and complimentary to his friends and competitors in the pedal game, this channel is essential for a CZcams guitarist. And his weird sense of humor is adjacent to mine.

Yes. Distortion, modulation and echo effects are temporary.
Miku is eternal
I was real disappointed that the Miku didn’t make an appearance in the closing jam.
For the people who just want to see the basics:
1. Overdrive
2. Distortion

6. Tremolo
7. Modulation
8. Tuner

1. Wah

My Record Time minimal rig answer : People think of John Frusciante as the guy with the gigantic pedalboard from which he draws complex sonic textures. But back in '91, his rig for the landmark album Blood Sugar Sex Magik was minimal. Basically it consisted of a wah pedal, a chorus and a distortion. (WH10, DOD FX65-not his usual Boss CE-1- and a DS-2.) These are still part of his core sound, even on the new 2022 singles. There you go! Minimal rig = Legendary sound. Thx Josh!
And a dyna comp for his bssm tone
Californication era guitar tone is awesome too and he used a few pedals even to play live, pretty awesome
For BSSM era it was the DS1
Spiderland by Slint is amazing for such a simple production
yes! basically nothing but cleans and distortion

Guitar Rig Essentials:
Money
I've been using a free virtual rig lately. I'm getting all sorts of great sounds from it.
@Kingg YT I have a computer that's running Ubuntu Studio as the OS. Ubuntu Studio is free, and it comes with two virtual guitar rigs: Guitarix and Rakarrack. The only thing you need to buy is an audio interface to send your signal into the computer.
Honestly, I can't say enough good things about Ubuntu Studio. It has literally everything you need, from beginning to end. It's a complete multimedia production suite, covering everything from music production, graphic design (album art), PDF publishing (liner notes), and video editing.
But yeah, I run my guitar completely clean directly into my interface, which sends it into the computer. I then use Jack, a low latency sound server, to route the signal into Rakarrack, and then route (again with Jack) the processed signal into either Audacity or a DAW. From there, everything is just production.
@@SynthApprentice Would that run on a raspberry pi 4?
Money is essential for most hobbies. Prioritize guitar gear over everything else and you'll have your dream rig in no time.
I quit drinking three months ago. Now I have a Gibson (!!), a good amp, and some sick pedals. Priorities.
The Miku sounds an awful lot like Animal Crossing music.

I need a Miku for my harsh noise rig.
@iain schmaloer so do I, I'm only half joking about wanting one for that purpose XD
What they need is a metal version. If the metal singer is just going to mumble growl, one might want to just get a Miku Metal pedal instead.
I wonder what could be done post pedal to render Miku-Chan a little more authoritatively.
My ivog has been awol for a couple months, dig it out, get some octave thing going...
You definitively should try a Mooer LoFi Machine ;)

The Cars first album was minimalistic, but, wonderful.
Just found this channel today and have been binging all evening. I love being able to put a face to the pedals, and I love what you’re doing with this channel. ✌️
You wanted to know about a minimal album. Remember The Presidents of the United States of America? The guitarist only played with three strings, and the bassist only played with two strings. And the drummer was left handed but played a right handed trap set with his arms uncrossed. I just always thought of that as wonderfully minimal, if only in production and not songwriting.

What I love about this channel is how they don’t just advertise themselves just to advertise themselves. I mean they’re doing guitar gear vids and they literally never use anything of theirs unless it makes perfect sense to use it. So much respect.
The DS1 comment is so true. First pedal I ever owned and its definitely the one I've seen the most.
I respect this guy so much for removing his ego and still loving his craft
Even when it came to demoing you’re Tremolo or the Boss, you chose to demo and feature that Boss unit. Surely it’s admirable quiet self confidence to know your stuff is good, and comfort in that fact to feature a different brand product by no means diminishes the worthiness of your own product. Once again, well done to be much more than just a salesman for your own stuff.
well it's more likely because nothing compares to BOSS

I was lucky enough to grow up in a home saturated w Beatles. I never understood why people would hate them, dislike them or even just be ambivalent about them. They are at the root of almost everything that has come after. It almost doesn't matter what you put to the test, eventually going back through its evolution, you will find that the seed came from them. For the longest time I thought that there was a section of society that was musically deformed, underdeveloped, or maybe just so pretentious that they would put their own ego in a position to try and eclipse this musical gift that we had received. That was the only way I could explain "Beatles hate." Anyone that grew up w the Beatles knows exactly what I'm talking about. But then recently I figured it out: its not that man is naturally malicious or so self destructive that it would purposely denigrate the musical harbingers of love; no, its that some of us are "delayed." Some of us just haven't been exposed to enough of their music to see that hating the Beatles is like kicking yourself in the "music balls." Your comment about 'Tomorrow Never Knows" is a perfect example... If you like that song, I humbly suggest you look into it's history, and how it was based on a mixture of John Lennon's study of the "Egyptian Book of the Dead" and the beginnings of his explorations into LSD. If you choose any of the 3 subjects mentioned: Lennon, EBotD, or LSD, and begin an honest and brave research project, you will have firmly set foot on the path to the greater truth of the universe and greater existence at large... That's the beauty and true existential import of the Beatles, they are a smaller fractal manifestation of the greater beauty and love that our universe and all of creation is, and possibly even a microcosmic model of creation itself! Anyway, welcome to the the more beautiful and pure understanding of love, music, and reality in general! It makes me happy to see you here! and let me be the first to congratulate you and wish you well on the most beautiful and amazing journey, to which you have found the door. If you decide to walk through, I feel that you probably cancel out the karma of some frightened authoritarian deceiver somewhere that has just manipulated some poor soul into believing that its "not cool" to like the Beatles, and thus set them back musically and spiritually by an unknown but seemingly catastrophic degree. I hope that you continue on your path and possibly show the way to someone else; thats the only way we are gonna get out of this world "alive." I apologize for the lengthy response, and assure you that I'm not some sort of "Masonesque" zealot. I just know that the road to our salvation and a more utopian society is going to come from everyday people, like us, making conscious decisions to set down our divisions and embrace the beauty of music, art, and all other creative acts. Best wishes and regards to you my friend. -C

FUGAZI is AMAZING!!
The Telecaster (originally the _broadcaster)_ started as the _Snakehead_ in 1949… I have several telecasters ranging from 1959, to 1968, 1969, and a 2009…they’re incredible guitars…
Honestly, to me, the birth of what is considered alternative, indie, lo-fi, college, underground, etc. but what is actually just minimalist in nature through AMAZING songs is R.E.M. Murmur. Released in ‘83, with one “single” that lived in my subconscious (thanks to my brother) strong enough to make me curious about the whole record decades later…one rotation & I was equal parts floored & hooked. Purely on the strength of the songs. I suggest everyone listen to this record.

My favorite pedal amp is the Rivera design Princeton Reverb 2. I acquired two of these when I worked at Fender in the late '80s. Extremely versatile with it's mid and treble boost, the master volume is a plus also.
Favorite minimalist album: Elliot Smith's Either/Or.
Or basement on a hill
Either/Or - - desert island album. He never did a better one!
Coincidentally, JHS featured "Figure 8" in another one of his videos.
10:42 mark is without a doubt the best part, all guitarist need to pay attention.
I LOVE the Revolver album, great choice. I've only just discovered your channel, and I'm a TOTAL convert. I also love it that you don't just 'widdle' pointlessly in your demos 😊😊😊😊
this might be the best youtube video I've ever seen. great info, demos, editing, song. this should be in a textbook for "how-to-youtube"
The Cars debut album is great. Minimal and iconic and so uniquely Cars.
Important pedal to any rig is the EQ pedal. I don't know how I ever lived without it!!
Josh, you’re such a legend. Thanks for all you do, have done and will do!
Thanks to you, I am encouraged to try this year with varied and cheap pedals, I have a year to save and check which are my essentials, thanks man
Came for advice on downsizing my board, left feeling like I probably can keep it the way it is. Killer jam at the end!
"everyone in your family knows what this is"
lol'd at that one
everyone in my family knows EXACTLY what it is!! ha ha!! Thanks for the great comment!!
I bet E Fude is fun at parties!! :)
best overview of how to use the pedals I've seen. Thanks!
Man that sound at the end is awesome! Thank you!
"Take my breath away" on the Miku? I love you, man.
The greatest pedal I've ever used is the Proco Rat. It's just...perfection. So so simple and easy to use but it is incredibly versatile. The compression is nice, the distortion isn't overpowering with the right settings, and when you start to crank it you can get unbelievable sounds out of it. But the BEST thing about it by far is how much it preserves the actual sound of your guitar. I find even with Boss OD-3s or Big Muffs that they don't let much of the guitar through. The Proco Rat really does. I. Fucking. Adore it.
And as for Reverbs I think the Hall of Fame is great. Would recommend it big time.
You talking about the tc electronic hall of fame?
you're actually really good at guitar. it is pleasant to hear your song jams. thanks for ton of great gear info all the time
“It’s Hard to Find a Friend” by Pedro the Lion is as Spartan as it gets and is just amazing. No skips.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I didn’t want that track to end! Once again Josh you demonstrate the power of a good pedal or two to transform sound without needless over the top shredding. Fanflippin’tastic.
Hey Josh, great job man as always...ever try the boiling point OD/distortion by rockbox?
Fuck shredders
I love this guy because he's not a "true bypass" snob. I *love* Boss pedals!
That song at the end is beautiful!! Thank you so much!
This channel is great. Glad I stumbled upon it. Love the humor.
Bob Dylan's debut album...just a boy with his guitar and harmonica. Captivating all the way through.
Tom Petty - Wildflowers is a great minimaliste album to me!
One of the best albums ever made
I'm always impressed with Josh's playing.
