@@kdphotos4691 backing vocals instead of a choir... Article online: "Vandross, Cherry and Clark would turn out to be one of the driving forces on the album, frequently taking the lead vocal role and allowing Bowie to slip into the background for the very first time. Indeed, it was Vandross who came up with the chorus for ‘Young Americans’. As the singer recalled in 1987, he approached Clark during a session and said: “What if there was a phrase that went, ‘Young American, young American, he was the young American - all right!’ Now, when ‘all right’ comes up, jump over me and go into harmony.” Bowie apparently overheard the conversation and ran with the idea."

Started cranking up the 8-tracks in my cars in the early 70s! He's always been my favorite and I love almost everything coming out of that era- I even call the 70s decade the "Golden Years" in honor of his song. This particular song, Young Americans" has withstood the years for me and with me. If I had to pick one song for the top (impossible), this would be it! Great track - Fame was the stand out track on this album, although I love the second track 'Win'.

David Bowie, as a songwriter, shares a thing with Bob Dylan (wherever you place them on the scale of talent, and personally I'd put David not too much beneath Bob, as if anyone even comes close to Dylan): they both were/are able totally to imagine and inhabit the thoughts, feelings, hopes, fears of characters outside themselves. I think that's rare. Many revered singer-songwriters (James Taylor, Carole King) draw on their own experiences. Bowie is able to invent a character and see through that person's eyes.

Title song from one of my favorite Bowie albums, love this song! Most of the album was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philly, home of the famous Philly Soul Sound. Other songs to check out from the album: Fascination, Right, Somebody Up There Likes Me. And of course, the album ends with Fame, recorded with John Lennon. Again, fantastic album!

So good to see you back again, and what a song to return with! The entire Young Americans album is a banger and one of my favourites from him. :)

That's Luther in the back ground! He was visiting a friend and overheard David Bowie singing and said this needs a hook and started "singing young american, young american she was an young american". Bowie heard him and came out and said who is that singing...Luther became a back ground singer for him!

Jovaughn: Good to have you back man 😄👍🙏 Turn the volume just a few clicks.
Good track to start with. You're correct, the lyrics are an exercise in themselves but this track has a real groove. Bowie, eh? What can you say?
