None of them have any chances when put against Peppino Spaghetti, the man himself.
The most accurate Italian representation of all time
He is literally the best of both worlds, speed and brawn!!!
you beat me to it :(
Shut up…
True
I disagree with the thesis; the idea that Sonic games are like roller coasters, and aren’t exciting after the first time is flawed.
Sonic stages are inherently expansive and offer much in the ways of exploration and finding shortcuts.
Sonic Forces is virtually the only Sonic game to behave like a roller coaster; otherwise, Sonic is renowned for being spacious and rewarding on multiple playthroughs.
Therefore, I think this thesis is born from literally trying to play as Mario in Sonic Generations, and from him only having played Sonic Forces in the past.
Yeah he made it sound like the only Boost-era Sonic game he'd played, was Forces.
The absolute worst boost-era Sonic game to-date and the worst comparison he could possibly make.
He should probably play Generations AS SONIC and then revise his thesis once he has data that is far less skewed.
Would have been super interesting to see Mario in an Adventure style game like SA1, SA2, or Sonic 06 (P-06). That way mario has far more of a chance as that level design is great for both platforming and speed
Exactly, his thesis was inherently flawed
Plus most Mario games aren't really playgrounds either. The majority of them are 2D games with a set goal and a single path to the goal. Even among the 3D games, they're not all sandboxes. Sometimes there will be an alternate path or shortcut, but like you said, Sonic has that too.
sonic fans cant accept the fact that sonic games suck lmao
It's almost like Mario is not as powerful as a magical creature that expeeds the speed of light and fights eldrich horrors for a living.
Mario has survived a blacl whole and thrown entire castels before, without power ups. Sonic is still much more powwrfull wnd a better fighter but mqrio is atleast not a push over
I indulge Mario fans that think that the plumber can win. Hell, I grew up with Mario on the wii, but it's not a contest whose stronger. But it is fun to see how they handle each other's worlds
@@soleonshae8657 true
Mario is more powerful than you think. If he has his speed from his 2d games this would be no problem
@@TitanForcemaxMario got trapped in several games and needed rescuing. From Yoshi, Princess Peach and Luigi.(multiple times) Sonic been rescuing masses and individuals from both his world and other worlds. Even in crossovers. He's a solo adventurer just like Mario and Link. That makes them tough but Sonic doesn't fall for tricks like he's some non self aware anime character. His weaknesses isn't water. It's himself. That Black whole wouldn't have caught him if he wasn't running his Damn mouth instead of his feet. Same thing in Lost World and generation. Most of the time he will get things done without screw ups. Like in Frontiers, Free Riders Team racing etc.
I think one of the reasons frontiers is so good is that you get your “rollercoaster” AND your “playground.”
Also sonic unleashed
ur spitten facts rn
Yep, and seeing it is a massive success, we can expect SEGA expanding more on the playground aspect in the future, though, to be fair, a part of Sonic games' charm is finding other routes or shortcus throughout the rollercoasters that his games are. Leaving games like Sonic Forces aside, most 3D Sonic games are really fun to replay.
More like frontiers is the entire theme park for a sonic game
@@0zerios0it’s not a playground. In sonic frontier, Sonic is on an island but he’s not necessarily playing. He’s just exploring the island finding the chaos emeralds. That’s nothing like a playground.
The roller coaster analogy only works for Sonic Forces. A good 3d, boost formula Sonic game (like Sonic Unleashed or ironically enough, Sonic Generations) is more of an obstacle course where you have to learn about the shortcuts, learn about every bump and obstacle and consistently try to make your time better and better.
facts
His comments on the problems with Sonic legit feel like they come from someone who played a single game on autopilot. You can of course do that in obstacle courses, but it will lead to you falling on your face more often then it leads to passing the obstacles. In that case yeah, Sonic games really are akin to obstacle courses and it just feels more exciting to adrenaline junkies like myself then playgrounds do.
@@robmacher3253 Hell, in Sonics first level in adventure he has an option to run around chased by a spikey ball and to retrieve a seal or leap over the pads to skip the entire dolphin section.
Very fair, but, I don’t think he’s necessarily insulting Sonic with that metaphor. He’s clarifying what the problem is with switching the characters from game to game. Mario is a very well rounded character, whereas Sonic’s main attribute is speed. So, yeah, Sonic is more like an obstacle course rather than a rollercoaster, but it still stuffs Mario in an uncomfortable position, because the main focus is still speed. Which is why he puts the blame on Sonic in the problem with this experiment. Theoretically, most other platform characters could manage in Mario’s world, if a bit clunky because the main requirement is to be able to move and jump, a trait most, if not, all platform characters share. Sonic, on the other hand, has a certain speed limit to be able to pass certain levels. It’s way too tailored for Sonic for this kind of game mechanic swap.
@@BlankPapers I suppose that's true. I guess you could also say for Sonic in the Mario game that it's like comparing the average person to an athlete, Sonic's playstyle there could potentially allow for some incredible speedrun potential for people who are willing to put in the effort to get used to Sonic's greater speed and agility, but i guess Skooch just hasn't played long enough to be able to put in the effort to get good with Sonic
Since we're putting Sonic in the very first 3D Mario game, I think it would've been fairer to put Mario in the first 3D Sonic game, which is Sonic Adventure.
Generations honestly wasn't a good pick for this experiment.
And not just that, the sonic in SM64 is based off of mario's moveset, in a mario game, he can still punch, use power ups, do all sort of acrobatics, etc... While the sonic generations mario is a straight up rip from mario 64's source code, so it is pretty unfair.
@@TheLeoGBA If you did give sonic his Sonic Adventure 1/2 moveset and physics, he would break the game, just imagine the spamdashing through the levels and killing every enemy by touching one button and NO fall damage.
Mario should have his moveset from galaxy or odyssey in generations for it to be a little more fair, but even then he still lacks the speed and movement options to go through Sonic levels.
But yeah, it was a little unfair since Mario was using his less complete moveset
@@dracomalfoy6886 It's not just that mario has a less complete moveset, he literally has the same moveset he has from another video game, while sonic has the same moveset meant for that video game, do you get what I'm saying?
@@TheLeoGBA yeah, that's why I said a mod that gave sonic his whole sa1/2 moveset should have been used (if it existed) and for generations a mod that game mario his galaxy or oddysey moveset to get it to be more complete
none would have the moveset required for that game and some coding would need to be done so that sonic could damage enemies by spindashing and homing attacking, along with porting their og game physics in both cases
there would have been softlocks in both games (But sonic would still have the advantage thanks to having less moves but similar versatility just oriented to other things) while mario would need to do a lot more tricks to be able to complete levels (And would still need coding so that the game doesn't glitch by walking through the loop instead of taking it)
I'm kinda surprised Nintendo and Sega haven't just made a Mario/Sonic crossover platformer already.
It writes itself!
They did
@@dionlackey798Not the sports games tho!
They don't count! 🤔
@@dionlackey798"platformer"

This was a lot of effort for what was essentially "I like Mario better than Sonic".
Valid take tbh
No Sonic's Better
Him preferring Mario is completely fine, but a lot of his complaints regarding Sonic feels like he has very little experience with the series and as such feel like flawed arguments rather than valid complaints.
I mean to be fair, Sonic in SM64 is still a modded Mario, so he has all the necessary moves that he otherwise wouldn’t, like the side- and backflips. Meanwhile Mario in SG is literally the Mario 64 source code with two new moves to make it possible at all
Exactly. This video proves nothing
Could Mario use Backwards Long Jumps to go faster?
@@DiabloOfGod Yeah he can BLJ. Look up the Chemical Plant SM64 Generations speedrun, it shows it off
Your reason as to why Sonic works in a Mario game is only ,somewhat, true to boost games
They're more linear and automated because the focus isn't on the platforming itself but your ability to take quick decisions and react to what the stage throws at you
It's not a problem in of itself, just a different philosophy (execution is another factor)
Mario would've had a better time in Sonic adventure games levels, because the philosophy is more similar to the one of the classics
This philosophy focus on the ability of the player to manipulate Sonic's and the level design physics to traverse level as fast as possible
Which is pretty much just platform games speedrunning push to the max
I’m surprised the Mario 64 model hasn’t been put into Frontiers, unless someone’s already trying that.
Someone's putting mario with amazing animations in Frontiers at the very least so that's awesome, is not the Low-Poly 64 Mario but still cool
@@fakezero546 Oh that’s cool, not sure how something’s will work though. Boss battles being one of them
@@son-of-1810 wing cap and give the sword boss the fire sword that's just flames in a line
the mario 64 generations mod was because of something called DLL Injection, which took very long to figure out. basically it's adding source code to the game essentially.
I think someone just made a Mario 64 skin for Sonic in Frontiers, not sure if it's normal Mario or 64 Mario but there's definitely a Mario in Frontiers.
Neat video, though I’d say it not as cut and dry as made to be.
As someone who’s spent way to much time studying Sonic, the main issue here steam from first experience and replayability.
The first experience with most Sonic games first experience are usually rough. Not exactly something you can pick up and play for a lot of people, however giving the time you start to get a feeling for it. Taking advantage of the wonky design to style and smash through stages. (Not that this exactly applies to ever Sonic game, they really kind of just have a case by case problems and philosophies towards game play)
Unlike Mario which most can pick up due to it’s more traditional/easier set up. (Not saying Mario can’t be stylish and fast paced as Sonic, though I’d say looking at a speed run between both hopefully gives a better feel of their differences.)
@@bostoncook2305 I mean that actually might be the mod but yeah. If we really want to throw a wall at the message, pit both Sonic and Mario in their 2D outing and see how that would work.
@@bostoncook2305 wym Sonic's speed is fundamently flawed?
It took me 12 hours to beat Sonic Adventure 2 for the first time because I did not know how to play it, but I see others play it and fly through the levels like it’s no challenge at all. Can confirm the games’ fun is based on how often you replay it
@@Icepiq72 true, coming from a very new fan and player who tried sonic rush for the first time and didn't manage to finish right away cuz it all felt very new to me. i am someone who prefers taking things slow and steady, so a sonic game seems very hard. however the more you play the more you're experienced at it.
Sonic isn’t always roller coasters. He’s had more exploratory games in the past, and he did them quite well at the time. Granted, it’s mostly the 2D entries, but there are a few 3D entries that enable some exploration and reward you for doing so.
Though even at his most exploratory, Sonic levels do have a lot of rails (metaphorically, not necessarily literally; though ever since _Sonic Adventure 2,_ there’s been plenty of literal rails too), regardless of dimensions, so…
To be fair, the Sonic Generations world is broken most likely not out of rush but rather deliberate because of time eater
Sonic Unleashed has much better level detail on the sides and same goes for Sonic Colors
I always wondered how it would look if Mario and sonic flipped worlds, though if Nintendo and sega did ever do a crossover game. I think they will handle the flip better than expected, though the sonic in 64 mod came close to what I imagined. Great video btw!
Sonic absolutely blitzing the zones with spin dash and breaking bowsers ankles with ice flower power
@@TheReZisTLust don't forget mario ripping apart the death egg with his bare hands.
i dont think sonic would be a plumber cause he hates water xD
I’ve always wanted to see it. Not some stupid Olympics game -.-
They would say all mario games are bad if they were swapped
To answer the question at the end, Freedom Planet 1 and 2 are just absolutely perfect fast games
Underrated game let's ve real
@@Jc_Did_The_CZcamsr2 is kinda iffy. Serviceable but downgrade even visually. 1 is pretty good tho.

I was very engaged by this content, and felt the need to engage in return!

I mean... yes... but also a better comparison since the creator is using Mario 64... I don't know would've been Sonic Adventure or Adventure 2? Not saying Mario wouldn't have trouble here either, but they are a bit more exploratory vs the newer games... which is why Sonic felt at home in a Mario 64 level, that seemed very much like Adventure or Heroes Sonic rather than boost formula even more slippery modern Sonic from Generations, or Classic Sonic with his momentum based stages. Like if you'd put boost Sonic in 3D World or Odyssey... probably do fine, you put That Mario who... can roll in a ball, wouldn't be an issue either in a modern game like Generations. Not your fault, you didn't make the mods, but I feel that would make a more fair judgement, that's like taking Doom Guy and slapping him in Mega Man 2, and Mega Man... well trying to survive in Satan's butt hole if he was slapped in Doom Eternal.
Also um... Roller Coaster analogy yeaaaaaaah only some games. Even Generations does have different routes, different methods of exploring, it's not like watching a movie like Forces where you can sleep and still win, but not as good as Unleashed... day stages. Then again, the Adventure/Heroes games they are a lot more open. Even Classic Sonic games... well 2 is what really got that ball rolling... pun not intended, as 1 was linear. In Sonic 2 they devised it so if you take an upper route, there are less threats and more rewards, taking a lower route it's more treacherous, more pits enemies and spikes. You take a more straight and narrow path then you're going faster, making for multiple ways to play... most of the levels once you get to Metropolis Zone it is a bit more linear again, but decent chunk of the game before then. This is also explored in CD, where future and past levels are differently designed from each other and present levels, even boss fights might get easier or harder depending on what you do within the previous levels. Sonic being about speed, yes it's his mantra, but he's been as explorative as Mario since his begi- um... sequels.
@@andrebabani7152
I do, it creates dramatic *FLARE...* and emphasis.
I think the Sonic Adventure levels are pretty good design-wise. They tend to be more along the lines of Super Mario 64. Actually, I kind of wish we could have seen Mario tackle that game.
9:57 It's almost like you're not supposed to move through Sonic levels at a slow pace
What I learned from the Sonic in Mario 64 mod is that it's not _taking a shortcut_ that gets you disqualified for taking a shortcut, it's _winning by too much_. If you fall from the top of the slide to the bottom, then delay crossing the finish line until the chao has almost caught up, you won't get called out.
22:17 Have you ever played a sonic game outside of this video? One of the core tenants of his level design is exploration.
More than Mario honestly
Hell, even this game has multiple paths on its levels. Take Modern Seaside Hills for example.
Was unsure how your branching out to be forms of content but man it's far better than I could have even thought it could be.
While I'll miss the league content I got no worries that every video you come out with will be watched and enjoyed to the end
I don’t really think the spectacle in Sonic is bad, because usually you’re *actually playing the rest of the game* normally so tiny breaks aren’t bad. But due to the fact you’re using an *unfinished proof-of-concept* Mario mod, you’ve forced an issue into existence. So, this one can’t really be put on Sonic’s game.
And the “rollercoaster” analogy isn’t the best, because in rollercoasters there’s no score to aim for. It’s a one-and-done. Sonic gives you a big fat ranking at the end, saying “hey if this letter isn’t S, try harder!” While Mario is simply “yay you did it”. If Mario is a playground for your imagination, Sonic is urging you to hit your hardest movie shoot that’s as stylish as possible.
21:58 bro ate sonic 💀

My brother in Christ have you even seen Peppino from pizza tower in action?
Yes he has
The description and “analysis” of Sonic games was so painfully ignorant it hurts
agreed, dude was literally sucking mario so hard for no reason, like, bro, just play the game.
sonic game: get your best time and parkour cool
skooch: movie game go straight forward dont care abt time brrr
0:23
Skooch, if we were in his position, the pipes blocking our way would be about 3-4 stories tall. I don't think we'll be beating that with our bodies.
I am so happy with these new videos from Skooch. Doing those repetitions to reach nothing, grind to no result and being pointless so we can have a video. Please, keep suffering for our entertainment.
I think I can explain this:
Mario was in a boost sonic game, but Adventure Era Sonic was in a Mario game, and acts different.
Basically, there are three major Sonic Styles: Retro (platforming + speed), Adventure (Speed + Free-Roam), and Boost (Speed + Speed)
With boost its technically speed and reaction time but speed and speed w9rks for sonic forces lol
@@superwariobros9108 Also games like Unleashed and Generations also feature multiple paths. Even Colors encouraged exploration to an extent
It wasn’t even adventure, I’m pretty sure they just raised the speed and gave Sonic some moves.
Very interesting concept for a video. Glad to see Skooch's creativity flowing
This video sucked
I'm amazed that although you show that Sonic can survive in a Mario game but the other way around is not possible (or much more difficult at least) you still manage to conclude by Sonic as being "the problem". The video took a lot of time to show the bugs of playing Mario in Sonic Generations (invisible walls etc) forgetting completely those bugs exist simply because you're playing the game in a way that it's not designed and is not possible in the official version of the game. Those are not bugs as there is no way you can encounter them in an official playthrough. As many noted, exploration does exist in a Sonic game, by finding multiple pathways to reach the objective (for example the red rings in Sonic Generations). People always assume Sonic is about speed, while it's much more about reflexes and momentum. Speed is a reward you get because you're playing the game well, you manage to avoid obstacles and use the physics of the game to your advantage. Of course exploration feels different than in a Mario game, with several "tracks" to reach the goal instead of an open field (Sonic frontiers aside), but it doesn't make the experience less enjoyable or more repetitive. I'd argue Sonic has a more "arcade" nature than Mario, but a lot is design to encourage replayability (from the scores in Sonic 1 to 3, the ranks and missions in the adventures, the red rings in generations to the chaos emerald powers in superstars) but with one goal only, do the most "flawless" run you can. Saying you are on autopilot is an easy critic that's barely valid in the first stages of each game. The first stage is usually indeed pretty easy, but in order to have the player used to the physics and philosophy of the game. Winning the latter stages without good reflexes and use of the momentum and knowledge of the diverse gimmicks is simply impossible. Mario on the other hand is more "vanilla" plateforming. Extremely solid with clever level design and solid physics, but it resemble more what a traditional plateforming looks like (which doesn't prevent challenge). It's obvious from my comment that I'm more of a Sonic fan (the universe and characters speak to me more and I love the pace), but I do acknowledge how constantly good Mario franchise was (while Sonic franchise is more ups and downs). But the reason I think we still talk about Sonic all those years later, even after all the difficulties the licence had (and the sometime unfair trashing), is due to the fact it's one of the only licence that offers a completely different and unique experience of plateforming that feels nothing like Mario.
9:46 I think you make an interesting observation here... Sonic Levels are big and I mean BIIIG. And they have to be, cause Sonic runs through them so quickly! The player never spends more than a few seconds in any given Section.
And that was always the case, to a degree... Even the Classic stages are usually longer than traditional Mario levels.
This was definitely an interesting video, though I think comparing Generations to SM64 isn't necessarily the most accurate (because one of these games is way older than the other)
Excited to see what you do next! Spark 3 might be an interesting Speed game, it's very dun even if the Story is wack
20:38 "Get a load of this!" lol
Elder millennial here: I haven't played a Sonic game since Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Old Sonic games were very replayable. The different tracks took some searching to find. Often you'd see the exit or something on the edge of the screen and wonder "how do I get there?" After exploring for the path, being able to execute to get there quickly was very satisfying. It lead to early speedrun challenges, like "How early can you get all the Chaos emeralds?"
Anyway, love the content! Keep on, keepin' on. And League isn't dead, it's toxic and I'm slipping under.
Great video, but I would say that a great 3d sonic game is not one that is like "watching a movie" or a "roller coaster", but is more about memorization, finding alternate paths, reflexes, and control
Mario 64 with sonic looks so fun lol
The evil Pac-Man isn’t actually something that comes from eggman (I think) it’s what the first boss of sonic lost world uses
8:18 The Doomsday Zone music goes very well here!
19:03 you were doing the bounce attack this whole time lol
You need to play Sonic Unleashed if that's your opinion on Sonic. QTE is only really a Sonic Forces thing. Playing that would give you a wrong opinion on the series now. There is QTE in Frontiers, but not like Forces. It's really only for bosses and it's not the usual.
17:50 that is that moon kind of thing that zazz (the first boss & member of the deadly 6 (where zavok comes from (mentioning him specificly because out of the 6, i believe he returned the most often))) rides in sonic lost world
I really enjoyed watching the Mario segment on stream and it would be cool to see you try the rest of the levels. And speaking of fast paced games, this is the perfect opportunity to shill the Spark Trilogy. Spark the Electric Jester is a speed based platformer inspired by the adventure games and they feel so good to play
20:57 i was actually in a discord call watching this and i checked it so quick to make sure that wasnt me
Neon White is really good at selling the appeal of actual speedrunning in a more streamlined manner. Especially getting Red Aces makes one feel like actually speedrunning a game.
After hearing the end of the video I was like. Okay, someone has to suggest neon white. And yes. I second this.
Should’ve added BLJ. Also, if hes been going through pipes longer than sonics existence, he can bear this. 11:24
The BLJ does work in the mod. It's literally just 64 Mario's code ported into Generations.
Neon White is one fast-paced game that I absolutely love. You feel like a speedrunner playing it, and it’s absolutely designed for it with a lot of options for getting creative with shortcuts, and the game having things built in for speedrunning. There are ghosts, leaderboards, incredibly fast retries, and a clock
That's Zazz's machine from Sonic Lost World 17:45
as someone who grew up with mario in my childhood, and sonic in my teenhood, i love this

Mario has an all-around easier, pick up and play nature to them, which always makes them fun to play and return to from time to time, but imo the best Sonic games have much deeper mechanics, and are way more fun to master. The twitch reaction platforming, the point system that actually matters, etc. Its not as one-sided as you make it out to be.
I didn't think this experimental video about character swapping would end up discussing why Sonic's core gameplay doesn't work sometimes, it's an interesting concept one I've been questioning the longest on how Sonic could truly work in 3D. He's iconic and has a lot of potential and it sucks that the people making his games are still struggling on finding a path for him, especially since I've been introduced to so many Sonic fan games that nail it, Heck there's a Roblox 3D Sonic game the does well with 3D... almost
Sonic Generations is a really good game lol adventure also shows how he works in 3d
Adventure literally shows you how the game could truly work on 3d 🙄 If you mean speed wise then just give him a turbo mod and he's modern sonic with boost and almost perfect movement. Almost cause it's still a Dreamcast game.
It’s not the people making his games, it’s the higher ups at SEGA. When Sammy bought most of the stocks in the company he only wanted Sonic to improve his brand(Sammy made gambling machines) he doesn’t care about Sonic having good games he cares about the reputation of the character. Every “bad” Sonic game Sonic Team produced in the 2000 period coincides with the time he bought stocks in the company.
There’s never been a time when Sonic’s ‘core gameplay’ didn’t work, and I just want to comment on that mistake.
It was always an issue of execution.
Sonic Forces failed because they had one year to make the game, and squandered it with only a handful of level designers.
Sonic 06 failed because they didn’t have enough time to finish the game.
Every instance of Sonic in 3D; between SA1, 2, Heroes, 06, Unleashed, Colours and so, were conceptually sound, and oftentimes, really good outings that sold well.
The problem is always the execution.
@@hihi-nm3uy Fax, SEGA doesn’t give them enough time to make polished games. Sonic Frontiers is a great game and it took 5 years to make. If they give them more time to make games the better they’ll be, and by result they’ll make more money and increase in fans.
Great video, the commentary layered on top of the edited gameplay footage works really well. Also loved how the video was scripted properly, with an intro, both halves of the equation and a conclusion. Most youtubers would split videos like this into two episodes which I personally wouldn't like as a viewer. Had a lot of fun watching this!

Favorite part of the video is how you claim that Sonic’s levels lack exploration yet it’s the exploration that allowed you to find a better way to use Mario’s abilities to pass through. I got stuck in this one section so I had to backtrack/restart and find a different way. That being said it is true that some 3D Sonic games lack that exploration, but those ended up being disliked by the fans. Forces >:(
Man, this makes me wish Italians were real
By the way, when wearing the wing cap as Mario, you can triple jump in place
Im sorry, Its just too funny for me to not mention. 8:06 he said sudoku when he totally meant seppuku. 🤣
People can censor the word "suicide" as sudoku
