    Wow that is an incredible collection. I thought my personal collection was somewhat extensive until I watched this upload. I must admit I take up 10 times the space you have utilized there with my planters & such. Well done 👏

    loving your collection..im jealous off how you remember all there names..i can't even remember the names of some off the people I work with.. and how you remember what and when you watered them and in witch order is amazing..ive not got half as many plants and sometimes I think witch one I watered last.. and what day.. as its just coming to summer here now. things are just kicking in..hopfully I'll have some good growth from My cactus seeds. I'll let you know.. also my Echeveria that seeded is going yellow. all the leaves from the bottom are going yellow and falling off. hope I'm not losing it.. but bonuse is I think some of my seeds are growing... good luck through the colds months for you and look forward for when your back.. and keep gardening 😁

    • @87walker
      @87walker  Před 7 lety +1

      I have difficulty remember peoples names too but plants I have no issues with! he he he... As for the watering it's come down to habit as I follow a bit of a pattern which I find helps. My rule however is, if in doubt don't water. It is quite normal for echeveria to lose some leave from the bottom and after some time they will form a neck which when it becomes unsightly you can cut the head off (leave an inch or so of neck) allow to callus and re plant. Hopefully it comes good for you. Very exciting that your seeds are growing! Thank you for your well wishes for the colder months, this time of year is very nerve racking as I need to make sure everything is dry before the real cold comes. Happy Gardening!

    Those copiapoas at ~6mimutes in are cool! I have a copiapoa thats very similar that I havnt completely identified yet. Im thinking its the same species. Mine is about the size of a tennis ball and is covered with pups on both the top and soil line. It also has flowered 2 or 3 times since I got it. With two flowers that open twice a day for two days each. They were orange/yellow and kinda notocactus-ish. If those are 2 years mine must be at least 5 or 6 then I assume.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  Před 7 lety +1

      You can be quite firm with the brush for most cacti although some (lophophora in particular will get damaged with a hard brush) always pays to spot test first to see which cacti are softies! Most are fine though. Funny that you say they look like muppets as that is exactly what I call them! Happy Gardening!

    I wish you would share more information about where you purchase your cactus especially Astrophytum!!!!

    • @87walker
      @87walker  Před 6 lety

      Hello, I did address this in my cactus chat video. Unfortunately I cannot disclose where I purchase my plants as I buy mostly from private growers (people like me who grow cactus for fun). My suggestion however would be to network with other growers in your area, this is by far the best way to source the more unusual plants. You could also buy seed, I do this a lot as there are many plants that even I can't find for sale so I have to grow them from seed. Good luck and Happy Gardening!

    "The Mealybug Invasion of 2015" LMAO!!! Where do you live and what soil mixture do you use? I live in Phoenix and it seems like my biggest problem is sunburn (who knew a cactus could get sunburnt, right?). I use a 1:1 mix of crushed pumice stone and cactus soil (from Home Depot, not Miracle Grow, but I can't remember the name of it at the moment). Do all of those plants have top dressing? If so, where do you buy it from? Sorry for all of the questions!!

    • @87walker
      @87walker  Před 6 lety

      Ha ha! Yes it was quite the invasion.. LOL.. Ok so yes you are right cactus can get sunburn and surprisingly a lot do! I would say 50% of what I grow prefers some shelter from sun. Your soil mix sounds great! I am a big fan of pumice and the cactus love it too. I do not use top dressings on any of my plants, what you see on the tops of the pots goes right the way down however there will be more organic matter further down the pot as it settles over time. If you are wanting to top dress it can be any pebbles you like does not really make a difference so just pick something you like the look of. Happy Gardening!

    Just wow! What a huge beautiful collection of cacti. ☺Three questions, how often do you water them and when you do, do you water directly over your cacti or only onto the soil? Also, how often do you fertilized them?🤔 Thank you

    • @87walker
      @87walker  Před 7 lety +1

      Hello and thank you! Ok, so how often I water is not an easy question to answer as I have many different plants from different regions that require different amounts of water at different times of the year and also weather plays a factor too! I only water a few cacti all year round, the rest stay completely dry for part of autumn, all of winter and part of spring. I water at the base of the cacti and try to keep the bodies dry, the larger plants do get rained on though. I will try and do a video about watering in the near future. But a good rule for now is "if in doubt don't water" ... Happy Gardening!

    • @mollycher3630
      @mollycher3630 Před 7 lety

      87walker Thank you 4 ur prompt reply n 4 answering my 1st 2 questions but how about my 3rd. Guess you overlooked that haha!! Doing a video on how you water your cacti would be great 4 a green horn like me but try 2 include one on fertilization. That would be an even greater help to people like me becos I see that all you tubers cacti just keep on flowering and I want mine to flower too. Thanks once again!!😃😀

    • @87walker
      @87walker  Před 7 lety +1

      I did miss that part! Cacti unlike most plants do not require fertiliser, in saying that however I do fertilise mine once a year. I use a fertiliser that is low in nitrogen at quarter strength and only give the plants a very very small amount, this however is not responsible for the flowers. For cacti to flower well they do need to be flowering age which varies from plant to plant and also need to be kept dry during winter, cold winters help too. Some cacti flower better and easier than others, if you want flowers I would recommend looking for Lobivias!

      87walker That was a very thorough n well explained answer. I definitely know what to do now, thanks 2 u. I'm from Malaysia so it's tropical weather which is either sun or rain but I do understand your explanation n will adapt accordingly. Thanks once again!!🤗🤗

      Track down a systemic pesticide and you should be fine from there on. It can take trying a few different ones to find the one that works best for you.. My favorite is bug killa by richgro.

    why force them to go dormant? try to enjoy every bit of a good growing day. By the way, you really do have an incredible collection, worth admiration. don't give up on patience, it builds strength.

    • @87walker
      @87walker  Před 7 lety

      Hello, forcing cacti into dormancy is a necessity (in my climate) as a lot will rot if they are holding too much water when the cold weather comes also keeping cacti dry during the cold promotes flowers come spring time. Thank-you for your kind words and Happy Gardening!
