  • When you think of the Netherlands you don't really think beaches, surfing, or a pier, however after watching this video you will just how big and beautiful the beaches in Holland are. In particular we're talking about sheveningen beach in the Hague. The Hague is the political capital of the Netherlands in south Holland and one of the biggest cities in the Netherlands and host one of the best beaches if not the best beach in the country.
You can do all sort of water activities in the Hague beach. There's a huge pier with all sorts of fun and games including bungy jumping. I was quite surprised to find such a beach this far up north in Europe.

Basicly.. most of the coastline is like this. Zeeland has massive stretched out beaches too. And then there are the crownjewels, the beaches of Terschelling, Ameland, Vlieland, Schiermonnikoog and maybe Texel (my least favorite island).

@@VolpeWhereAreYou theres no account for taste ofcourse.. but Texel is more like a polder. Whereas Terschelling and the rest feel like real islands. Terschelling hosts a theatre festival each year with theatre/art/music for two weeks taking over the whole island. Oerol.nl. I go to Terschelling once a year and Ameland 2 times a year. Trust me. They are way better. I dont know why Texel is always pushed to tourists, maybe because its easier to go there. But as you no doubt have learned in life, anything beautiful or worthwile takes some effort. Boats to Terschelling via www.rederij-doeksen.nl/en and Ameland via www.wpd.nl/en/

Never been to Texel, but Vlieland and Terschelling do not allow you to go by car. You will have to walk or bike when you get on the island. Texel allows cars.
When you go to the islands nothing much to do on them I think, so if you go do it for, cycling, the beach or for nature.
Also technically you can walk to some of the islands on low tide, well in spring/ summer you can. Also note if you go to Vlieland by ferry you can often see seals lying on the sand.

Since you like smaller towns and cities, and seeing now that you have a car at your disposal, you should really go visit Brielle (also named Den Briel) to the southwest of Rotterdam. It's a fort town that's not reachable by train. It's very quaint there and historic, with nice little alleyways and secrets to it, much like Delft. It isn't as big as Delft or Breda, though. You should definitely take a deep dive into its history. Close to Brielle is Hellevoetsluis which has a nice and historic port section that virtually hasn't changed since the 1600s.
Also, Haarlem. Gotta see Haarlem. My favourite city.

The Netherlands has hundreds of km's of amazing beaches. It's basically one stretch of beach from Hoek van Holland to Den Helder. There's an annual 6 day beach walk (strand zesdaagse) on this part of the coastline. The islands directly south and north of this stretch are also amazing places, especially in summer time.
Even the Port of Rotterdam has great areas for recreation. Near the Maasvlakte (a man made extension of the port into the sea) is the Slufter beach. Lots of kite surfing activity going on there, almost year round.
The province of Zeeland is getting more and more popular with divers. It has cold water reefs and is teeming with marine life. In the right time you get to see thousands of cuttlefish mating. Lots of huge lobsters too. And no it's not allowed to take them out. 😉
The Wadden islands in the summer are absolutely stunning with more sunny days per year than the mainland. At low tide you can go on a guided walk to several islands. It's called wadlopen. You should check it out.
The town in this video is Scheveningen and is part of the The Hague municipality. Rotterdam also has its own coastal town and that's Hoek van Holland. It's a similar great beach and right around the corner you can visit the massive Maeslant kering, two moving water barriers both the size of the Eiffel Tower but flat on the sides of the major waterway into the port of Rotterdam. When there's a storm surge these barriers pivot towards each other and close off the waterway entirely. Once every year they test the system and you can visit then also. They publish the date on their website.

The coastal areas are a vital part of the national water defense. Actually very few parts are built on as most are protected national parks and maintained by the waterschappen. The beaches are maintained and kept above a certain elevation. Lots of techniques are used with natural vegetation such as helm grass being a part of it. Roots keep the sand together and bushes tend to form higher and higher dunes over time.
There's a thin strip of land along the coast that's above sea-level. Everything behind it is below sea-level.
