I have come late to the party and last night binged watched the entire mini series, enjoying it immensely.
Excellent review, tx!
4/5 in the Guardian and 1/5 in the Evening Standard. Seems like some people are uncomfortable in front of a mirror đ
Usual impartial take from the UK press đ
Rhyddid i Cymru!
Commenting before I watch this. Was exited to watch this show, the trailer seemed to tick all the boxes for something I would be interested in. First episode was okay but it all went downhill after that, had to watch in small parts because I couldnât stand the character of the sister (who seems to be the cause of 80% of the problems, eventually getting her dad killed and family presumably arrested). The show could have been a whole lot better, I wish it was. Bad retelling of the 84/85 miners strike.
Objectively I think that's a totally fair assessment. I was disappointed that the opening story thread about the kid's death wasn't pulled on, and in general, narratively it's a mess. But it's bold and risk taking and also Welsh Nationalist, in parts. I thought the performances were all strong and I continued to enjoy it even when it went off the rails
Just finished this. My god it was excellent
I just thought it was a little rushed and the mental health angle was a distraction. I can totally understand why people in Scotland, Wales, NI, Channel Islands etc have desires for independence, the English government is a disaster dragging the union down and barely represents any of the counties outside the South East. London and those supposedly representing the interests of everyone exist in a different reality and are completely self serving, I'm totally behind any independence movements and we shouldn't lose it when anyone suggests it
Sheen should be ashamed of himself , as if there isnt enough racism pointed towards the Welsh already from the English , he then goes and puts a drama on TV about it !
Would have been more topical , true and real if it was directed at followers of islam !
But that would have never got on TV
Different tiers of racism in the UK , that was already obvious
Not sure your point here. Are you saying they should have written a story about Muslims experiencing racism, or as the victims of racism?
One of the better parts of this show is that there's no racism as such. Some casual anti Welsh comments but mostly from characters who get redemption.
Imagine if the drama was slightly different
Lets say Wales was full of muslims and the borders were shut and the English were beating back those coming from Wales
Imagine the complaints going into the BBC , from muslims !!!!
There would have been REAL RIOTS , BBC buildings would have been on fire , and chances are the drama wouldnt have been allowed to be put on TV , there would be calls for JIHAD and FATWA's issued !!!!
How can the BBC show a drama that is racist towards the WELSH but would never show one like that if it was directed at the muslims ?????
Funny how the BBC & Government view what is racist and what isnt !
For the reasons you gave. The Welsh can take a bit of fiction on TV.
Complete and utter bollocks- Michael Sheen you really should be ashamed of this nonsensical and ludicrous nonsense
don't hold back Robin đ
Yes wobble I did get carried away because I wasted 3 hours of my life watching it. I should have just said as the critic from the independent newspaper said: âit was a messâ
