- A short movie capturing the amazing synergy of Barry Harris & people. Filmed during the Barry Harris Workshop Rome, March 2019. Harris is 89 at that moment. Made with the ear of a musician, with the eye of a reporter and most of all: straight from the heart. A film by Heleen Schuttevaêr; video editing Hidde Kroonbergs.
As a community music post-graduate, and a Jazz saxophonist, I chose to watch this video from beginning to end because what I know, but have not been taught, is that Jazz is the REAL unifier of people from all walks of life or backgrounds. Barry Harris was a great Bebop Jazz pianist par excellence in his hey days and later but he just chose to get into informally teaching Jazz bebop music in the end. He has done so well in many countries where he was invited to do workshops. I don't know any great jazz musician who has ever done this, only Barry Harris who lived for over 90 years when most of his peers had passed away many years ago. What I learned from this is that it seems every great musician should have done this...to give back or plough back the knowledge to the people. I don't want to talk too much. Thanks for sharing!
I went to his thursday classes at the jazz form on broadway in west village nyc. We omly paid five dollars to get in but i was fasinated by the simplicity of his teaching and helping young musicians and vocalists God left him on purpose to
Last all of these years R.I.P
last all of the years
Amazing, wish I had been there too. I could have learnt so much.
Barry is way more famous now than he was twenty years ago. Every jazz musician in the world knows him and he wasn't THAT famous in his hey -day as a pianist. It's a triumph for him. RIP Barry Harris, beloved mentor.
Barry has a gift and was a gift. Love him and all of you !
Wauw. Well done Heleen.
The greatest comment ever said!!
“He’s only full when you take something from him”
He was one of my sister’s instructors and friend. Delightful man.
Barry brings the community of love that jazz is all about!
I love Dr. Barry Harris‘s way of teaching jazz. He breaks it down so it makes sense, logically.
Now my eyes are full of tears, watching such a great gift to humanity. Barry you were and still is a blessing to the world.
Devastated to hear about his passing today. Your film will carry on his legacy!
Nooo when did he died?
@@hectorromero8215 December 8th 2021. Barry lives through us all

Reminds me of the classes I attended in the mid 80s.
I owe everything to his influence.
Barry is a musical treasure! We studied with the same teacher and I remember watching him go from a Chopin Etude into a Bud Powell tune. An exceptionally gifted person.
The best jazz pianists can play classical. Jarrett, Corea, Hancock, Harris

Thanks for this video.Barrys impact will continue to influence jazz for many years to come
Bless you for making this film. I couldn't agree more that Barry Harris is a jazz giant whose contributions to the art form as a musician, educator, and tireless ambassador are as worthy of documentation for cultural posterity as are those of maybe more celebrated giants of the genre. May his name be remembered even long after those of us alive today who remember him have passed on from this mortal coil. The lives of succeeding generations will be indeed as enriched by knowing of this marvelous teacher, musician, and living jazz encyclopedia as we are today. Thank you again for your wonderful work.
Barry, you make me cry! You make music become MUSIC!! "The more I hear you, The more I love you"
This video makes me cry. It is so beautiful. Thank you very much for it.
Barry Harris is a gem and an inspiring teacher and Muscian.
I like how Barry brings people from around the world to learn, play and sing together. Thanks to the filmmakers for my introduction to Barry Harris.
I am going to enjoy listening to more of his music.
Barry the legend 🎹 🎼 .....few people if any understood music theory like BH.
My hero :) I was lost in the modes till I found the great Mr Harris.
This is such a beautiful film, sharing with us a glimse of Barry's aura. Thank you so much Heleen! Happy Birthday Barry. Wishing you many, many more wonderful birthdays.
This captures his effortless ingenuity and the joy of learning with him so well. Thank you, and happy birthday Barry!
What a beautiful film. My dad used to study with Barry back in the 80s, he was one of his first students at the School of the Street. 40 years later, I have the privilege to learn from Barry through his Zoom workshops every Saturday. Truly a genius, and the world is a better place for having him in it.
It's also so good to see Andrea, Leanne and David and co outside of the Zoom box! What a beautiful family. That's what it is about - passing on the music and building meaningful relationships. Barry was so moved to see my dad come to the workshop all the way from Greece, 40 years later. Thank you for this!
@Stamatis Seraphim awesome story. Thanks for sharing! I wish I could’ve studied under Barry.
A really beautiful film! I enjoyed learning about the community surrounding Barry Harris. What a beautiful human being

That organisation of those many students was a masterpiece also. Of course It was the spirit and know how of Barry Harris that shaped that film.

Fantastic, what a giant.
Wonderful, thanks for sharing Heleen, from Caracas, Venezuela
RIP doctor; thank you for the Stanford workshops
Thank you Heleen Schuttevaer
Wonderful. What a great joy to have been there. Thank you Heleen for this wonderful gift ❤
I have just only learnt about Barry because of his passing - and Y.T. deciding to send me links about him. I like very much like how in an other video he tells a young man 'that's not how WE play that chord. He seemed like a tough teacher but a caring one. Thank you Barry and rest in peace.
very nice moment. authentic..👍
Ahmad Jamal would take a class FROM Barry? That seems quite surprising to me considering they’re the same age and Ahmad is way beyond Barry as a musician.
So much you know so much you talk!
Thanks for making this video!!!
tight cropped photos of people taking photos of Barry Harris? This is some cult stuff lol
OMG the youtube algorythm understands me. How else did I end up getting this recommended? The audience with Barry Harris. In a Rome underground cathedral....
May I ask the first song on 0:00~ ? its nice
GOAT as in the Greatest Of All Times
Any sheet music played from 4 min?
Beautiful Barry!
Wat fantastisch dit Heleen, ik ben diep geraakt!
Hi Heleen. How can I collaborate and create Portuguese subtitles (for free) to this amazing video, ? Let me know if that is something that would interest you.
Please get in touch with me to see what is possible
Wonderful, wonderful for him and for them to be at this moment. But i would like mention Nica (the Baroness) who helped create the foundaton to spread the love and teaching of Jazz that has become a world music.
RIP Barry Harris
I like how he tells everyone the stop all this nonsense and get out of here stuff. He knows music is just really making sounds and we`re off to fantasy land. at some point, you got to wake up and just go home or somewhere else. lol
Hoi Heleen, op zoek naar wat info en goede lessen van Barry Harris kom ik zomaar een film tegen van mijn oude buurvrouw!! Well done!!!!
Wow that loud gruff Italian dubbing/interpreting is kind of horrible.
Great man.
I do hope he learns what an arpeggio is one day :) hehe... I find it common among jazz musicians to use this word incorrectly all the time. It is not a preset scale. An arpeggio means the notes are played separate one after another. The order is inconsequential. In fact improvising arpeggio patterns is at the root of improvisation and it is also what many 'licks' are.
Also for example if you play the notes c, e, and g together you get a C major chord but if you play c, then e, then g one after another that is a C major arpeggio. if you play e then g then c that is also a C major arpeggio. if you play C then G then A then B then D then E then C - that is also a C major arpeggio. Do you see?
Barry teaches to improvise and teaches the basics... but he could do it better if he understood and taught the correct form of the arpeggio. He wants to teach his students how to arpeggiate freely but is mis using the word arpeggio. Mm
You misunderstood. The notes they were singing while saying arpeggio, were in fact an arpeggio @ 10:04. It was only after that they sang a scale.
slap.
10:35 bellisima
Thank you!
Thank you!
