    Hey there! I’m a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant so I had to check this video out to observe his behavior (and because I’m that much of a behavior geek). I wanted to say THANK YOU for the bit around 13:50 where you mention that owners of suburban dogs get upset when dogs bark at night, when it really is what they have been bred to do. YES! Spot on! Dogs will alert bark because frankly, that’s one of the main reasons that humans decided to domesticate dogs’ ancestors in the first place! These guys have allowed us to survive as a species in a very unforgiving world- and being one of humans’ first early alarm systems most certainly contributed to our survival. So when your dog alert barks, they are doing their genetically-encoded job, and not being a little brat :) Anyways, loved watching this quite a bit: thank you for such a treat!

    • @marigeobrien
      @marigeobrien Před 2 lety +44

      First and still the best. Alarm systems, I mean. ;) They are great deterrents for home invasions, too. I once heard that if a burglar hears a dog bark, they will pass up that house. Even small dogs will make enough noise to rouse their owners.

      I have a dachshund in an apartment in the city but I always remind myself she may look like a lap dog but she was bred to kill creatures from rodents to badgers. Her bark is very sharp and grating but she's genetically disposed to do it. She's just trying to be a good dog. For a dachshund she's quite quiet but they'll never be silent dogs.

      He probably wouldn't like it. My daughter's Great Pyrenees, is old and getting deaf, but he still insists on being with his charges of goats and sheep. Daughter has him at the Vet regularly and gives him Arthritis medicine. He has never wanted to go in the house, won't come in. He has several insulated dog houses scattered over the yard but usually sleeps outside. When he has to go to the Vet he cries all the way there. (Have you ever tried to get a 115 lb. dog in a car when he doesn't want to go? ) He worries about his charges if he is gone. She has an Akbash who has taken over most of the guard duties, so Icicle (GP) is her backup.

      Yea outside animals don't always enjoy that. My 20 yo Siamese threw a fit if I tried to keep her indoors for more than a few hours. Knew how to use litter box, never scratched up furniture was an inside kitten, nicest cat I ever did meet but just wanted to live the outside life. Just had to put her to sleep a few years back because she was so old and had a large lump on her skull/ear that was causing extreme pain. Couldn't be fixed by vet without her dying under the knife due to heart murmur. Poor old crossed eyed girl lived her best life till the end tho. Miss her tons. Some animals just want to be outside. It's only natural.

      A had another thought that a lot of city people don't know. Livestock Guardian dogs are raised with the animals they have charge of. The sheep, goats turkeys, penguins, whatever are their pack, their family. To take them away from their family is cruel. They have been bred for thousands of years for this job. They will fight to the death to protect their "family". They love them. Just like Irish Setters are all red, Livestock Guardian dogs have been bred to have the thick undercoats to withstand the cold.

    • @ericlee3940
      @ericlee3940 Před 3 lety +53

    Livestock guardians are so unique. We have a female great pyrenees. We live in town and have no livestock but we DO have 4 little girls that she has definitely claimed as her, "flock". Blanche lived on a farm until she was 18 months old and her family sold the farm due to a divorce but I really think she would have failed as a full time livestock guardian eventually as she has quite a lot of non-breed typical anxiety and timidity. However, even our girl who's afraid of food dishes, cats, thunder, relocated furniture, and occasionally frozen peas turns into a pretty terrifying creature anytime anything makes her suspect that her girls may be at risk. She also has successfully mostly transitioned herself to being awake in the day and sleeping quietly pretty much all night as long as we make sure we have things set up in a way that she doesn't doubt the security of our home and family. That means she sleeps upstairs outside of our bedroom doors with the door at the top of the stairs closed to limit the area she feels she's protecting during that time and so she knows if anyone gets up, she'll be aware of it. We also never leave windows open at night as she apparently can't settle if the windows are open.

    We used to have a German Shepherd who would guard my little sister and I when we were outside playing. Her commitment was put to the test on several occasions, when the neighbor's two dogs would come barreling into our yard looking for a fight. They were known to go after people and horses around their property, and sometimes they got loose. Our German Shepherd put herself firmly between us and the neighbor's dogs, stopping them in their tracks. She wasn't interested in attacking them, she had one mission: to protect us. Her assertive and steadfast nature kept all of us from harm. It's been fifteen years since she died, but I will never forget her.

    Love this! I also have a livestock guardian dog. She comes inside occasionally, but mostly she prefers to be outside. She also supervises birds and is incredibly gentle with them. During the day, she is such a big goofy floof, but at night, she's so serious, like Toby. We always have to announce our presence at night or she gives out this terrifying bark/growl because she thinks we may be intruders. As soon as she realizes it's us, she says hello and carries on patrolling. They are really amazing dogs.

    I've got 4 dogs on my farm, they keep everything away until the cougar comes.. They tree or chase off raccoons, opossums, fox, coyotes, feral cats, weasels, and even owls and hawks on our unfenced, entirely free range, 40 acre farm. I've even seen the mutts pull a teenage black bear out of a tree last year. They are afraid of a cougar though, but hey, me too!! The cool thing is they have different barks that mean different things, learning the difference and tuning your body to wake at a specific bark or howl is important. Cougars are opportunistic and also like to stalk their prey but luckly it hasn't gotten my dogs, goats, pigs, cows, or very many fowl. I'm very proud of my farm dogs and I hope to get a couple Maremmas to add to our pack next year to help our 10 and 8 year old dogs out and give them much deserved rest. I really enjoy your video! How much I enjoyed to watch Toby 🐶 being on his night shift He’s such a good mannered dog , who also guard “his”
    farm and the various other species of quakers . So nice to see he has befriended Pavlos .
    All in all I think you’re a very lucky person to have this great dog. 👍🏻 Toby is also lucky to live on the farm and being loved and cared for..
    Great video, 😀

    Love watching them all munch on some pumpkin! My pup adores pumpkin. I definitely understand Toby's pickiness - my pup is the same way. Toby is a 100% good boy.
