  • For hundreds of years, Native Americans have used eagle feathers for religious practices and cultural purposes. In recognition of the significance of these feathers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service established the National Eagle Repository. The Repository stores and distributes bald and golden eagles found dead throughout the U.S. The eagles are then shipped to Native Americans enrolled in federally recognized tribes for use in religious ceremonies.

I hope that a very special eaglet named Meadow will end up providing feathers for Native American ceremonies. Lots watched her life unfold at Eagle Country until she fell out of the nest and passed away in rescue yesterday. She has beautiful young eagle feathers to give- as she was a couple of weeks away from branching.

Wasn't it Ben Franklin who wanted the turkey to be our national bird?

That’s a myth. He was writing to his daughter that the design of the eagle on the great seal of the US at the time looked more like a turkey. In typical Franklin humor, he then went into a tongue-in-cheek rant about how the turkey would be a better national bird. He never seriously advocated the turkey be the national bird.

Did you know that in Colorado when the state doesn’t give you eagle feather thru person directly they let the eagles choose if they can give you an eagle feather cause eagles are considered citizens of the state like people and eagles are who are most in charge of where and who their feathers go to. Normally in most authentic of settings it’s the eagle who chooses who feather goes to
