  • Strahan Coleman joins us in episode 6 of the Rule of Life podcast series on prayer. He gives rich insights into what it means to be a contemplative charismatic, the importance of embodiment and silence in prayer, the act of listening and journaling, and the practice of beholding God throughout the day. And he challenges our perspective of ordinary moments to be used as opportunities to commune with God, to shift our focus and sit with the awe of the invitation that’s extended to us to receive God’s loving gaze.
Strahan is a musician, writer, retreat leader, and spiritual director from Aotearoa New Zealand. And he recently released his first book, Beholding: Deepening Our Experience in God.

Hi Strahan, I played your song Mountain on top of Mt Sinai at dawn with many people who had traversed the 750 staircase in the dark to reach the summit for the dawn. It was a spiritual blessing. Although it is a controversial site as the bible places it elsewhere, it was EPIC, and your music was a perfect accompaniment to the moment.

Thank you for sharing both of your experiences, thoughts and beholdings in and of Christ. About 45 mins into your dialogue, you say something about words (paraphrasing now) at times not being enough to explain or to behold God. I love how that helps confirm why the Lord said to me (some years ago now) that while He's wanting to love us, our words can get in the way. May we continue to fall in love with our Lord and always behold Him - He who has chosen to live within us.

Absolutely loved this conversation. This is all about the topics God has been highlighting to me lately: union, contemplative prayer, etc. As a charismatic Christian, I have seen that many charismatics are often striving to "get into the presence of God" or have a tangible experience...but contemplation is beautiful knowing we are one with God & he lives in us being aware of his presence. When we are aware of his presence we can experience his manifest presence!

I definitely want to dig in and discover what the early Christians were on about with the three stages of spiritual formation that you referred to as purgation, illumination, and union.
This interview brings up more questions for me then answers but I love the river metaphor of going down the river but you have the responsibility to navigate whats in the river.
