- It’s lovely hearing Fonteyn talking about what she learned from Helpmann about stagecraft - about how she to get the audience’s attention when there was someone with great charisma as a partner.

mon plaisir :)
I always thought "The Fish Dive" was the most impressive move in ballet. More than the Prima Ballerina doing a multiple pirouette en Pointe.
Most people talk about how "Rudi and Margot" had a real fire-and-ice quality. There were no two dancers who could be more dissimilar. It's true. The two were exact opposites. And they had the most celebrated partnership in ballet history. But if there was a man in ballet who was like Fonteyn, someone who was her match--it was probably him, the man who by her own admission was her favorite partner... Sir "Bobby" Helpmann... He was a ballet dancer at a time when a man being a ballet dancer wasn't so appreciated... I always felt like he deserved the same sort of legacy that Margot got. Like George Balanchine, he may have been better at choreographing ballet than dancing it. And... he did choreograph it... That's why they were both knighted. There should be more to remember him.
fish dives struck me that way too. and he was a ballet dancer when there were so few other men with much technique. but fellow dancers, early on like Fonteyn, said said his impact was through his acting and stage presence
Great ultra vintage video, JH!!!🎉
yes, wonderful to see her so early in her career :)
He was Australian
