  • This week, China released a fresh list of 'renamed' places in Arunachal Pradesh. This was yet another attempt by Beijing to assert its claim over the north-eastern Indian state that for long China has claimed to be its "integral part". India called China's move to rename the places "senseless", saying, "Assigning invented names will not alter the reality that Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India."
The development brings into focus the fact that Arunachal Pradesh is, and has been, a core subject of India-China tensions. On this episode of In Our Defence, host Dev Goswami and defence expert and senior journalist Shiv Aroor trace the history of tensions between India and China over Arunachal Pradesh.
The two revisit the 1962 war, where India suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Chinese army, a defeat that was particularly humiliating in the Arunachal Pradesh, then known as the North-East Frontier Agency, sector. They discuss the lessons learnt from the war and where things stand today.
Also on the episode is a dive into why dealing with China - militarily or diplomatically - is such a challenge and, at times, frustrating. Tune in.

    Great episode as always.
Great fan of Shiv. As I have mentioned in my previous comment also, I have seen a Lallantop Rakhwale episode with Shiv and Sandeep Unnithan, what i strongly remember that, shiv praising Sandeep for his deep knowledge about submarines. That was a fantastic episode.
Bring Shiv and Sandeep together for a detailed episode on Submarine warfare and where is india standing.
Again thanks for the knowledge through these great podcasts..

Thanks for a very interesting podcast on Arunachal Pradesh and the India-China confrontation both in Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh- Galwan. Shiv Aroor shared many pertinent details about the Chinese provocation in Galwan and what really happened that set off the bloody conflict there. It would have also been interesting to know more about the border villages on the Indian side and whether that has been effective in containing Chinese ‘salami-slicing’ of Indian territory.

Shiv, 🎉🎉🎉 congratulations for the award. You truly deserve it. Your conversation is so insightful far beyond information. Even if I listen again and again, there is something that connects to another episode as if you knew all the time that, it's going to happen. So much foresight and understanding of how reality works. A knowing smile lights up your face every time and with it those sweet dimples. Love you for what you do. I have been definitely rewired which all those courses I did are dim in comparison. I won't hold myself in saying, even your voice and choice of words smoothens things beautifully. 😊

    Podcast request :
A detailed episode on PM Modi's spontaneous visit to Pakistan.
    *The rationale behind the visit
    *Security challenges
*Havings balls to land in Pakistan😅
*Assuming it was Pm`s firat term , was it naive of him to do something like this
    * The action plan if anything went wrong
And any other pointers you can think of.
Not much in extreme detail is supposedly available on the internet about this .

To sum up the emotive level in 1962 isto quotes German general of WW1 who stated " never before have lion's been lead by cowardly sheep" I believe Nehru was the sheep !

I studied in a university where they had a very large number of Chinese students, about 15 years ago. They were rude dirty smoking a lot, very aggressive on football field. Later on also when I encountered them few times at work, very different culturally. No one else I saw such stark differences

The Sikkim incident Shiv refers to at the end was in 1967 in Nathu La and Cho La.
As Shiv mentioned, its described in great detail in Probal Dasgupta's book Watershed 1967.
As one starts the climb from Tsongo to Nathu La, there's a board that describes the "skirmishes". Hopefully there will be a larger memorial built there one day.
