The Deadliest Wagon Train On The Oregon Trail

  • The Oregon Trail was one of the primary routes for American settlers heading from the Eastern States out to the Wild West. There was one major problem, though: the West wasn't actually wild, as it was already settled - by the Native people who had lived there for thousands of years. And though most wagon trains actually made the journey peacefully, once they began stopping to colonize the area rather than just pass through, resistance began - and with it came violence.
Between 1840 and 1860, 362 settlers and 426 indigenous people died in clashes along the Oregon Trail. But no incident claimed more lives than the Utter-Van Ornum Massacre - the deadliest wagon train on the Oregon Trail.

How do you think you would have done if you had to trek the Oregon Trail?

My ancestors came West in 1847 to Utah. There was one wagon train called the Applegate Company of 1853. There is a children's headstone dated 1853 in Salt Lake. It's obvious by date of deaths that 22 children ages 17-new born infants died along the way West, from Iowa to Utah. There were 22 wagons and 200 pioneers. That is a 10% death rate just among the children. The number of adults that died along the way are not mentioned. My 3rd great grandfather's first wife died in the Winter Quarters in 1847. It was no picnic going West. And then when they got to Utah; the Utah Indian wars with Utes took many more victims on both sides. My 3rd great grandfather James Russell Ivie, was slaughtered by Utes on 10 June, 1866, Scipio, Millard County, Utah.

I think the oregon trail is really overrated and admired in a wrong way. I mean, I also like reading about and watching movies about the Oregon trail, it's romantic and adventurous. But at the same time, it should've been something like injury, sickness, fights, battle, sickness, sickness, diahrrea, injury, and miscarriage...

Seems the people went to cannibalism pretty quickly. I know you can survive for a while, not forever, if you can get water. And you're telling me they were unable to forage for field mice or something like that. How green were these greenhorns? Nope, first sign of trouble eat a relative. It's like it was there all the time and they just needed an excuse

Relatives were already dead when they resorted to cannibalism. It’s not like they killed people just to eat them.
So they foraged through the land and the very first thing they found was 100 lbs of meat.
