    Hey Outdoorsportsman thanks for the info. I just bought and old 20' Starcraft with the 5.7 and cobra stern drive that I know nothing about. the engine was froze up so I pulled the outdrive and engine out and am in the process of replacing the engine. I bought a water pump kit and thought I would have to drop the lower end and was pleasantly surprised to see the way it's really done. THANK YOU . I don't know why the Cobra has such a bad name, looks like they had the rite idea to me. I have subscribed to your channel and hope you continue to make these videos on the OMC set up.

    Thanks for this video. A question that I can’t seem to find the answer to anywhere - is there supposed to be water coming out of the housing in normal operation? I’m about to change the impeller and housing, and right now there’s a lot of water coming out of it. So I’m thinking there’s supposed to be less or even none. I’ve got the new kit ready to go, but before I install it, I’m wondering what is normal. Is there any water flow that should come out of the housing, and if so, how much , and from where? If you can help me understand this I would greatly appreciate it, so that I know what to look for.

    • @theoutdoorsportsmen
      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 7 lety +3

      +Rick Hammer Rick, they normally don't use a gasket on the back of the plate, but if the surface on the upper gear case is pitted or has been coroaded I will then use some silicone gasket maker to just help seal the back of the plate. Thanks for your comments and question.

    Hi, great video and I watched it a couple of times question that I have is that if you look at the rotation of the impeller when you take it off the boat and the impeller blades in the stainless steel housing and then put the new impeller on the boss and have the housing all greased up and put it on and then turn it to the right as you’re facing it that would put the impeller blades in the other direction. Can you check that out because the physics of it show the right hand direction rotation of the cover gives you the wrong direction of the blade on the impeller. Thank you so so much. Have a great day. Look forward to hearing from you Michael V.

    • @theoutdoorsportsmen
      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 25 dny +1

      Hey Mike, thanks for watching. I'm gonna check on that.I just can't this evening work it out in my head, I think the correct answer is, it doesn't matter.Because as you go forward the blades on the water pump will change. I've always put my housing on and twisted it clockwise as I installed the housing over the water pump. But I will check that out for you and get back to you tomorrow for sure
      Jim

    • @theoutdoorsportsmen
      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 23 dny

    • @theoutdoorsportsmen
      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 3 lety

      You may have a closed intake at the lower unit, the hose going to the motor could be clogged or as you said might be a gasket issue at the water pump housing. Also check the thermostat. Hope this helps let us know if we can help further

      John the temperature gauge is a good way to tell. Also you could have a water pressure gauge installed or use ear muffs and run the motor at home on a hose and see if water is coming out the exhaust.

      Not to worry Chris We have found out through service that most of the time the pieces just pass small enough to wash out through the engine after you replace it with a new impela It should not be a problem if it is then you could try pulling the water inlet hose from the motor and back flushing with a hose. • @theoutdoorsportsmen
      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 2 lety

      Ok first you will need to purge your fuel lines of any water and change fuel filters. Make sure that any water that is left in the gas tank is gone. I would use a fuel dryer additive. The best way to clean rhe injectors is to remove them and use carb cleaner. You may be able to do this without removing them. It's worth trying. It may take running a take or two of fuel to completely get it all.Good luck. Thanks for watching

    • @theoutdoorsportsmen
      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 2 lety +1

    My 1988 3.0 omc cobra. I thought I had a prop slip issue. As driving the boat the engine revs up but only goes 15kms/hr.
    It feels like it could be clogged internally perhaps as its not a prop slip and feels the same way as of seaweed was blocking the intake ports.

    • @theoutdoorsportsmen
      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 6 lety +1

      That would be the first thing I would check is the hub on the prop. You also might look at something clogging the exhaust as if enough exhaust does not escape from the motor back pressure can build up also causing this. But it sure sounds like a spun hub though. Hope this helps and thanks for your question

I can blow air through the system from sterndrive to thermostat. Just removed the outdrive to check for obstructions, or other sources. What am I missing to cause a no pump condition? If I use the muffs with forced water from the tap, it will circulate water and stay cool. in the lake or river no water.

      @theoutdoorsportsmen  Před 6 lety +1

      Be sure to make sure that there is a tight seal where the water pump housing and base meet. Also check the steel ware plate and gasket area, the smallest split or piece of gasket missing can cause water to bypass the pump .Make sure that you also have a good seal around the water tube area where it connects to the water pump housing. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question

    I need to replace the starter on a 1981 Viking deck boat with a gm 5.0 v-8 OMC but can't locate the original starter numbers to buy one. Everyone I see on line is mercruiser or the wrong OMC sterndrive. Anyone had one of these and know what i need to ask for? thanks much

      I know I'm a little late with a response but Chev's are notorious for a new starter making terrible noises. It's because the tolerances on the block and the starter nose. I've always tried to reuse the original nose even if i had to get the bushing replaced. Hard getting to the starter and to mess with starter shims suck.

    Hey Jim how's about 1997 OMC Cobra SX? Will that still require the same impeller?

    Do you know if it’s in the same place on a 1990 Yamaha ebbtide stern drive inboard outboard

      For a long time Yamaha put the water pumps in the same place as omc did an easy way to check is just a take off that back plastic cover on the back of the outdrive and check and see if the water pump housing is there if not than they installed it into the bottom half of the lower unit in which case you just have to remove the lower unit to replace it.
