  • amzn.to/24QmebK The Azden SMX-30 provides the best of both worlds. It's a powered on-camera mic that gives you the option to record in Stereo or mono depending on the situation. On top of that, it fits in ruffly the same form factor as a Rode video mic pro.
I can only think of a handful of reasons to record in stereo, but it is extremely handy to be able to switch when those sorts of applications come up.
Overall, at a price of $249, the SMX-30 is a pretty decent value for the price with lots of features and options that make it the Macgyver of on-camera microphones.
You can find the SMX-30 here: amzn.to/24QmebK
and it's little brother the SMX-15 here: amzn.to/1VTZ0wi

I wonder how the quality of audio compares to the mke440. I'm also interested in the new smx 30v version

Hey thanks for good info. I just have one question. If the mic is set on stereo are both mic's active, the stereo one and the shotgun or does it switch between them so only one is active at a time?

    Compared to Audio-Technica AT8024?

That auto on battery and off would be a huge deal. I have the Seinheiser MKE 400 and always either forget to turn it on or off! I've missed important sound or have run out of battery so many times! Are you telling me if I bought this I will never have to turn it on and off and will automatically turn on and off like my Sony Hot Shoe microphones every time I turn on and turn off the camera? I now wonder how does the 20+ boost compare to the Vid Mic Pro. That Mic is great.. except for the on, off button again and the battery compartment!

+RealWorld Endo The battery compartment works great on the Azden, and yes the on off works as expected, I didn't notice any kind of battery drain by having in auto. It may get drained after a few week of no use compared to actually turning it off, because I imagine they must have some kind of live circuit to operate the relay. But for me it was great, never had to remember to turn it on or off, which is great if your out doing vlogs and things where you typically aren't wearing headphones and monitoring it yourself. the +20 isn't as hot as the videomic pro, but I was getting a bit more low end compared to the video mic pro

+DevoCut Perfect! Thank you for your feedback! The Vlog use is what this would be perfect for. No need to turn on and off and +20 boost would be very helpful for the typical Canon DSLR! :)

+Christian Hubbard I haven't gotten my hands on that mic yet, the only one we tested against was the videomicpro, though the micro is so cheap I've been considering getting it for when I use my phone to record.
