Hey guys!! Here's the original Spider-man (2002) starring Tobey McGuire!! I grew up with this movie and haven't watched it in sooooo long so it was such a treat. Growing up with it along with the amount of memes surrounding it (I'm a bit annoying in the beginning but I PROMISE IT CHILLS OUT SO SORRY ABOUT THAT LOL) makes it that much more enjoyable|
And now that I'm watching it as an adult it gives me a new perspective and do I have some OPINIONS about it... you'll see at the end hehe.
But I do love this movie, and Tobey will always be my favorite Spider-Man ❤

I’ve always favored the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man! I am so happy you’re reacting to the old trilogy!
Hey you are so beautiful! @Vkunia
If you like the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, I HIGHLY recommend his Evil Dead movies. They were the films that made him breakout in Hollywood. They’re a mix of funny and scary, just like the Spiderman films (Evil Dead’s Star Bruce Campbell actually cameos in each Spidey film)
I’ve always the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man! I am so happy you’re reacting to the old trilogy!
Willem Defoe's performance as Norman/Green Goblin is god tier! 'iconic' is an understatement
He managed to creep me out as Green Goblin without the mask on. That is god-tier performance
It's good. But I think Jennifer Hudson would make a much better Green Goblin.
People overuse the word "iconic"

When Peter walks away from Mary Jane, it's not heartless. It's heartful. It's a recurring theme with superheroes. Would you really want to put someone you're in love with in jeapordy? I wouldn't. That scene still makes me a little emotional.
But that doesn't matter anyway. She's put in danger regularly to get Peter's attention so he'll get Spider-Man's attention.
@@KEVMAN7987 Yes but in that moment Peter had to endure repeated attacks by Green Goblin on Aunt May and MJ as a result of him knowing his identity. So it makes sense at that time he was afraid....
However spiderman 2 takes place 2 years later where he hopes he can pursue a relationship with MJ ( he takes inspiration from octavius)
Well it doesn't really matter because the villain will still go after your friends and family. So no matter what, MJ and Harry will always be in danger just being associated with him.
Yeah, brilliant, break her heart instead. It’s as if Peter knows more bad guys with superpowers will show up. Because there’s no reason for him to fear normal burglers etc finding out Spider-Mans true identity. It was a stupid and heartless decision.
@@Isildur94 A normal burglar could easily kill MJ when Peter wasn't around. Peter can't be around all the time. And calling it heartless suggests that he is obligated to date her. But no one is obligated to date anyone.
25:50 A hidden detail in this scene shows that Peter was using a green shirt with a purple tie which are the colors of the Green Goblin and Norman was using a blue shirt with a red tie which are the colors of Spider-Man.
Thanks for your help with that factoid! I'm gonna focus on that from now on when rewatching that scene.
When Aunt Mae comes to Peter’s room, and ask him what all that noise was… he claims to have been exercising and he’s shirtless and there’s stringy white stuff all over the room…
😏😉
real good foreshadowing right there and ironic too
Fun fact: Willem Dafoe insisted on doing all his own stunts, so that is actually him in the Goblin suit. He had the costume designers remake the suit to fit him specically.
Except he can be seen not talking sometimes, some lines were added later.
@@10thdoctor15 that’s true but it could of been because the masks shadow hides his mouth

Mary Jane: *FALLS TO DEATH*
Vkunia: "I love her shoes!"
This might be my most favorite reaction/commentary yet! "What if when he rescued her, he finds out she has bad breath and just leaves her somewhere?" LOL 😅
I agree 😆🤣😂😄
I believe Vikunia just made a meme.
From now on, anytime somebody plunges screaming to potential death, remember to say: "I love xxx shoes"
😄😄😄
I understand your opinion of Peter denying MJ. He does really love her, he just saw what happened when the Green Goblin found out his identity and what MJ meant to him. So in his mind, he wants to keep her safe, and he thinks this is the best option. But romance wise, yes it sucks
Even logic wise, it sucks. So she's Peter Parker's friend instead of girlfriend. When a villain finds out who Spider-Man is and that he has no girlfriend, who do you think they'll go after next? Okay, yes, Aunt May....but then MJ after that. The point is Peter isn't protecting MJ by staying away from her romantically; he's just making them both miserable.
@@Tantalus010 True, but they would be miserable either way. Peter wouldn’t have enough personal time for MJ. If they’re on a romantic date and there’s a hostage situation going down near that area. Peter hears cop cars all around the area and MJ knowing how much of a good person Peter is, would rather go save that hostage rather than sit with MJ and let the hostage die. MJ would be tired of being a damsel in distress from all the villains coming after her every 24/7. If Peter stops being Spider-Man he’ll be more miserable than MJ because the fact that he can’t help people would rip him apart. Peter is not Superman or Flash because unlike them they can stop crime all around the world and arrive on time. Spider-Man seems like an accurate superhero because he can’t save everyone at once like most heroes.
Say what you will about Mary Jane Watsons in these movies but Kirsten Dunst gave it her all throughout the Raimi movies
Yeah. I feel like that’s something that’s been missing in the MCU. They’ve kinda thrown away the whole point of the costume, and having a secret identity.
@@Kayoss13212 Well, a bunch of them get their powers from their suits like Iron Man, the webslingers for Spider Man, Falcons flying suit, Ant Mans suit, Black Panther's suit while on the other hand Scarlet Witch is often in more normal clothes most of the time. A bunch of them wear a leather looking kinda suits but that's been a common light armor for thousands of years to protect them mostly from cuts and scratches.

"Kids were such bullies back then!" I hate to tell you, but kids were bullies long before then, and they still are today.
"That's horrific"
The director of these Spiderman movies would take that as a glowing compliment, given his history of making horror movies.
Yep. Anything horrific in a Raimi movie is meant to be that way.
We need a Drag Me To Hell reaction on this channel.
A lot of people missed Lucy Lawless saying, "A guy with 8 hands... sounds hot."
Hahhahaha
Most impressive scene is him catching the food, took over 150 takes but it was all Tobey Maguire actually catching it.
I swear, every time people quote that fact, the number of takes gets higher
Wait. 150? Madkatz you’re right, that does seem higher.
I heard it was 186 and they had to do it over so many times because Tobey would do it too perfectly and it just looked unrealistic.

"He could've become a villain easily. I'm surprised he didn't become one." - Vkunia
- I read somewhere that both Peter Parker / Spiderman and Green Goblin / Norman Osborn are meant to represent two sides of the same coin when it comes to having special abilities. When someone gets a special ability or power, the question then becomes "do they use it responsibly? (the whole Uncle Ben thing). The person then comes to a fork in the road. They can either choose to use it for themselves and only their own personal betterment (the Osborn Path / being like Goblin) or use it to help others (the Parker Path - being like Spidey).
The aforementioned fork in the road is where the person's views of others and their relationship to others determines which path they may decide to choose. Goblin chooses his way because he thinks little of other people and views himself as better than others. Parker chooses his way because he values other people and cares about them. (The fork in the road for these characters is what they decide to do once they get theri powers. The fork in the road for the audience is two scenes - for Spiderman, it's the Uncle Ben "with great power comes great responsibility line," while for Goblin, it's his speech he makes to Spiderman on a rooftop to try and convince Spiderman to join him, the "in spite of everything you've done for them, eventually they will hate you" speech.)
Ol' Willem definitely killed it in this movie, and he didn't lose a beat in "No Way Home." If anything, he was even better😁
It’s amazing how even after all those years he managed to reprise that role like never before
This film is the reason how I got into the superhero genre since I was 2 and Sam Raimi’s trilogy still holds up. :) 🕷🕸❤️

The producer's messed up 3.
@@The3rdGunman you definitely got me there. Mine was X-men when I was an early teen.
Peter rejecting Mary Jane at the end hurt Peter just as much as it did her. From Mary Jane's point of view it was a heartless move, the way Peter left her there. To Peter he was protecting Mary Jane, he knew the rejection would hurt her, but it would also keep her alive.
I think with his Spider-man identity, he was less reliant on Mary Jane's love and more self reliant. So he was able to give it up.
The shot at 9:13 is an actual take, no CGI was used. I can't remember the exact number off the top of my head, but it took them like 150+ tries to get it right.
156 takes
4,815,162,342 takes.
17:21 I love that you picked up that she's surrounded by abusive men. Even Harry snapped at her and only had her around to impress his father. But the one who's always rooting for her. The one who always makes her feel better was Peter.
The part that always makes me tear up is when the New Yorkers say “You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!” Since this film came out shortly after the September 11th attacks it is almost a love letter to the spirit of New York
*MJ falling*
V: "omg I love her shoes!"
I spit my drink out laughing😂
INTERESTING FACT: the scene with all the New Yorkers coming to Spider-Man’s aid at the bridge and throwing stuff at Goblin was actually written and filmed in response to the 9/11 attacks, to show the unbreakable spirit of the American people. After learning this, that scene always chokes me up when I see it.
"At least he's not a snitch." I like to think that deep down, Jameson is a good guy who wouldn't hesitate for a second to protect Peter. Although, I'm sure if you asked him, he would've said he just didn't want anyone else getting pictures of Spider-man.
He 100% is a good guy, just an asshole. The reason why he hates and distrusts Spider-man so much, is cause his family was killed by masked men. People that do good, don't hide from the repercussions of their actions.
"I need to look up the lore as to why he had no say." It's not lore, it's business. Clearly, he had sold pieces of the company to investors to raise money, but he failed to keep a majority stake (i.e. more than 50%). Therefore it's within the power of those investors (as represented by the Board of Directors) to agree to fire him as CEO.
Yup. Unlike Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark, who had controlling interests in their companies, Osborn evidently had NO real say in his own business. He was being bossed around by that mustached guy the whole time.
Why did she lore?
Side note: MJ and Flash weren't engaged, she was referring to having his class ring, typical highschool romantic gesture.
Spider-Man has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters of all time. I grew up with this movie too, and it helped to initiate the fandom of comic book movies that we have today.
glad you said helped because people tend to forget the other bunch of movies and tv shows that helped😅

J K Simmons' portrayal of JJJ is absolutely perfect. All the grouch but with an added touch of humor. He even looks the part exactly.
This particular trilogy did a great job at staying true to the comics, and whatever changes they made (i.e. trading webbing gauntlets for organic webs) were either good changes, or at least not terrible ones.
Yup the best live action Spider-Man franchise
not to mention his integrity in pretending he doesn't know about peter
20:32 "Billy woke up this morning and chose death".
Still my favorite Spider-Man movie, not just for the actors, characters, story, action, and score, but the meme, this movie is the king of memes
Goblin wasn’t aware of Parker’s Spidey sense.
A Spider-Man binge is like re-visiting teachers you used to have. The nostalgia feels so good!
The Raimi Spidermans are the best ones. Love seeing the cameos of Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless (the punk chick) since Raimi was a producer Xena Warrior Princess.

This is one of my favorite super hero movies of all time. Willem Defoe is such an incredible actor and made the Goblin so terrifying. Tobey McGuire is my Spider-Man as awesome as Tom Holland is in the role. I hope you do a reaction video for the next Spider-Man movies in the series.
She uploaded Spiderman 2 today!
I don't care what anyone says, the opening credits with Danny Elfman's orchestral pieces are what defined these movies. Pure masterpieces and works of art.
Always coming back, feels like watching a movie with a friend. LOL!
And this is a goooooood one! hahaha
Yeah watching reactions is super fun
The tragedy that Peter goes through in his life, the fact that he can keep doing what he does is astounding. Honestly probably the only more tragic story of a comic character that comes close to spidey is Magneto but unlike Peter he let his grief and anger turn into hate for mankind and used his powers for evil. Peters morals are dictated by his Uncles dying last words so he uses his powers as responsibly as he can.
That reflex lunch scene....that was really Tobey Maguire. It took like 160 takes to master.
"Does that mean it'd be really hard for him to hold hands" 😂😂😂 that caught me off guard
If anything, it's going to be easier to hold hands (or anything else) but harder to let go.
No other person could ever play J Jonah Jameson, JK Simmons was absolutely perfect for this role and he should have one an Oscar for it. There is a reason he was brought back for Spider-Man No Way Home. Perfection in acting.
I do think Liam Neeson would make just as good a Jameson.
I believe that this movie proves that Willem Defoe is one of the greatest actors of our time. He is great is everything but his Norman/Gobiln is just fantastic. And it gets better with time...
Even better than Heath Ledgers Joker
"How does he not feel that?!" When Kirsten Dunst is standing in front of you, that has a tendency to draw your attention away from other things.
"he just broke bro code"
it's cool that you understand the bro code!
If Spiderman was a Pokemon:
Type: Bug
Ability:Agile-Evasivesness is increased when affected by a stats are lowered.
Move Set: Sticky Web (Bug), First Impression (Bug), Bounce (Flying), and Super Power (Fighting)
Stan Lee wanted to make a superhero who would have hardships and not always have the “happy ever after” like most heroes do. So he created Spider-Man and had him go through really rough hardships and not get the girl like most heroes do
Oooh I hope you didn't miss during 'the fruit cake' scene that Norman said "work was murder"... 'cause his work literally was... killing Spider-Man :D
It was a hilarious line
32:32 I'm pretty sure Goblin was ready to kill Spider-Man, but also himself in the process with the glider. He went in for a hug and everything.
Willem Defoe killed it alright. And about 20 years later he still did; hadn’t missed a step!
I only wish they had shown him more as the Goblin.
@@trhansen3244 it’s amazing that despite him having soo little screen time he managed to nail the role soo well, he definitely could return for more Spider-Man movies

This is the PERFECT moment due suggest to you a little movie called ARACHNOPHOBIA. and while we are at it: EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS too.
30:10 In the comics Goblin threw Peter's first love Gwen Stacy off a bridge but when Peter caught her leg with a web the whiplash broke her neck.
24:00 The famous kiss scene during which Tobey Mcguire almost "drowned", no joke -
I don't think that was really Tobey. Obviously, it was a stuntman.
Something TASM and MCU didn't have is this kind of New York. In Raimi's New York is a character of its own, not just a background for the villain and hero to fight in.
I haven't read the comic books so might not be the best person to explain it, but I believe that they could have "sacked" Norman Osborn from being a CEO of Oscorp if the board of the company had more than 50% of shares all together. If he had less than half and they all voted against him, than it was possible. He would still own his shares and would be owed dividend income but would no longer be a CEO.
Yep. You don't really need to have read the comics to explain that, it's just a fact about how businesses work in real life. I'd still recommend reading the comics because they're pretty good, but you already had the knowledge you needed to drop.
I remember when this movie hit theaters. Toby will always be spider man to me
Same here brother
I loved this movie as a kid, I watched it to death on VHS, but god damn there are so many jumpscares for this kinda movie, scarred me for years lol. Still holds up now though, still one of the best superhero movies even now.
It makes sense when you know that Sam Raimi, the creator of these movies, was a horror movie creator.
Willem Dafoe is great in this movie. He's transcendent in No Way Home. He's so much better without the mask it's mind-blowing.
No Way Out is a very good film.
He knew exactly how to portray such a character in the most convincing manner
Years ago, I watched a movie called “My Name is Bruce.” Bruce Campbell was there for a Q&A afterwards where, among other things, he explained how he was the most important character in each of these Spider Man movies. He’s only in one scene for each movie, but it’s always a significant moment..
That’s because he was supposed to be Mysterio in Spider-Man 4
MJ's falling to her death, and you say, "I LOVE HER SHOES!" lol. THAT had me rolling!
Same here, she’s fucking goofy lol
MJ is falling to her death, and your like "Oh my god I love her shoes!"
Willem Dafoe was actually given "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" to read to prepare for the role, most notably the mirror scene
I grew up watching Tobey Maguire Spider-Man. He was the only Marvel hero I'd watch when I was a kid until I turned 13, and that's when I started to like others.
This movie was my childhood. It's one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. Tobey Maguire will always be my favorite Spider-Man.
Fun trivia fact: in the original Spiderman origin story, waaaay back in the spring of 1962, the wrestler that Peter challenged was "Crusher Hogan," before "Hulk Hogan" was even a wrestler. He was nine years old at the time.
So Hulk Hogan takes the first part of his name from the Hulk comics and the second part of his name from the Spider-man comics.
@@greywolf7577 Vince McMahon Sr named him Hogan because he wanted the Hulkster to have an Irish persona, for some reason. "Hulk" was given because a talk show host noted that Terry was bigger than Lou Ferrigno, who was the Hulk on TV. The combination is just a happy coincidence.
I'm old enough to have read the original SM comics back in the 60s as they came out. This film, I think, reflects the SM of that time, with all the angst and adolescent problems of a teen (no money, no job, no girlfriend, etc) so I agree with you that whilst the other actors do an excellent job with the stories they are given, Maguire is the most authentic and hence best. Another great review - remember if we didn't like your opinion we wouldn't come back for more!
Exactly what I think, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man is the most comic accurate take on the story
i think a key thing here...spiderman became a hero through anger. He is seen as the pure hero, but the wrestling scene shows he knows what it was like to be lost to darkness. and the weight behind it. he embodies light to fix the mistake he made
Fun fact: the actor of the bully is a huge nerd, and have played D&D since childhood.
“How does he not feel that?” Spiders can be surprisingly light-footed. I’m not scared of them, so I have picked up jumping spiders and let them crawl around on my hand. You can barely feel them.
The main problem with fruitcake is that its density is akin to that of a neutron star. It's also a little known fact that the army field manual has instructions for building emergency shelters using fruitcake bricks and powdered oatmeal as mortar.

I just remember watching this in the theaters after 9/11 happened, and it was so bittersweet to see New York,
The little thing about the New Yorkers banding together to help was poignant, even if a bit over the top. This was a good OG spiderman movie and holds up still.

Love the scene when MJ puts her hand to her mouth and the look she gives Peter after they kiss, just before he says I will always be your friend. I think she suspects !

At least she remembered his upside down kiss.
In case someone hasn't mentioned it the reason Norman (Green Goblin) was sacked from his own company is because it was a public company and at least 51% of the company shares were not his. When you form a business it is 100% yours and is considered a private company, if you later decide to sell shares in your company to gain some extra cash then the company becomes a public company, selling shares is also known as "floating a company", when you sell shares you then need to form a board of directors whereby other shareholders get a say in how the company operates.
If you are ever stupid enough to sell more than 51% of the company - as Norman must have - then you run the risk of being kicked out of it by the other shareholders if they don't like how you run it. You will get paid the full value of your shares though. Public companies are democracies and majority rules.
He can't be kicked off the Board of Directors. They can't force him to sell his shares. All they can do is fire him as CEO.
