We actually price it by bush. We usually do $7-$20 a bush. It just depends on how many there are and how big the bushes are and what kind of terrain they are on and etc.
$10 a bush for bushes like the size that you are doing on this video. A little less for smaller ones and a little more for bigger ones. For hedges, $1 for knee-high, $2 for waist-high, $3 for shoulder-high times the linear feet of the length of the hedge. Occasionally you will get a taller hedge that would $4 a linear foot. I am currently using a Echo hedge trimmer.
I have the Stihl HS56. I just finished trimming several 8 foot tall burning bushes today. When trimming up over the top of these I run the trimmer upside down. The non turning handle never stopped me or limited me ever and I’m just a homeowner doing this periodically as needed. I had to carve out some dead branches that were wider than the acceptable range. Ran the trimmer rocking the edge to carve out a vee in the branch and in no time I’m through. Never owned an Echo product and have no opinion.
I would choose Echo if I used gas hedge trimmers. But at some properties(residential & commercial) I can do hedge trimming as early as 6am because I use the Ego Ht-2410 & the Ego HTA-2000. No noise,no complaints lol. So gas hedge trimmers are king but battery does have it's place.
I just bought a redmax CHTZ2460 hedge trimmer for $80 and this thing cuts like butter, very sharp and crispy. I've used all of the top brand hedge trimmers and I also own a stihl 131 kombi with articulating hedge trimmer attachment and the cut quality of this redmax is right there at the top with the stihl and echo, if not better. This thing is well used and still runs good and cuts super crisp!
I've got one of those Stihl HL100K extended reach and pivoting hedgetrimmers. I've had it since 2013 but it looks new, I take really good care of everything. I used to work at an equipment dealer so naturally I still service my own equipment. I love almost everything about Stihl. The power and performance, ergonomics and serviceability. All their designs are really modular and super easy to work on. I've always found their prices on parts to be much better.
I have been trimming shrubs for about 15 years commercially between these two brands, and I lean heavily towards Echo. They just always seem more powerful, and easier to Maneuver. Stihl's hand held trimmers for very tiny shrubs, freaking rock though It's like carving a turkey. I also like Stihl extension trimmers over the competition. That's just my opinion though. Always charge by the job, never hours. The last thing you should do is have a customer scare themselves by over guesstimating. The price does depend on the quality of the customer though for me.
If you buy the STIhl hedge trimmer it Hass to be the single sided R series not the T series The R Has that sticker blade that just cuts phenomenal and they’re now 700 bucks ouch
Hey Guys! Do you do any Selective Pruning after your done taking off the new growth? I always have have my hand pruners in my pocket and when I’m done I will reach into the bush and trim out some branches so the sunlight can get into the bush. Helps prevent the dead stuff on the inside and just the green on the out side!
Depends I guess on what kinda bush, how tall, but normally 5 to 20 bucks per Bush.. I really haven't perfected cost effective way to charge. I just tell the customer what it is and if they don't like it I try to negotiate. It really helps me gauge what the customer expectations are

Echo #1, my Stihl spent more time in the shop then trimming. I've had a Stihl blower, chain saw, line trimmer, hedge trimmer and all have stranded me on jobs more times than I can remember except the line trimmer which has been a jewel, everything else I've switched to Echo. Echo is cold natured though needs a couple minutes to warm up.

I have an echo blower, starts easy every time every year. My Stihls are a pain in the rear damn near everytime and need new carbs too often. Echo for me. I however have a Shindaiwa string trimmer that is going strong and 12 years old!
Little update, earlier this year I switched to Husqvarna, I now use the 122HD60 & the 522HDR75X. More comfortable to use and quieter in my opinion! Nice having the Stihl's as a backup though! Would never get away with charging US prices in the UK. You're either very generous or we're tight as arse holes!

STIHL + ECHO Really can't go wrong with either brand in the commercial or business world. I've invested in the milwaukee m18 series carbon fiber lightweight equipment. I only use 2 stroke gas in my 2 smoke CR500R braaaaap life.

Bid is the way to go. People freak on T&M jobs in PA too. Give a nice written proposal on letterhead outlining everything and the scope. What I do is figure production rates of cubic ft that a man can achieve in an hour of pruning, and then multiply that number by my direct and indirect costs; lastly, I add in a profit margin.
I start mine when I park the truck. Walk around to look at everything again and by the time I get back to the truck its warm and good to go. It always aggravated me that they bog on start up until being warm but now its routine.
I charge by the hr, but we also go over them and fine tune with hand scissors ✂️ For quick jobs and lower grade we just go over with the trimmers clean up and leave for a decent price 🙃
Both the stihl and echo are equally great. The main difference is weight and price. Stihl is more expensive because the lighter materials used. They are lighter and more balanced for extending use.
I use a Stihl personally. I had issues with mine hanging the throttle after a year old. Later it got loosened up. Had to rebuild the carburetor after 4 years. Mine doesn't have the round tip like in the video. I had to sharpen & take the slack out of the bar. They don't like cheap gas! It's better to run the premixed gas in the liter cans if you can afford it.

Long reach hede trimmers are my favourite purely because there safer to use as the blades are far away from your hand. However I do use a handheld as well just for the awkward jobs
Dude try a 58-volt Echo Hedge Trimmer the light and they are quiet and you can do a Catch job in the morning without waking up the neighbours once you try it you will never want to go back to a gas trimmer again
The Stihl hs56 does not even have a protective cover on the front handle, so the fingers are very exposed to the blade. When I look at it, it seems a little scary.
Know this is an older video but I usually price per shrub/bush by the size and how much overgrowth. I only give them the quote, I never tell them what I'm shooting for as an hourly rate for the same reason the other guy gave. I don't have either of these models but I do have one with the rotating handle and it's a back and arm saver for sure.
Depends on the situation. Too many variables. $65 just to have the machine in my hand, then from there on up. I use a poulan pro (pp2822) as my prior machine was stolen out of truck bed approx 4 years ago. All my tools basically live outside in the elements and by some standards are abused severely. Case point it got left in a wheelbarrow during a nasty storm wheelbarrow filled up so did the trimmer. Didn't need it for a week or so I bet you can imagine what happened. Only thing that has been replaced on it in all that time is a primer bulb and that was just done about one week ago! I think in the end the reason why I have a PP is because of my more expensive unit being taken from me buy an unsavory individual if you get my meaning.
I’ve been a Stihl fan for a while but I’ve been disappointed with how hard it is to get parts for them. Always have to go to the dealer. I’m currently using echo and stihl aswell as Husqvarna, There all really good brands my favourite is echo, it depends on the size of the job, if it’s a small job it’s hourly rate but set price for bigger jobs like hedge trimming!
I would go for the Stihl just because that's what I have the best dealer support for and parts as well as the HS46 I am looking at is the lightest I have ever felt. Currently running a cheaper 4-stroke which is like holding a box of bricks its so heavy and a somewhat lighter 2-stroke which is good for diosmas etc. which need the faster tip speed. We charge by the job for hedging too.
I just bid a job flat out. I look at tools required, time, risk, and disposal. I've had jobs where I had to trim with a Stihl kombi trimmer with an extension.. if you are done in 20 minutes vs 3 and a half hours. What do you want to make in an hour?

Not sure about the newer Echo trimmers but the older models were unforgiving with unwanted vibration. Switched to Stihl years ago. So much smoother running than the competition. I would be interested in trying a new Echo though. I have multiple trimmers that I use. Small to the combi unit with extension and trimmer head. Love the articulating head of the combi. Great for fall clean ups of hostas, day lilies and ornamental grasses. No more bending over to cut😃😃. As for pricing, ALWAYS by the job!!! My minimum is 200$. I won’t even think about trimming a few shrubs for 75$ anymore. Qualify the customer over the phone. I like to get at least 150$/hour or more. Any ladder work is an additional 100$. Yesterday was one large overgrown yew hedge, three medium yews, two overgrown hydrangeas, one overgrown dogwood shrub and one large zebra grass. 2.5 hours/650$. 6x10 utility trailer 3/4 full. Customer was very happy with the results. Me too😃😃. If you guys n gals haven’t raised your prices it’s about time you do!!!! So much work out there!! Shrubby 😃

I've got a hc152 echo nothing to fancy since I rarely do trimming but occasionally do it, but my only complaint with it is I think it could be built better mainly talking about the plastic handle. I've replaced 2 handles on the unit since I bought it. Definitely a pain to do, but other than that love my echo equipment and will he more than likely switching to all echo for next year. Both are great but where the difference lies is the weight for me. If I’m trimming for a few hours which I used to do alot than the Stihl is the far better choice.
This is exactly how i charge also. I dont tell the customer, but in my head i time and calculate by the hour. If you use these prices per bush(6,9,10,15), it comes out to about 100.00 an hour.
Just starting out, so my local dealer is recommending the Stihl HS 56. Some of the cities in my area have restrictions against gas powered.... so I have tried the ECO battery powered unit, which seems to work very well.... aside from the 30-40 minute battery life.
Do battery powered hedge trimmers or even other battery powered ope have a place in a professional lawn care company? I hardly see any guys using battery ope on the job. Some battery units I have used perform quite well.
Brian, next time you do a competition with hedge trimmers, you should also include a battery powered unit. Stihl makes several good ones. They are lighter, cleaner air quality and do a great job.
Hmm both good units. I'm thinking about replacing my crappy black and decker and going for a Stihl HS 45. More of my family members want me to do some landscaping for them so later this year I may throw down for a stihl. Both great units, however, I give the win to Stihl for its weight and how it does on fine trimming.
I'm a fan of charging per job. It's easy when I have apartments or commercial jobs and they can't verify my hours. I can't stand being watched and questioned about "were you really here for THAAAAT long" when i charge per hr.
If they get mulch after Hedges ill with mow too I'll throw it in for one hundred but if they just want hedge only it's two hundred and up all depends on how often I am paid to come on property basically I need a dollar a minute no matter what is the bottom line.. Plus I basically include mow with hedge and possible gutter all package price to keep busy year round great video

I agree. Even with a little extra weight it seems more ergonomic. Even the detachable Stihl unit was nice. Not too long.
Ive used the kombi with the adjustable pole pruner for ever but i gotta get a dedicated hedge trimmer

It’s not a rough start up, you have to let them warm up before pulling the trigger. I believe they recommend a minute and a half warm up time.

As a non pro, if both products are on a par it's the weight that matters, over a period of time the Echo can get real heavy.

My only gripe on this unit is the exhaust as its faces left side (right handed) so I always smell like nasty fuel 🤣

Just our hourly rate with machines running plus debris removal. but we always do it by the job our numbers are felt secret.
I use Shindaiwa HT232. I have never used Echo or Stihl trimmers. Have been thinking of trying them out. Thanks for the review.

I’m currently using echo and stihl aswell as Husqvarna, There all really good brands my favourite is echo, it depends on the size of the job, if it’s a small job it’s hourly rate but set price for bigger jobs like hedge trimming!
I would go for the Stihl just because that's what I have the best dealer support for and parts as well as the HS46 I am looking at is the lightest I have ever felt. Currently running a cheaper 4-stroke which is like holding a box of bricks its so heavy and a somewhat lighter 2-stroke which is good for diosmas etc. which need the faster tip speed. We charge by the job for hedging too.

I just bid a job flat out. I look at tools required, time, risk, and disposal. I've had jobs where I had to trim with a Stihl kombi trimmer with an extension.. if you are done in 20 minutes vs 3 and a half hours. What do you want to make in an hour?

Your right most dont like to hear a hourly rate. I charge by the bush but in the end I will get my hour rate.
I use a stihl hs45 for small tight spots and stihl hl 94k for just about everything i prune.... and i charge by the job not by the hrs
Not sure about the newer Echo trimmers but the older models were unforgiving with unwanted vibration. Switched to Stihl years ago. So much smoother running than the competition. I would be interested in trying a new Echo though. I have multiple trimmers that I use. Small to the combi unit with extension and trimmer head. Love the articulating head of the combi. Great for fall clean ups of hostas, day lilies and ornamental grasses. No more bending over to cut😃😃. As for pricing, ALWAYS by the job!!! My minimum is 200$. I won’t even think about trimming a few shrubs for 75$ anymore. Qualify the customer over the phone. I like to get at least 150$/hour or more. Any ladder work is an additional 100$. Yesterday was one large overgrown yew hedge, three medium yews, two overgrown hydrangeas, one overgrown dogwood shrub and one large zebra grass. 2.5 hours/650$. 6x10 utility trailer 3/4 full. Customer was very happy with the results. Me too😃😃. If you guys n gals haven’t raised your prices it’s about time you do!!!! So much work out there!! Shrubby 😃

I've got a hc152 echo nothing to fancy since I rarely do trimming but occasionally do it, but my only complaint with it is I think it could be built better mainly talking about the plastic handle. I've replaced 2 handles on the unit since I bought it. Definitely a pain to do, but other than that love my echo equipment and will he more than likely switching to all echo for next year. Both are great but where the difference lies is the weight for me. If I’m trimming for a few hours which I used to do alot than the Stihl is the far better choice.
I charge small bushes 6 per bush and 9 per medium bush and 15 or 20 per a large bush like 3 feet tall and 3 wide
This is exactly how i charge also. I dont tell the customer, but in my head i time and calculate by the hour. If you use these prices per bush(6,9,10,15), it comes out to about 100.00 an hour.

I like and have both the echo & stihl but I charge base on the type and size of plant. I provide a s ulpure type trim on plants and hedges.
Just starting out, so my local dealer is recommending the Stihl HS 56.
Some of the cities in my area have restrictions against gas powered.... so I have tried the ECO battery powered unit, which seems to work very well.... aside from the 30-40 minute battery life.

Do battery powered hedge trimmers or even other battery powered ope have a place in a professional lawn care company? I hardly see any guys using battery ope on the job. Some battery units I have used perform quite well.
Stihl single-sided R Series is by far the best trimmer with their own company and any other company and that’s 30 years of experience
Brian, next time you do a competition with hedge trimmers, you should also include a battery powered unit. Stihl makes several good ones. They are lighter, cleaner air quality and do a great job.

Hmm both good units. I'm thinking about replacing my crappy black and decker and going for a Stihl HS 45. More of my family members want me to do some landscaping for them so later this year I may throw down for a stihl.
Both great units, however, I give the win to Stihl for its weight and how it does on fine trimming.
I've had my Stihl hs45 for 10 years and I have a lot of hedges. The hs45 is my favorite power tool, starts all the time and never kills.
I am considering getting the ego commercial.
I haven't used either machine. 8.50 per bush (under 6foot).
Currently using an HS45 & an HS 81R for the meaty stuff. For long reach I us my Husky 535LK!
Easier to make big money by the job, people want to pay $15 an hour for professional work and it’s just unrealistic
But they'll pay several times that for a plumber's apprentice to fix a leaky pipe and think nothing of it.

I'm a fan of charging per job. It's easy when I have apartments or commercial jobs and they can't verify my hours. I can't stand being watched and questioned about "were you really here for THAAAAT long" when i charge per hr.
I do my quotes in 2 ways either $40.00 Australian per hour or one price for the job so if that job takes 2 hours or 6 hours its the one price.
I had an echo and I switch to Sthil much lighter and more manegble

If they get mulch after Hedges ill with mow too I'll throw it in for one hundred but if they just want hedge only it's two hundred and up all depends on how often I am paid to come on property basically I need a dollar a minute no matter what is the bottom line.. Plus I basically include mow with hedge and possible gutter all package price to keep busy year round great video
I use the stihl hs 81r and hs 82t works so good for me.. but I am a stihl freak to be honest
We use echos and stihl but echos for some reason the blades stay sharper and echos give you a crisper cut over stihl but they are both great units.
I normally do per job. I agree with Brandon, with the hourly people get weirded out and start to get very defensive.
If Brian does no shave I'll do no shave November haha.

I have the HC-2420's slightly bigger brother on the way and even bigger, single sided brother on the way the HCS-4020, the wait is killing me. The Echo has more pro features than the STIHL HS 56.

You sure you buddy knows how to trim a shrub?? You always start on the sides then you work ur way to the top. Always one way 👆 I work in a Nursery in a past.
Btw Echo its the best.
If you want to be correct you wouldn’t use a hedge trimmer and use hand pruners and plunge cut everything
