I'm putting a small system together for a friend - and decided to go for mainly the new Behringer 55 series Eurorack modules, along with a few extras to complete the lineup (Erica Synths Pico DSP, and Doepfer Dual Quantize, Ring/S&H/Slew and Wasp Filter). This system packs some serious punch, here are some initial explorations..
UPDATE:
Here is a second video with a direct comparison between the System55 and my VINTAGE MOOG MODULAR 3C: • Behringer System 55 & ... - Hudba
Finally someone who knows how to play this instrument properly!
Thank you very much for this demonstration.
I really enjoyed listening to these. Thanks for posting.
NIcely done...as good an advert for this sytem as I have yet seen! Good job!
love the sound of that osc banging up against that lpf with the super snappy envelopes
I thought that sounds great - i like how neat and tidy this vid is as well - sometimes theres so many wires on top of the unit that you cant even see it .
Best demo so far. Masterful playing skills
Thanks Bobbfett!
Damn those Moog oscillators really do sound juicy. Even in Behringer form. The VCA and VCF definitely help, I can hear the VCA doing it’s job with those oscillators.
just amazing to hear a dino roar in this day and age.
Damn I was in doubt how well these sounded by the Behringer videos alone, but seeing someone that knows how to play them really makes them shine…
thank you!
something about a sequence....
Best demo thats out there! Top!
Thank you!
best demo of these modules I have seen
Fank yoo!
this provided an entirely new perspective on how to use a sequencer for me. By exclusively using step trigger mode, you can pre program any scale or melody and play said melody/scale at any given step. How cool!
Yes - a very powerful feature often overlooked!
This is brilliant. A walk-through of the configuration process would be SO appreciated. I am a new owner of the Behringer System 55 Complete. Where to begin.. lol. This showcases just some of the possibilities. Bravo.
Sounds so good fuuck...... Love it
Thanks for this
I ordered a bunch of modules, next week is going to be intense. Never dabbled in this stuff since , oh, say 1973. This demo convinced me that what I heard on a ARP 2600 back in the daze, and replicated by BEHRINGER was the real deal. Why? it cannot be a fluke that they are getting a reputation as a synth design group with smarts about what they sell and how. The nearest synth demo in real life is hundreds of miles away here. Sometimes CZcams posts are deceptive or somehow not accurate. I am thankful synth heads do this, heck , someday maybe I will. I did sub as the content is useful.
Thanks!
5:30 really nice progression/patch
Impressive!!
very nice
That's a surprisingly versatile system. I don't suppose you could provide some explanation for that wonderful percussive patch you finished out the video with, could you? :) I see you're pinging the fixed filterbank, sounds like there's maybe some feedback involved. But I don't understand how you got the swelling sound or how you made the hihat -- it sounds like more than just filtered noise. Any hints would be greatly appreciated!
Gosh I can't remember the patch details now - it was 3 years ago! I don't think I was pinging the FFB - it has no cv input to ping - I just tweak the various filter frequencies by hand. I think the the sound going into it is a noise / via / env / lpf combo with a slow LFO sewing it before it goes into the FFB, so no feedback - back as I say, I can't really remember 😁
Loving the ambient section from 5:30, any chance you could give some more details of the patching that's going on there, it's difficult to follow exactly with the camera angle for that part.
Awesome, this makes me want a boog.
I no longer want one. Curiosity kilt the cat, satisfaction brung it back! But the tarrifs....oh my
Wow, nice patches. I wonder if you have a list over your modules in you rack! Like if you have a modular grid link that we can see?
Do you have this on modular grid so we can see modules, ? thanks!
HI, I am thinking of making Behringer system 55 for my self, but I have only "blueprint" for the big 4 osc system with all the multiplers etc.. I see that you seems to succed in making a smaller version (with fever modules). can you please describe the number (how many of each) and Behringer numbers of the modules you have put together in the 2 racks, which seems to function well. I am thinking of system, that can drive 3 seq with the 960 sequencer.
Great demonstration and nice sequences! Did you transpose the sequences from time to time (e.g. 0:53) by adding some control voltage on the right side of the case? How did you get the transposition so precise? (I assume with a poti it easily will get out of tune...)
I'm using a Doepfer Quantizer module, you can shift between major and minor, add 7ths, etc. Its pretty useful
@@memetunestudio ahh Bach!
Great video. What module are you using for the audio output?
Thanks! It was the Erica Synths Pico DSP
Ben, As you own the real thing, how do the Behringer modules stand up?
What was the system cost?
I don't care if it's a perfect replication of a real System 55. It sounds pretty d*** good to my ears! Especially in your hands!
I absolutely agree brother. I can’t wait for the Behringer 2500 modules 🙌🙏
I agree. Some people get too hung-up on perfection. If it requires an A/B blind test, the difference is insignificant.
how do you feel about the sound of these vs the original moog?
Theres no comparison. One is like a vintage Ferrari and the other is like a Mazda MX5. However, it is a lot of fun as whole package, and its cheap - the whole system here cost less than one R.A.Moog module
zack dagoba kinda figured it would be this way. Thanks!
zack dagoba damn that much difference in sound or is it the user interface cause it's 3u vs 5u?
@@off711 I suppose the difference is very subjective, and I am lucky enough to have the real thing - but there is a magical quality to the early Moog modulars that cannot easily be recreated, and I have compared it to ARP, Roland, Emu, lots of modular systems. Maybe the early Buchla 100 has a similar VCO tone, and also the ARP 2500, but nothing really sounds the same. And certainly not the Behringer, sadly
zack dagoba yeah didn't hear that thick bottom end. there's so many vintage Moog clones out there even from modern Moog guess nothing sounds like the original. thx for the great tunes as always!
How do you do the harmonics at about Minute 6:00? And did you have problems with the tuning of the 921a/b modules?
using the sequencer and just pressing the stage select buttons - you can create a kind of home-made keyboard with arbitrary tunings - very cool (Bob Moog designed it back in the 60s)
@@memetunestudio ah like pressure points.
Fantastic video and sound exploration of the System 55! We are now Subscribing and hope you will return the gesture as we all need a bit of support during these stranger times. Waiting for our System 55 to arrive. Keep them fantastic patches coming!
Wait is up except for USA folk. 1 distributor only. Write yer congressman!
Hi Zach. Do you have an email I could reach out to you on?
can i have a list of the components installed? that would be awesome!
It’s all behringer system 55 modules ( Moog modular clones?
@@VinceWallace478 get the entire collection! =) add some strange bits and bobs and off you go.
Sadly I’ve not got an original system 55 to compare but I think the Behringer system has some of the biggest sounding oscillators in my collection, with the Behringer Kat a close second bizarrely enough.
the original cat is underrated.. the new one is not bad has a big sound a little different tone to the original.. ..I have a system of 901/921 synthwerk and a set of mos lab 921.. Zack.. have you tried those..?
Hi Paul. I've been comparing the Behringer 55 to the original RA Moog, and it is quite interesting how they stand up. I think the B55 VCO is about 5db quieter on its output, but it does sound pretty close when matched, but they do lack the magic of early RA 901s, not surprisingly. The filter is also very "moogy" but I think if anything it has gone too far towards the rubbery moog sound we all imagine - the RA Moog 904A is much more solid and rounded. And the envelopes on the B55 are not as snappy or precise as the originals. Anyway, the net result is really quite Moog-like and very impressive for the price. However, I won't be selling my original Moog any time soon! I'll do a proper video comparison at some point..
@@memetunestudio Great, looking forward to the video ! Also, love the new Mirror Systems album.
@@PaulLawlerMusic thank-you!
@@memetunestudio yes please! :) (Do the comparison)
