  • Data indicates that nearly half of the world will be nearsighted (myopic) by the year 2050. Are we taking this health concern seriously enough? Dr. Kevin Chan is the Center Director of Treehouse Eyes, the only specialty medical practice in the U.S. that is dedicated exclusively to myopia management for children. Dr. Chan obtained his undergraduate degree in Pharmacology at Western University in London, ON, Canada. He later graduated with distinguished dual degrees of Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) and Masters of Vision Science (M.S.) from the New England College of Optometry, Boston, MA. Dr. Chan is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry; and is a guest contributor in the Review of Optometry. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

@@AlcoveShadow over half of my class wore glasses at the age of 10. You know, starting at 0.5 or 0.75 and ending at 2-3 at 15 years. Even those non-nerdy students were getting glasses, at the last year of high school there were only 3 people (out of 34) not wearing glasses. Looking 8 hours in school to short distance (book) and long distance (blackboard) in the matter of seconds is super damaging too. Eyes get tired but you have to make them work, therefore eyes get tired and overworked. Divide that by 12 years and here we go.

Inspiring talk that every parent with a nearsighted child needs to take to heart! Myopia isn't just an inconvenience to be compensated with eyeglasses or contact lenses. It often leads to serious sight threatening conditions! Kids need to have their myopia treated with the special non-surgical methods Dr. Chan was talking about so that their eyes don't continually deteriorate! Parents - you wouldn't stand idly by if your child was diabetic - you would seek treatment to stop the progression. Do the same with myopia!

Myopia is caused by doing things close up. Reading glasses moves things further away which addresses the cause.
The prescribed lens brings things in closer.
Then the optometrist recommends wearing these as much as possible so that you accommodate the prescription lens.
This is what causes the progression of worsening vision.
They compensate for the effect while increasing the cause.
"long eyeball" is the myth told by optometrists to distract the public from asking why the lens of the eye has accommodated a close range of focus.
That is caused by doing a lot of close work.
Wear reading glasses to prevent myopia.
Squinting is what naturally reduces the curve of the lens and gradually corrects the problem over time.
Prescription lenses are the quick fix that increases the problem.
Follow the money and you will see what the real problem is.
Good vision is natural. Great vision happens for free. Only bad vision costs money.

In fact, it seems that he also makes those lenses just a little too strong. Then he wants you to wear those lenses constantly. That is the cause of the progression. But he can't admit that.
Best thing to do to improve your vision naturally is to do the exact opposite of what the optometrist prescribes.

My bad vision is genetic. My mom, nana, and great-grandmother all needed glasses. I think this is an epidemic because kids are staring at screens for hours all day, even in school. I have noticed my eyesight has gotten worse as computers and smartphones became more prevalent. Currently, my vision is 750 in one eye and 725 in another. My eyesight is mostly self-inflicted, but it doesn’t have to be that way with children. It’s important to makes sure they are getting enough air and sunlight instead of cooping them up all day.

How can we actually stop the elongation of the eye and deformation of the cornea? I have myopia since I was 13yo at 250 grade. Now at age 62, my grade increased to 900 od/800os. But when I started wearing ionspec medical eyewear, afte 1 and 3mo of use, my eye grade decreased to 700od/550os. As I continue wearing it my vision still improves. Though I have a normal tension glaucoma and cataract, that too I believe has been prevented from worsening wearing the ionspec. I am not endorsing any product, but just sharing my experience. I thank God my healer for I am not taking any drops, just faith and lifestyle change called repentance. 🙏🏾🕊️

My, "big and wild dream", is to take personal measurement responsibility, and get a refractive change from -0.75 Diopters, to +0.5 Diopters.
That is from 20/50 to 20/20, even if it takes a year to achieve that goal.
This means wearing a, "prevention plus 2.5 Diopters", for all close work.
Pilots do this - under their control.
A study, by Dr. Frances Young, proved this much is possible, if the young person will take self measurement and this science - very seriously.

"Benefits outweigh the risks" why can't we apply it for myipia research? If we can somehow know a way, surgery or through genetic therapy to shorten the elongation of the eyes and to find a cure for the complications too in result of the eyes being so abnormally elongated for years due to myopia. Everyday I am hoping that our researchers in the field will actually begin to race for an effective cure for it because admit it, prevention isn't actually a better option if you can't actually have it if our modern lifestyles demand too much near work from us with little rest from jobs or school.

In this day and age, Kids should be able to read "books" from 2-5m distance. The "book" should be a private 100inch e-ink panel in a well lit room or even outdoor, decentralized also. No need for gathering huge bounch of kids in one place for studying. A lot of studying should be done by listen to audios not watching and reading. They should learn to write in chalkboard style not on tiny paper which strains their eyes. All these wont be too expensive if we make use of the internet and change the mindset.
