To those who said this movie sucked have no idea about the type of character bruce banner is. He isn't a comedic guy like the MCU makes him out to be. He's meant to be a very tragic character at heart who's had an extremely hard childhood. Something which this movie does perfectly. Hulk is was more complex than just smashing things. This is honestly the most comic accurate you'll get from any hulk rendition. It explores his backstory and the inner troubles he has. Ang Lee did an amazing job!!

Even as a kid i really enjoyed the mood of this film, they dive so much deeper into the character of Bruce Banner than any other Hulk movie and in my opinion this is the greatest film. Not only did it have one hell of a solid thought provoking story the action when it happened was exciting and fun!!! I felt sorry for the hulk, i like how he's like a caged animal in this one who you feel for. It did everything right. I was 8 when i saw it and its still one of my favourite films. I want to see a Hulk film like this again.

To me, it perfectly depicts the depth of emotions underneath of someone mistreated in life. The self-hatred, feelings of unfairness, memories of cruelty, knowing their is no justice, the pain never stops, the peace never arrives, irritation, unresolved anger, deep inner rage at the state of your life - bubbling and boiling inside us tho calm on the surface, repressed - til it comes out and explodes. Nothing except pure pure rage.

I was 8 when this came out and had an incredible time marvelling at the spectacles but eventually grew up and felt sorry for Bruce. What a tragic thought knowing there's a monster living in you and will readily destroy so much if you can't keep your own anger under control. Horribly underrated movie.

Honestly it’s kind of like THE BATMAN. People weren’t ready for a full on movie of Batman’s detective side. They were used to the explosion and fight scenes from the previous Batman movies. A lot thought it was boring because of this. As for me I loved it for diving into that side of Batman.

    • @Bardem_Marrone
      @Bardem_Marrone Před 2 měsíci +1

@@christtv3576 EXACTLY. The Hulk is a tragic hero born from hate and trauma the same way Batman is. The action and fight scenes don’t define a character. It’s their meaning of why they take action. When movies like Hulk and the Batman delve deeper into the actual person behind the mask/monster, it makes it that much more interesting and meaningful . Giving emotional and psychological depth to a superhero is NEVER a bad thing.

I like this version a bit better than 2008. I had read that some critics bashed this movie for being dark and sad, when, honestly, being the Hulk is without a doubt the most depressing super power. Constantly being hunted by the military, never sure when or if something would happen to make you transform into Hulk, not to mention the lives put in danger by the Hulk. Hell, I would go to say that, as far as the character of Banner/Hulk goes, that this is way more realistic than 2008

It was simply an age before it's time. People weren't ready to see that side. When people think realistic some just look at the physical sides, but there's only so much real you can put in a 8-10 ft tall man with enough muscle power to level a street block. Me as well as a lot of people liked this movie because of exactly what you just said. And I'm glad that someone else can actually voice out the finer points of this film.

That was great, they played that aspect excellent. but being a comic book fan i much prefer The hulk in the new one...at least his physical design and everything. When i saw the hulk actually physically getting bigger and bigger and at one point he is like 15ft tall that really made me just turn my head and go wtf?! as far as everything else goes it was a good movie....the only problems i think are that the hulk himself in it was well rather just weird and they made the absorbing man his father and thats just...not right. He was not even originally a hulk villain nor did he get his powers from Gamma shit originally he was given powers by loki to fight thor. Though his origin has been changed over the years he was still a very odd pick to go with the first higher end hulk movie to be made.

NBE21 Then you haven't read all the hulk comics because in the comics, hulk can grow to a certain size. The hulk from 2003 was a good representation of that. When I saw the hulk from 2008 and the avengers, I was pretty mad that they made him so small, they could've made him a little bit bigger. Not to mention, the hulk from 2008 was very very weak, he could barely lift an army vehicle when the hulk from 2003 threw a tank more than a mile away.

I know the current "Avengers" movies are popular right now, and everybody digs Mark Ruffalo's version of the Hulk (myself included), I still consider Ang Lee's 2003 "Hulk" to be one of the finest comic book based movies ever, and contrary to popular belief, one of the most faithful.
Being a true fan of the Hulk comic stories from the 60's to the 80's, I think I can say this with credibility. I'm also coming from the angle that the 70's TV show is not the real Hulk.
First, Ang Lee's film is extremely faithful to the comics. Watching the movie, it was as if some scenes were lifted right out of the Stan Lee stories. Hulk fighting army tanks in the desert, Hulk leaping over canyon cliffs, Hulk touching the reaches of space, and yes, even Hulk dogs are from the comics. Hulk's father in the movie is directly based on Bruce's father in the comics, Brian Banner, who was abusive and allegedly had a hand in Hulk's origin. The many villain incarnations that David Banner takes on at the end of the film are not just the Absorbing Man, but are an amalgam of many of Hulk villains including Zzax.
Second, Ang Lee's film was less about simply "Hulk Smash" and more about the idea of the Hulk. The idea of evolution, the idea of repression and subsequent freedom from that repression. It's interesting that every Ang Lee film is similarly about this idea of repression. Repressed gay cowboys, repressed women in China, a repressed slave finding freedom after the Civil War, etc. The evolution idea is expressed in the food chain of "Hulk" creatures we see in the movie. First a frog, then dogs, Hulk himself, and then a near "Hulk god" in David Banner. Evolution is also cinematically expressed in the morph edits seen throughout the film. Contrary to popular belief, the multi-frame editing was not just about mimicking a a comic book, it was about expressing the idea of freedom from repression, of seeing something from different angles, different points of view, different sides, much like Bruce has a "different side" to him. If you notice, the multi-angles many times show us the same subject but from a different camera angle. The idea of the Hulk is also metaphorically visually expressed through the imagery of atomic mushroom clouds and jellyfish, two visually similar objects. It expresses the idea that this Hulk was born of two of the greatest known forces in the universe, genetic and atomic force.
It's Ang Lee's masterful filmmaking, strong use of visual metaphor, and faithfulness to the original comics that really sets his Hulk film apart for me. Perhaps the one scene that really spells out what Ang Lee is doing and also brought me back to the old comics was that first close-up we see of Hulk free and jumping through the desert to the haunting Danny Elfman music. Classic..

I really don’t understand why so many people hated this movie. It had such great dramatic depth and emotion. Ang Lee really nailed the psychological aspects of Bruce Banner and his inner struggle with the Hulk. Lots of idiots say it’s boring and forgettable, but I do not find this film boring nor forgettable at all. I find it fun, interesting, and memorable. Danny Elfman’s score for this film is absolutely epic and far better than the scores in modern Marvel movies.
Hulk had an amazing all-star cast. Eric Bana was a great Bruce Banner and perfect casting for him. I guess Disney Marvel fanboys can’t handle a minute watching a Marvel movie without some stupid jokes derailing it. I hate how the MCU has ruined the Hulk by turning the tragic monster into nothing more than an unfunny, weightless, worthless caricature.

The dessert landscape, Hulk's sad expressions, how it ends, him drowning.... those are the things I remember most. It is such a melancholic movie. And of course, the soundtrack. This melody 00:22 to 1:03 brings me the sense of helplessness. I didn't know how to explain what I felt until recently I saw a youtube comment on P. Tchaikovsky song Pas de Deux video: "The main part of the melody is a downward scale. A downward scale! Have you ever heard such an emotionally expressive downward scale in your life?". Both songs have this in common. Going down becomes the climax, and that happens to Bruce as well. He does not rises from the ashes like Tony Stark or learn to become a better person like Thor or achieve his goals like Steve Rogers. His "upbringing" is actually his downfall, therefor this soundtrack fits in perfectly.

This is personally my favorite Hulk movie. The story is incredible and insanely faithful to the original comics. The characters are well fleshed out and east to like. Hulk himself is absolutely astonishing, pulling of mile-long jumps, throwing around tanks like inflatable toys, and obliterating entire city blocks. The only thing I don't think is the best is his design; the shade of green is a bit too bright and makes the CGI model look a bit weird, and his features are a bit too rounded and not quite furious enough, though it's close. There also isn't quite enough detail on the model for my taste. This doesn't make his design bad, it's still pretty good, it just needed some more detail and a few minor adjustments. This is why 2008's design is my personal favorite, call me a bad fan or whatever all I want, I don't care. I just like his more exaggerated features, makes him feel more . . . angry. If not just the tiniest smidge evil. However, overall, I like this movie better.

    This film is highly underrated.
People give regard and extra cool points for Ruffalo and Norton for being post *MCU* Hulks.
*But Banas Hulk will forever stand out for many reasons:*
First off, he's got *Danny Elfman* backing the OST, instant win lol.
_Second, His relationship with Betty was more genuine, ties back to when they were both kids, living in the same area but never actually meeting until they were grown up. They understood each other, had differences, it was even a forbidden romance if you could call it that. They even broke up at one point, then rekindled after she learned the truth about his emotional distancing, and truly "got him". Making them not being together in the end so much more tragic._ *Whereas HulkxWidow just happens..messing around in the workplace i guess...*
*_Third and most importantly,_* we get a much deeper dive into Banner & Hulks psyches, the real reason behind his mutation, what makes him a truly *broken person,* and how that person gave birth to the Hulk as a inner emotion vent due to the death of his mother, which was also tragic._
*And because of that tragedy,* we not only sympathize with Banner but it gives Hulk a much much more meaningful exterior, when you look at him, you're seeing the manifestation of Bruce's pain, not just the Avengers green muscle man.
_You don't get that with Norton or Ruffalo because they were simply thrown into the mix of MCU's progression towards The Avengers, which is fine but we have no emotional investment in what should be the _*_deepest character_*_ on the team._
*Hulk 2003* is NOT perfect, and it certainly should've been given a sequel. BUT it had a character to dissect and dammit they did pretty splendid with what the had at the time, especially when CGI wasn't at it's peak.
But the Issue with the *MCU and The Hulk,* is mainstream general storytelling gets in the way of character development on a personal level, especially with the less popularized characters, that's why *Banas "Banner" (Hulk)* will forever belong to probably the best balanced _"Hulk film"_ we'll ever get in our lifetime. *☢*

3 things superhero movies lack now that 2003 hulk nailed perfectly. 1: Slow moments that are incredibly interesting, bruce's backstory with father scenes, frog scene in the lab, first transformation scene that is long and drawn out. adds character to a movie
2: not being afraid to show true pain, murder, trauma, self loathing, in a comic book movie
Truely diving deep into the emotions of the hulk.
3: an incredible score. these new movies just dont feel the same and as special as this movie, spiderman 1 and 2, or the first iron man. all those movies had a special spark. these new movies lack that. (the watchmen from DC comics also has that spark)

Ang Lee once famously said that, as an Asian growing up outside his parents' experience and wishes -- bucking the traditional trends, pursuing the theatrical arts, leaving much of his mother culture behind -- ALL of his films were about "breaking free from parental expectations," that he was, in effect, telling the same story of inner torment over and over and over again. Wedding Banquet; Brokeback Mountain; Sense and Sensibility; Ice Storm; Crouching Tiger; even this Hulk adaptation. It shows through clearly.
