Dan Buettner is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and New York Times bestselling author. He discovered the five places in the world - dubbed blue zones hotspots - where people live the longest, healthiest lives.
His articles about these places in The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic are two of the most popular for both publications.
Buettner now works in partnership with municipal governments, large employers, and health insurance companies to implement Blue Zones Projects in communities, workplaces, and universities. Blue Zones Projects are well-being initiatives that apply lessons from the Blue Zones to entire communities by focusing on changes to the local environment, public policy, and social networks. The program has dramatically improved the health of more than 5 million Americans to date.
His new book “The Blue Zones Challenge: A 4-Week Plan for a Longer Better Life” is a four-week guide and year-long sustainability program to jump-start your journey to better health, happiness, less stress, and longer life.

I really liked his comment, "If you teach people to make healthy food delicious, you give them the gift of life." That's what Chef AJ does. So valuable!

As a child, I didn't want to eat animal products, meat or dairy. My mother was so worried about me but she relaxed when she started attending a Seventh Day Adventist church. They taught her cook meals with soy beans and to prepare plant milks. I am so grateful to that church and their beliefs. Even though I do not belong to that church I am a huge fan of them!

That was such a wonderful, wonderful talk. I became fascinated by the old people of Okinawa (they don't live close to the US military base btw). Another characteristic I recall is they were very community oriented. So you might have a 100 year old lady taking food from her garden to someone much younger who was sick. They would stay and chat and do anything which might have helped the health of the sick person but without being overbearing. They would make communal food if they were in a choral or musical group and serve the red bean paste sweets at their community hall when they performed. As Dan said, the activities were simple, not fancified. In the first book about the Okinawans, community featured the way it might be with the Adventists of Loma Linda. There's a sense of belonging. Which btw the way AJ is something you knit together every day with your fabulous pandemic polemics 🥰

Just an amazing human being---if we all keep spreading his message(which I do in a PB Group I moderate in Egypt) I believe we can change the world, peoples perspectives of what health really should look like---Thank for such a great interview

So glad to see Dan Buettner on here, thanks so much, Chef AJ.
We put up a huge fight here in Loma Linda to stop McDonald’s from moving in, but they prevailed in the end. It would be interesting to see what the impact of their presence has been, now that they have been here for a few years.

My husband had a pacemaker put in at a Adventist hospital. I would never recommend one. The food was terrible and I brought him food to avoid it. Also a Dr. there operated on his knee and he actually was furious that my husband didn't take the pain medicine that he didn't need. He was a drug pusher in my opinion. He also said my husband would have to have a knee replacement in 6 months that was 4 years ago. Still no knee replacement and we walk every day. We changed doctors and hospitals. We went to them because they were Adventist and being vegan that was important to us. This interview was amazing and I like Dan Buettner very much! Thank you!

I'm finding the new book complex. These aren't usual everyday ingredients. I was thinking it would be useful American recipes from Maine to CA.
