- Have you ever wondered what's up with the Fat over Lean Rule?🤔
Oil painting doesn't have a lot of rules, I'm happy to say, but this is one you should always follow, especially if you're painting in layers.
In this video I'll answer these three questions about the fat over lean rule;
1. WHAT is the Fat over Lean Rule?
2. HOW do you follow it?
3. WHY is it important to use it?

Amazing you're the best artiest thank you for teaching me
Very useful, thank you.
So happy you found it useful, Michael! 😊
Wait! i always thought thin sticks to thick! have i been wrong?
Thank you for this video! Question: is starting with a heavy impasto with a lean medium (e.g. 100% mineral spirits), followed by thinner layers of paint thinned with oil a violation of the fat over lean rule? This is the procedure I've always followed, by I typically get an awful "matte" finish to my paintings which suggests I'm doing it wrong.
In other words, there seem to be two parameters: (1) thin paint --> thick pain; and (2) lean medium --> oily medium. You seem to be saying these go together, whereas i thought they were different entirely. Thanks!

hi! if you just finished with thick layer of straight paint at the end, how can we achieve to do really realistic paintings with fine details respecting the fat over lean rule? does oil paint is more flexible than acrylics? Because with acrylic its impossible to do tiny details without adding some medium or water... thank you! :D
Hi, how about a color that contains high oil but dries very fast, then how would you use it for fat over lean rule?
