How to cure FIN ROT

  • This is a short video on how to cure fin rot. Although it is prevalent,, fin rot is easy to cure if it doesn't go to far. Simply use Melafix. It is an effective treatment especially for countries that can not get antibiotics. Melafix is an all natural treatment from tea trees. This particular video demonstrates how I treated my guppies for fin rot.

    Great video Ron! I feel like I have something to add. Although Melafix is a good fin rot cure, it should be noted that it’s not an appropriate option for fish with labyrinth organs, such as bettas and gourami, because they go to the surface to breathe air, and melafix creates an oily residue on the surface of the water that labyrinth fish can breathe in and suffocate on. Same goes for bettafix, and pretty much any medication with “fix” in its name, as the oil comes from the tree oil that is the active ingredient in such medications. If you have a betta or gourami or other labyrinth fish with fin rot, the recommended cure is lots and lots of fresh clean water via daily water changes.

      Thank you for the video because Melafix really is a great option for most fish. It’s just those pesky labyrinth fish that are the exception

  • @Dogs.Are.Better.Than.People

    The bacteria that cause fin rot is naturally occurring in every aquarium. It doesn't just come from pet stores or somewhere specific, it's everywhere. All it takes is the fish to become stressed from a multitude of things which weakens the immune system and it strikes. So when ever someone says 'it must have come from the pet store' isn't exactly correct. It's always in your tank no matter where your fish came from. Good water quality reduces risk of infection it's doesn't prevent it. Keeping fish healthy, well fed on a balanced diet, clean, relaxed and stress free is the true prevention.

    I have a platinum betta fish and tbh after a week hes suddenly has small grey parts on his fin. My husband has thankfully woke up when he was leaving for work and well, saved his life. We are both unsure what to get to treat his fin rot because of mixed reviews. We tried almond indian leaves but they gave us small ones when we were promised big ones. Im unsure where to buy some that are big. Or what sort of antibiotic to use. If someone can help that would be great.

    HELP - I got 4 male guppies to start my new 12 gallon tank. They were ordered online and have had them for 2 weeks now, all seemed fine. The largest one has a slight black/grey colour on the end of his tail since we got him but I thought it was going away. Just now I noticed a small hole in the middle of his tail. The other fish all look ok but I don't have a quarantine tank or any medication. Obviously I can't go to a pet shop, what do I do? The medication in this video - on amazon is not currently being shipped to the UK

    Hello, I’ve a crazy question. Couple of weeks before when I bought new fishes from pet store (3gold fish), I was little afraid of any disease spread in the main aquarium, so I planned to quarantine them in 10 gallon tank. I took tap water, added aquasafe and then added Melafix (less than 5ml). Within hours all the fishes died. I was wondering whether it was due to water issue and so I tested the water (all parameters were good). Today one of my older gold fish just started having fin rot and planned to quarantine. Tap water + aquasafe + aquarium salt and 2 ml of Melafix. Same situation again within an hour my fish died. I feel disheartened for quarantining the fish rather I should have kept my fish on my actual aquarium. :(. Does Melafix harm or kill fish for any reason? Can anyone advise please. Thanks in advance.

    • @FridayFishFacts
      @FridayFishFacts  Před 4 lety +2

      That’s very bizarre. I’m curious if the fish would have died in your QT tank if you had not added melafix

      Friday Fish Facts - Yeah that’s very strange. Will over dose of Melafix kill the fish? The odor of Melafix is too strong and I have this doubt since it happened as second instance today.

    Hi! I've got goldfish, and their fins have become partially discolored, but that's been going on for a quite a while already, they haven't lost any portion of their fins, so I don't know if it's fin rot or something else (my black moor is losing its blackness too), I don't have a lamp either, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it, they barely have any sun lighting hitting them. Thanks in advance.

      @@FridayFishFacts Hi, thanks for replying; It's an indoors aquarium, It has mechanical and biological filtration, filter power it's fairly above requirement, aquarium it's roughly 25 gallons and I have two medium sized goldfish, Oranda and Black moor, they've live there since they were very small, for more than a year now, I do partial water changes at least once a week, but most of the times twice a week, I siphon at least once a week, and do a big maintenance once a month (clean the crystals, clean/change the sponges, and so on) I even have a pothos growing on the filter, but that's kind of new, a month or so, and the discoloration's been going on for months; I read it might have to do with the lack of aquarium illumination, but I just want to make sure it's not rot. Thanks again for your advice.
