    The Witcher 3's "Permit" side quest is a nod to Asterix & Obelix's "The Twelve Tasks of Asterix". I loved seeing this easter egg and its one of the most memorable moments from the asterix movies which I still reference to this day (they were pretty popular here in europe, when I grew up)

    • @JupilAire
      @JupilAire Před rokem +48

      The twelve tasks of Asterix & Obelix, is a reference to Franz Kafka' literature, more specifically "The Trial". A man is on a trial for an unknown reason (or no reason) and is slowly consumed by a bureaucratic nightmare, to a point where he thinks he's guilty without knowing of what (if I remember right). The French use "kafkaesque" as an adjective to describe situations so absurd, that they make you feel like going in circle and going slowly mad.
      The Asterix & Obelix reference aims to ridicule the French administration that is very well known to be kafkaesque like in the Witcher's quest. At the time, it was a pretty strong move for a product read by both children an adults.
      Also, CD Projekt is from Poland, a country somewhat marked by the communist Eastern block years and its strong bureaucracy. Most are probably educated on Kafka's work, as well as very familiar to the Asterix & Obelix comics.
      It's actually crazily amazing how a concept/idea from a cultural monument, can be reproduced and evolve over so many years to land in a video game.

      -when taking out the SAMs, you were right on top of them. IRL, you’d neutralize them from a significantly further distance with the HARM as it has a range of over 60 miles. Additionally, most blocks/iterations/models of the AGM-88 HARM are fire and forget weapons. IRL, you’d be dead if you were that close to a SAM.
      -when dropping the JDAM, you had boots on the ground laser designating the target. IRL, it’s a GPS guided munition. There was one block where you’d plug in The coordinates but wasn’t as common. They should have used an “LGB-xx” iteration to make it accurate. Additionally, 3 seconds isn’t enough for that bomb to arm and detonate. They would be higher.
      -The IR being able to see through cloud cover wouldn’t happen, they’re not that good.
      -“A-10 CAS” wouldn’t be illuminated on the HUD, ever, on anything, let alone a Naval Jet.
      That’s just the A2G stuff. The A2A is even more inaccurate. The most glaring error is radio chatter from an ATC……… In Miami lol.
      However, still a very fun mission in one of the most underrated FPS campaigns of all time IMHO.

    Naughty Dog and Rockstar are in a league of their own when it comes to believable narrative experiences (though I think Santa Monica could pull it off as well if they went for a more grounded style of game.) The openings to The Last of Us 1 and GTA V were equally as amazing. All 3 let you know within 30 minutes that you were playing something truly special and generation defining.

For people who don't know, the Form A38 is an unobtainable piece of paper in a house that "makes Insane people" and they allmost succeed by it til Asterix and Obelix reverse the gag and ask for form A39. It is one of their quests given to them by Caesar, to prove him that they are gods and that his conquest against their little Gaelic village will come to an end and he would hand over Rome to them if they succeed but if they fail they will join the empire.

    Love the list. I would say all of Rainbox Six Vegas 1 and 2 is worthy of being called "realistic". I especially feel like the "construction yard" mission was so tense with two enemy snipers. On max difficulty that was some tactical gaming.

    Any chance you could change the splash screens denoting the number? The white background is blinding! Maybe make the background dark grey/blue and make the number pale grey? Just a suggestion. Don't enjoy being essentially flashbanged every couple of minutes haha

    I’m pretty sure that bank mission in The Witcher 3 is a nod to the 8th task in the film ‘Asterix and The Twelve Tasks’. They are set the task of finding permit A 38 in “the place that sends you mad”. A really fun film if you ever get the chance to watch it.

    The witcher 3 mission is a nod to Les 12 travaux d'Asterix. A french film. In this film, in order to complète his task, Astérix must aquire permit A38. But to get it you must have permit B35 and to get that you must have permit X03 etc etc etc. It's a nice little node
