  • How to remove shingles to do a roof repair. It doesn't matter if you have 3 tab shingles or the newer dimensional shingles, also called architectural shingles. The repair process is basically the same. Whether your shingles are damage from wind hail or any other damage, start with removing the damaged shingles with a flat bar. Make sure to remove any nails that are sticking up. Then reinstall the new shingles. Make sure any of the compromised seal strips get a small dab of sealer, otherwise they could blow out again.
    I used the AJC mag hatchet to do this repair. I use it for mast all repair work I do!
    It is definitely worth the cost! It will speed up your repair and save your fingers from being smashed! It will also help from smashing the last shingle that needs nailed, saving you from damaging more shingles.

    Thanks for the vids. I hate roofing and I seem to see more crappy previous roofing work than any other trade for some reason. You do nice work. Maybe get into doing sidewall work to carry you through the winter.

  • @secretagentrandybeans4873

    Good work. Those 3 tab shingles though you should nail right below the tar Strip. Those 3 tabs with the solid tar Strip when they seal, water can get stuck behind the tar Strip and ride it across and start getting to the nails and possibly cause a leak over time.

    Great work, I'm looking at DIYing some repairs this weekend and yours are among the best videos on the topic. I'd be curious if you'd do a video on roof safety and steep roofs, as well as non-roof topics you work in, eg framing or siding.

    How do you work with a shingle repair on a newly installed roof where the seals are bonded really tight. It seems like those are almost impossible to repair because you cannot lift the shingles above the damaged ones to pull the nails out to make the repair.

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  Před 3 lety

      you have to be extremely careful splitting that top row. Even if it means pulling the seal strip from the headlap. It will lift the granules with it. When your repair is done, seal them down. Word of caution, you need to make sure you don't actually slice the shingle clean through. Paying close attention to any key ways. It is a pain in the ass for sure, but can be done.

      @@GrandRoofingInc I was hoping you had some magical method that made it easy! Darn. Do you typically charge more for these kinds of repairs?

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  Před 3 lety +1

      Definitely! Whenever you're looking to give an estimate on a repair, typically you're up there. So I will just try gently with my fingers to get an idea how sealed they are. If they are sealed extremely tight you can expect it to go slower or possibly run into trouble.

    When a hand hammered nail makes a a little indentation in the shingle pulling the material down - is this the correct depth of the nail or is it a slightly overdriven nail?

  • @linwoodwebb4259
    @linwoodwebb4259 Před 2 lety +1

    I thought your supposed to nail under the tar line 5 inches from the bottom and not above the tar strip

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  Před 2 lety

      With asphalt shingles you want your nails to be above the exposure line. There is a slight margin above or below that you can safely put them. You don't want them too low to be exposed from the shingle above. You also don't want them too high. With 3 tab you have to be cautious on how far left and right you place them from the keyway. With that said it's not so much where the nail is in relation to the tar. You do however want them to be close to the tar so it's fastening that section of shingle down when the shingle above seals to the tar it's not going to give.. I have had people tell me in the years past I was doing it wrong and that the tar strip is to seal the nail. That is completely incorrect. The seal strip is to hold the shingle above down.

  • @stephenhawkingMLG
    @stephenhawkingMLG Před 11 měsíci

    This is extremely wrong. You do NOT cut shingles in the center sections of a slope, improper and illegal in most places! If a tab is damaged or missing, you remove the entire shingle and replace it, not cut out the bad part and leave the good like you did. You’ve now changed the offset of the shingles and made them different from the rest of the roof, increasing the number of potential entry points for water and increasing the likelihood of the shingles being damaged by wind again. Cuts should only be made on the edges, valleys, hips, and ridges.
