- An explanation of asthma treatment: controller (maintenance) inhalers versus reliever inhalers and if these can be combined in a single device.
The most common reliever is Ventolin (salbutamol)
Symbicort and Foster (or Fostair) can also be used as part of a SMART strategy for treatment (single maintenance and reliever therapy). Here, you would use the same maintenance inhaler as a reliever as well during a mild asthma attack.
This can be especially helpful during asthma flareups (exacerbations) in the context of viral infections, exposure to allergens as a boost of anti-inflammatory therapy is provided by the extra puffs, which may stop the flare-up.
However, Ventolin is still useful during bad attacks (especially if you need many puffs to stop it). A spacer can also be used with it as needed during the attack (when using the regular inhaler may be difficult due to breathlessness).
