@@caseysmith544 Yeah, Pat Stevens did a really good job. Personally, I think that she, Mindy and Nicole were the best Velmas. Though B.J. Ward and Kate MIcucci did a reasonable job... Marla on the other hand, forget it! Her Velma sounds like she's reading out the script, the same way a person reads the newspaper .
P.S. Call it a wish, but I would lvoe for one day Linda to take the on the role of voicing Velma (I mean, Matthew was Shaggy in the first live-action movies, and is currently the official voice of Shaggy. So, why not give Linda the job? She's no stranger to voice acting... after all, she already voiced Marxy "Hot Dog Water" Fleach in Mystery Incorporated, which to be fair, the character is basically an alternate version of Velma).

I would argue that Velma does have a distinctive voice. It’s almost always higher and slightly squeaky. Linda Cardellini was definitely making her voice more squeaky for the role. Not as distinctive as shaggy, but still distinctive. One thing I noticed about Nicole Jaffes original Velma that no one attempted to imitate is that she speaks with a lisp and her S’s are very distinct. That could’ve become almost as iconic as “jinkies” if other actors had tried to continue the lisp

The best explanations I can come up with is that some point, it was likely a Daphnie line before it was given to Velma, the line was just never re-recorded and the mistake was never caught, or the Japanese animation crew just accidentally mistook the two voices and it was never fixed.

When you cross from Nicole Jaffe to Pat Stevens, they seem so similar, but the two carry a totally different vibe, and to me, Velma was never the same again (except for the two 2003 movies). The other voices drifted further from the original, lacking the charm, though Mindy Cohn was an attempt to come back in the right direction. The only other person who seemed to cover the original Jaffe feel, was Kellie Martin, who ironically did Daphne in the Pup Named Scooby series. But then that Daphne was actually more like Velma, like in always being the one to say "there's no such things as ghosts!"

Cohn’s performance is the one I’m most used to and I think she also tends to give the most emotional performances whenever applicable, which gives her a slight edge over the others. That being said, Jaffe, Stevens, Ward, and Rodriguez all fit the intellectual role pretty well too. Rodriguez deserves credit for actually taking the role and managing to convey the right kind of performance despite her voice being different than most interpretations (unlike Zac Efron as Fred, where he’s basically just being Zac Efron and not much else).
Kate Micucci’s a great comic actress, but her voice tends to work better with more eccentric characters like Webby Vanderquack from DuckTales. She definitely gives a lot of energy to the character, but it just seems a bit too extreme for such an already established personality. Lange, D’Abruzzo and Frumkin are the weakest here. All voices are pretty generic, although D’Abruzzo and Lange at least sound like they’re trying to give good performances, plus they’re also meant to be playing younger incarnations of the character. Frumkin doesn’t seem to show any signs of an attempt at a good performance.

Well, I grew up with the first two voice actors, but I did notice a slight change in Nicole Jaffe's voice from SDWAY? and TNSDM, getting a bit higher pitched. And, yes, my most fave would have been Jaffe, if she stayed consistent. It turns out, I think Velma's voice worked better with the deeper pitch and nasal sound, along with the slight accent (New York, maybe). Pat Stevens would have been the one in my formative years, and her voice fits most of that description. But to be fully honest, I think the Mindy Cohn, Kate Micucci, Linda Cardellini all had the best, similar, and consistent (in my mind) Velma voice.
And I do have to say, even when the others didn't match voices, the only two that didn't fit were B.J. Ward, who sounded like she was doing a mocking version in parodies, Sarah Gilman, who while was doing a good job acting, was just doing the "I'm in a young adult/kids film... my career is starting and I'll get to act someday".
I don't count Gina Rodriguez, mainly because that sounds like the casting director didn't even try for a type. They just wanted a VO actress and she was next up on the list.

One of my most prominent memories of the Scooby-Doo franchise is of Velma's different voice in some episodes, a somewhat deeper voice, quite distinct from her usual higher-pitched nasally tone. As the mind has a tendency to create new memories based upon memory fragments, I assumed Velma had a voice actress change during the original 'Where are You!' incarnation. From watching this video it is clear that the voice I remember from all those years ago is of Marla Frumpkin and came about much later than I had thought, late 1970s-early 1980s.
Of the other voice actresses, the original, Nicole Jaffe, is easily the best. Even in Nicole's brief return to the role in the 2000s, one can recognise her unique portrayal. The 'interim' voice actress Pat Stevens did a good job with maintaining the style of Velma's original voice but doesn't quite have the edge Nicole Jaffe brought to the role.

If you look up the puppeteer cast list, they're all Sesame Street regulars. The guy who performs Shaggy's puppet is the guy who currently plays Grover. I really wish there was an undubbed scratch track with the original puppeteers' voices, provided they overdubbed them and they weren't performing to a pre-recorded track.

For the live action roles, I think Linda Cardellini is my personal fave and for the VA, definitely Mindy Cohn. Both just capture that specific oomph to the Velma voice that makes it feel somewhat unique that I feel was started with the original performance from 1969.
Don't get it twisted tho, I love what most of the actors bring to the role like the slight raspiness in Kiyoko's voice, the more nasally voice of Micucci and even Gina Rodriguez who sounds a bit like an older Velma. It's just that the ones I stated in the previous paragraph capture the spirit the most from the original show
But still, I thought you were pranking me that most of the voices were just the VAs using their natural voice and man, it blew my mind hearing Velma voices without that distinct oomph.
