Video Introduction:
Videocon Industries Limited is an Indian multinational conglomerate, headquartered in Mumbai. The group had 17 manufacturing sites in India and plants in Mainland China, Poland, Italy and Mexico. It was the third-largest picture tube manufacturer in the world valued at US$5.5 billion.
In 1985, Aurangabad based Nandlal Madhavlal Dhoot founded and incorporated Videocon International with a goal of manufacturing 1 lakh TV sets per year. "Videocon became the first company to bring colour TVs in India," claims Anirudh Dhoot, the founder's grandson (Venugopal Dhoot's son) and Videocon's current director.
In India, the group sold consumer products like colour televisions, washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, microwave ovens and many other home appliances, through a multi-brand strategy with the largest sales and service network in India.
Since the entry of Korean Chaebols and their rising popularity in the Indian market, Videocon from a stand-point of market leader has seen a slow decline to become a no. 3 player in India. The company continued to do well in the washing machine and refrigerator segment.
In February 2011, Videocon Mobile Phones launched the hitherto unknown concept of 'Zero' paise (1 paisa is the 100th unit of 1 Indian Rupee) per second with bundled SIM cards of Videocon mobile services for 7 of its handset models. In July 2015, Videocon Mobiles launched its own flagship smartphone Videocon Infinium Z51+ in India.
Controversy with ICICI loan fraud
On 4 October 2018, Chanda Kochhar, the ex MD and CEO of ICICI Bank had to step down from her position following allegations of corruption in sanctioning loans to Videocon. Amidst investigations related to Videocon's bad loans, she was forced by the board of ICICI Bank to take indefinite leave. The Central Bureau of Investigation named Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar as beneficiaries of financial fraud. Venugopal Dhoot, the promoter of Videocon had fraudulently transferred part of the loan received from ICICI Bank to the Kochhars' business entreprise after Chanda Kochhar, Sandeep Bakhshi became the full-time Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank. The company stopped trading and entered corporate insolvency proceeding in June 2018. In June 2021, NCLT approved Vedanta Group's bid to take over Videocon, paving way for the new ownership.

We used Videocon washing machine, and it was tough, really tough and heavy duty. Current companies does not provide such quality today. All parts were metal, strong and sturdy. This is the reason for their success, but cost cutting and plastic parts took it down.

This is a really nice case study. There is so much of emotion attached with this company. In my home our first colour TV and refrigerator was from Videocon. Even when I got my first job, I gifted a smart Videocon TV to my mom. After 2 years when there was a need to repair this TV, we got to know that the company is bankrupt. 😟

We used videocon refrigerator for 24years till 2021 without any fault. Then we had an issue and replace it. Wonderful product. Still we are using videocon AC for 8 years still no complaint. Very tough and durable products. My mother still asks for videocon products .

The only reason Videocon failed is due mismanagement of their working capital and term loans while simultaneously siphoning off the bank money into other businesses and personal offshore accounts. Chandra Kochhar used her top position in ICICI bank as MD & CEO to grant the insane amount of loans to the Company through other banks, without tallying the books, even when the financials of the Company was pointing towards NPA while Venugopal Dhoot used his political influence to siphon off the money in off-shore accounts. This is not a case study of diversification of business portfolio but a scam created by top Company and Government officials. Top RBI officials were also involved in this scam.

Videocon was not the first producer of color TV in India. Before that ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India) made the first color TV in 1979. Then with collaboration with Sony, Indian company named Orson Electronics used to make color TVs, since 1982. Videocon, BPL etc. came much after that.

Lesson to learn : Don't focus on too many things, if we do one thing in great way, its enough. Their quality was not good btw. I heard their phones used to explode. Blah blah. One fine product was D2H, apart from that they tried many things n failed. They didn't focus on few things but tried to focus on many things. They should have expanded slowly. They failed themselves.
