- Unilateral opaque hemithorax , or whiteout lung is common in Xray. In the Emergency room , ICU and wards, it may be encountered. There are various causes of unilateral white-out lungs, including pleural effusions, lung collapse, consolidation and mass in the X-ray. The causes of unilateral white out lung can be differentiated by following. some pattern identification in the Chest xray. The patterns may be shifting of trachea, mediastinum and so on .
