Hendrix Doublestops on "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down": R&B Guitar Lesson

  • This is one of my all-time favorite songs. Levon Helm is not only one of the greatest drummers ever, but also one of the most unique and emotive singers, in my opinion. Plus, Robbie Robertson wrote the heck outta this one. I thought it'd be a fun challenge to see if I could arrange the melody in fifth position, using Hendrix pentatonic fills to fatten things up. The result is quite satisfying!

      oooh perfect timing! Congrats on finishing your projects!
      I've always wanted to build my own amps, but sadly, electric circuits go beyond my intelligence level.
      To me the perfect amp would be a Tweed Deluxe with 6L6s and bigger output transformer. Or maybe a Blackface Deluxe with only one channel. Or a half powered JTM45. I love amps!

      I went a bit smaller than that. A couple of years ago I built a nice tweedy version of a vibro champ. Now I just finished a brown Princeton 6G2. The guitar is a home made LP special with Lollar P-90’s...my first amp was a Silvertone in 1968, I was 17...

      Thanks - yeah it’s such a great song. Maybe because Robbie’s Canadian, and Levon is from Arkansas, they’re some magic to the pathos of it.
      These days, I tend to avoid creating fingerstyle arrangements- I feel like I can put more mojo into approaching things from other angles. Plus, it makes them easier to play!

  • @Wabi-sabi8551
    @Wabi-sabi8551 Před 6 lety +2

    I bought a 1988 exrad '67/'68RI MIJ Strat after reading how Leo Fender was blown away by the "astonishing" quality of the MIJ RI's. The 80's MIJ reissues are freaking awesome. I ended up buying another 1988 MIJ '67/'68RI Strat, a 1982 JV MIJ '62 RI and a 1986 MIJ Rosewood Tele RI as well. The Fender custom shop guitars I've owned and played aren't even up to par with the higher end 80's era MIJ RI's. There was a time I would have called myself a blasphemer for saying this, but IMO they play better than and I prefer them over, their vintage US counterparts(and I've owned several dozen over the years). Leo himself said "we never made em that nice". The 80's era MIJ RI's have some serious samurai warrior mojo. Honestly, anybody considering a pricey Fender custom shop guitar should seriously check out some 80's era MIJ guitars first. You could buy vintage electronics for it, and save money. Not to mention, you wouldn't have to pay out the rear end for an over priced custom shop Fender. Considering the steep cost of the higher priced custom shop guitars, you'd be better off setting up an 80's MIJ RI with vintage electronics; or simply spending a bit more for a vintage Fender.

      Patreon is cool because you can make premium videos who are available only for Patrons that support you with a higher amount etc... I personally would prefer exclusive content with in-depth videos, maybe even addressing topics which patrons themselves can choose via polls or something. It would just be awesome to see this channel grow yknow. Maybe those premium lessons you do can be put on there for higher paying patrons. Anyway just an idea, i'm not a paid advertiser for Patreon if that's what youre thinking :D. Can't wait for the next vid! Keep it up!

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  Před 5 lety

      Thanks so much AL! There’s something very unique about the neck pick up on that tele, it’s just an American vintage re-issue but it is strangely bright. It’s weird, when I roll the volume down it actually gets brighter as opposed to darker.

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  Před 5 lety

      Amps settings wise, I keep the bass all the way off and then roll it on slowly until I can just feel it and then treble I start at the middle and either bring it up or down depending on the guitar and pickup combo.
