i absolutely love this video, it’s not an interview that the same questions that have been asked a thousand times are asked again, but simply a conversation between two incredibly talented men.
Timothée and Armie shine, but the script favors Timmy. Timothée is absolutely supreme in the very final scene, when he is on the phone with Armie, hardly says a word, but his face subtly displays the pain he is experiencing and undoubtedly the memory of what his father told him. It was a masterful, phenomenal feat of acting. Félicitations, Timothée. Your love of acting is obvious. May it continue to bring you joy and understanding of life and what you are all about. I think you have a Hamlet in you, in a few years, not too many: a young Hamlet is rare, and I'd love to see one still in his twenties. I saw Ian McKellen do it in London when he was 31..... little did I know then, nor probably did he..... what a famous actor he would turn out to be. It was beautiful. Try to do it while you are in your twenties. Bring a thoughtful young man's sensitivity to it. I think you can handle the poetry beautifully. Hamlet was young.

The fact that the movie itself has no external force stopping Elio and Oliver's love gives us and them nothing to blame, which makes it more heartbreaking.
At least two external forces are Oliver's conservative Jewish father and the fact that in 1983, gay couples were hardly the norm. Even in more tolerant Italy, Oliver and Elio are not "in your face" with their relationship when they are in public, and the inclusion of the gay couple "Sonny and Cher" provides a touch of comic relief: The Professor says to Elio something like, "Do you laugh at them because they are gay, or because they are ridiculous?" Oliver is the one who has to face the practicalities of conservative parents as well as the restrictive nature of a university professorship. When torn between the idyllic love born of a transient Italian summer and a less carefree professional life in puritanical USA, he makes the more "acceptable" choice, which is the one demanded by those "external forces."
You have valid points in the context of time and place, in reality. However, when I used the blanket term of no "external force" I am shadowing what the director Luca Guadagnino has stated in multiple interviews; his intent was to create a fragile but seemingly impervious bubble of existence within the real constraints you've brought up, so that we can experience the love of a young pair in a typically inconceivable manner.

I just love this interview so so much, specially when they talk about Mr Perlman's monologue. It's so satisfying to hear them talking as of they were just normal people meeting and hanging out, and I loved watching Timmy being that relaxed (as he is usually so shy).

@@Popcornstar18 According to Luca, the sequel was put on hold because he has too many other projects going now, and if there was to be a sequel, it would only be with Armie and Timothee again when they were older enough for a sequel to make sense. He never said it was because of anything Armie was falsely accused to have done (which has been debunked by now anyway).

Gay actors work all the time playing straight characters. It's a double-edged sword. An actor's orientation should be secondary to a) basic talent level and b) being able to portray the qualities neccessary for the character. If a great straight actor can convince you he's gay in a role that's way better than a bad gay actor playing a gay character simply because he's gay.

I can't locate the video now (it's somewhere here on youtube) but Timothee Chalamet was asked whether he ever had the kind of feelings for a man portrayed in the film, and his answer was that, yes, he had those feelings for Armie during the filming. This makes perfect sense to me, but it doesn't have to mean that either of them actually acted out those feelings, either then or after the filming was completed.

My point is we come into this World (with very few exceptions) with the default sexuality of: human. Everything else is learned, either by mimickery, brainwashing, life experience etc. The sexuality which is traditionally (by that I mean mostly since the Victorian era) regarded as normal, ain't any more normal than other aspects from the cornucopia of human sexuality, it has just been regarded as more functional and socially cohesive.
Sexual norms have been more about control and satisfying the economic needs of the elite, rather than any primary innate preference.
