    One of my favourite Ridley Scott movies. Up there with Alien, Gladiator, Blade Runner and Kingdom of Heaven. It’s refreshing to have a story without any antagonists and everyone works together to solve a problem.

      I actually do believe that everyone would band together (possibly not the Chinese abandoning their own launch to save him, but maybe they would do it for the political kudos). Even the Director, who does occasionally have to be the asshole, isn't acting unreasonably. Nice to have a movie where the only villain is Mother Nature (or is that Father Nature on Mars?)!

    The Martian gets my seal of approval because the movie is re-watchable for me. I am a cynical a-hole so 99,99% of all media I watch is terrible in my eyes. But I have re-watched this movie several times and always come out entertained.
    I believe I found out why watching your review. It reminds me of the movies I saw as a child in the 90s when the US of A was a fantastic country I wanted to live in. A time before the real cruel world showed its face. Where ordinary everyday men could be made heroes on the big screen. Then over the years my youthful dreams has become nightmares of the Empire of Lies.

    I love this movie as the make shift stuff and the real science with one slight misstep with the storm and the lack of mars air pressure but I do love the movie. Much like 2001 a Space odyssey or Appolo 18 the harshness of space is on full show along with the limitations of real science. It's one I really wish was re-released at the cinema.

    Great review but when will somebody at last reveal that few of the so calld "classic"" scifi blockbusters are actually that new? Oops,actually doing it myself right now! Ever heard of No Man Friday, retitled first On Mars in the US by One Rex Gordon. In this book from 1956 !) the same happens to the heroe and he survivs in an actually much more convincing way, even by building a heatpump (How very sustainable!) from pipework taken from his crashed ship. And they also based a movie on that one. It was called Robinson Crusoe On Mars (1964), although that rather deviated from the book. And there are many more such examples. Even 2001 borrowed a lot of studio tricks from much earlier Sowjet sci fi movies. The truth is out there!

    The Rescue and the Sand Storm are the only parts of this movie that is not based on science fact. The rest, minus the growth of potato's (maybe science fact) is almost 100% science fact. The Sand Storm is to harsh for Mars, winds on Mars rarely go above 10 miles per hour even when there is a global sand storm.

    I always have mixed feelings about this movie. On one side it`s a good science (almost, with some fiction) movie, on other it`s a type "hey You! Look how it`s nice to work at NASA!" where it`s looking nice in movie but is far from reality. We want you for our jobs at NASA! come nerds and geeks, come smart ladies. A telescope observer lady has all the time in the world to grab a donut and coffee, sitting in her office job...yea one minute of telescope use is hundreds of dollars and for sure no one would waste work minutes to observe some abandoned base (it would be like having telescope pointed at Apollo 11 landing site 24/7 as maybe something will change) and for sure employee on observer duty would not waste minutes to go and grab a bite when there is a huge list of tasks to do and objects to observe.

    The Martian is my 9'th favorite movie about Mars 🙃
    It would've gotten higher if it didn't have Matt Damon, Ridley Scott, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara,and Jeff Daniels in it.
    I read somewhere that Matt Damon's character was based off of that guy from Mythbusters, that annoying guy that isn't an engineer but pretends to be one...Adam Savage.
    The movie was ok but I wish it was more hard-core sci-fi. But I get it, it's to get casuals to go see it. Young people get a glimpse of how fun science can be - you just wing it and it works out.
    It's hard to put into words how little box office appeal Matt Damon has on me.

    I love Gravity, I love Interstellar, I have no interest in the Martian.
    "It really doesn't make you think." The Martian was, maybe even still is popular?
    I have no snide reply for that ready at hand... I thought I had one somewhere. The Martian is too unrealistic in its realism for me so don't show Apollo 13's table of scraps. "This is what the Apollo 13 crew has." Meanwhile, Matt Damon has whole potatoes?

    • @Sonicspin
      @Sonicspin Před 10 měsíci +2

      I would give it a chance if I were you, if you're a fan of Sci Fi. It's one of the most watchable movies. impossible to turn off once it's started.
      With regards to the realism, I think that's a bad take (especially if you accept Gravity, which has WAY worse realism problems. I love Gravity too btw). As it's set in the future, you can accept some level of sci fi technology; the film only really has one thing that doesnt exist today (radiation shielding, we currently have no way to protect humans from that level of radiation for the journey and on mars.) This isnt even a plot point, its not even mentioned. It's just assumed its a problem thats been solved.
      The only unreleastic part of the movie is the storm at the start, the atmosphere on mars lacks the pressure to tip a rocket over so the inciting incident could never happen. (The author himself has stated this, citing you need one "gimme" to get the movie started. Again, its far more acceptable in my opinion than the ridiculous physics that kill Clooney in Gravity)
      But everything after that was meticulously researched. And the story was originally written in a blog format, so it was being read by a lot of actual NASA scientists who praised it's accuracy and corrected bits that were a bit off as the story went along.
      The potatoes are explained in the movie (and book) as a special one time treat for the crew as they were going to be on Mars during thanksgiving, they thought the effort of bringing one portion of spuds was worth it for crew morale who would be living on mars for months.
      In other words; give it a shot, the movie (and book) are excellent and I think you would enjoy it if you like the other movies you listed

    • @tskmaster3837
      @tskmaster3837 Před 10 měsíci

      @@Sonicspin NASA signed off on as being realistic? The originators of dehydrated food for space travel said water heavy potatoes are ok for space travel over potato flakes? "Because moral" Because author BS.
      The whole thing reeks of "Robinson Crusoe" where the guy strips nude and then fills his pockets with everything the author thinks the guy needs while the ship sinks. The Martian is the type of story where all I can see is the author behind it patting himself on the back, "what a smart boy I am!" You want to impress me? Have the guy GROW EDIBLE MOSS rather than potatoes you contrived.
      If you hate the idea of orbital debris traveling at the speed of orbital objects like in Gravity, stay away from the excellent anime Planetes where its premise is about the people picking up such pieces so that such Gravity accidents don't happen.

      For me, Gravity is enormously enjoyable, because partway through it I decided that it's not a 'real' setting, but is in fact just an analogy for Stone's personal mental health crisis - and the whole thing is happening in her mind, not in space. If you re-watch it as a dream / mental crisis play-out, it's even better.
