I wake up penniless and hungover in a wigwam [Tenner in my pocket #2]

  • This summer I grabbed a sleeping bag, stuffed a tenner in my pocket and walked north from my front door into the countryside for as long as fate deemed necessary.
The adventure continues and ends with this second instalment, but by no means does the excitement fade. Join me as I meet more generous country folk; obtaining more food and water along the way, get charged by multiple livestock and land myself an extraordinary night's sleep..

I was thinking about the Shire watching this and the previous video. you can really see that prof Tolkien got his inspiration from these lands, even 100 years later when I suppose some of it's old beauty has been lost to modern times. It's still great.
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
      Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

I know I'm late to the party and this comment will be lost in the masses, but these 2 episodes were my first exposure to you. I was hooked the second you said you'd always wanted to pick a direction and go, because I'd always had the same dream. Still do. But when you started talking about that one special day, I was reminded of my own day just like that Miles of treck through farmland, rivers, forests, and thorns. One of the most important days of my childhood.
And now at the end of part 2, I was reminded of how humanity is still good hearted at the end of the day. I've always believed so, but it's good to see it in action. The kindness people show, the beauty in sudden friendships, it's a light in a seemingly dark world.
I'm an American, I won't be able to go on a trip like this because it's just highways and cities near me, but that won't stop me from one day traveling someone it is possible, and having a go at it.

Such an enjoyable watch Tom. It reminds me of how lucky we are in Scotland with our 'Right to Roam' legislation. We would not have to be sneaking about, avoiding farmers and 'Private land' signs. As long as we are responsible and respect others, we are generally allowed to walk where we want.
I walk like this in Spain and France and have always been met with a welcome and generosity.
Last autumn, I met a long distance walker in Scotland. He came back to my house, and despite my poor French, had a meal, a shower and bed to sleep in. I may never meet Guillaume again but it's sometimes time to 'pass it on'. Well done to Adam, showing exactly this attitude.

Another great adventure Tom, thanks. This mini series highlighted 2 things for me - 1. The public rights of way in this country are largely a joke to landowners (overgrown, grazed by crazed sheep and cows, blocked by electric fences, or just plain moved on a whim) and we need to do more to protect, and keep them (and keep them clear too!). 2. It's a stupidly small world - Adam, as others have pointed out, is friend of another CZcamsr but I'm pretty sure he's also a guy i kinda know through working in Manchester!

Easily one of my favourite series of yours so far. The grand nature of your previous adventures are always fun, but this much more raw roots and easily replicable rambling mission oozes charm and as you say yourself, it's a great motivation to younger audiences to explore their own slices of countryside near them. This is a brilliant display of how taking the time to just enjoy being, rather than the constant rush to find entertainment, can be a highly rewarding and unique experience that I would argue holds higher value for the memories of such an experience that you'll carry through life with you.
